Every few weeks, fuel tankers chartered by the Ministry of Defence sail to the Akrotiri coastline from the UK. Each ship carries large amounts of aviation fuel - vital to keeping all jets, transport aircraft and helicopters flying. We were granted special access into how aircraft at RAF Akrotiri are kept fuelled and ready for operations.

So glad I found Forces TV. Really great stuff. When I was USCG Aviation, I tested our fuel for each flight I crewed. These guys are good 👍Thank you 😎

Best posting in the Forces since we let HKG go. Should pump the Sultan in Brunei to expand our RN and RAF presence there and establish bases. The next decades are going to get very interesting in that part of the world.

My Late Father was posted to Cyprus in 1974, From the Royal Engineers whilst serving with the UN at the old Nicosia International Airport , in actual fact his camp was opposite Nicosia Airport . We arrived from BZ at Akrotiri ( which means Cape in Greek ) and left four months later due to the invasion of the Turks. Lovely Island home to Aphrodite, Goddess of Love .Sagapou Kypro.

I don’t know why I’m surprised that the MOD charters fuel tankers i just assumed that the RFA was the one refuelling the over seas military bases given that they already operate tankers ok yes they are replenishment tankers but surely they can act as normal tankers and even if they can’t I would have still thought that they would have at least one standard tanker because even if there isn’t enough work for one tanker for the whole year they could always offer the service to allies just like how their replenishment ships have replenished allied naval vessels

Not mentioned is the microbes that can grow in the tanks. If not controlled, they produce a slime that can gum up the works, both on the ground and in aircraft.

The fuels checked regularly on receipt to the bfi/psd and on issue to the aircraft. The bowsers also have a series of filters the fuel passes through when flushing and issuing
@petesheppard1709
@petesheppard1709 3 жыл бұрын
@@oliam123 Yep! The problem is that bacteria actually grow inside the storage tanks, down at the fuel/water interface, if water is allowed to collect. The slime that they produce clogs up the filters, absent regular inspection and maintenance.

@@adamwoodford7629 In respect of aviation its not. The military are inline a lot with the civilian side of life but due to the unique nature they dictate lot of their own practices. In fact fuel quality in the civilian industry is drawn mainly from UK Defence Standards.
