Just a short B-quality video taken this past weekend while I was out hunting for a loader tractor to add to my fleet. This Ford 335 had been listed on Craigslist for a while and I had messaged the seller about it, but had lost interest when I decided to look for a larger and heavier tractor. By sheer coincidence, I was on my way to check out a bigger Ford 535 tractor in a nearby town, and happened to pass that same 335 on the way up, so I called the seller and planned to come look at it after I was done looking at the 535 (which turned out to be a real piece of junk!)
This 335, on the other hand, turned out to be a nice running and driving tractor with a fresh service, all new tires, and 3-point hitch/PTO, but like most of the industrial Fords that used the earlier curved front axle, the tie rod ends were all worn out and needed replaced. I also feel that it should have come with rear weights for the asking price which was firm. It also did not have a shuttle-shift transmission or foot throttle, which I would prefer for what I will be using the tractor for, so those were a deal breaker for me. The search continues...

Any time I see an old loader tractor with a stick shift; I’m instantly reminded of the issues my dad had with doing loader work with his JD 4300 SyncReverser. Damn thing would stall out every time you went into a pile of dirt, even with the transmission in 4-C
@MichaelTJD60

The standard gear transmissions (like the one in this tractor) are awful for doing loader work because nobody wants to keep clutching to change directions, BUT they have the advantage of being much simpler and less costly to repair. The power-reverser (shuttle shift) transmissions which are used on a lot of the industrial tractors and backhoes use a torque converter which can cause a ton of headaches when it fails, and will be expensive to repair. The 535 I looked at before this 335 had a bad torque converter and the only way to change gears was to shut the engine off and then make the shift while cranking it over...IF you could get the shuttle to engage in forward or reverse.

I have about that same tractor, a 3400. I do get tired of the stick but keep in mind how much work it will do for the price of the machine. Even with 1k of wheel weights and 1k on the three point it will spin out long before any engine stalling when pushing into a dirt pile.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 2 жыл бұрын
@@MikefromMissouri Does your 3400 have the "pseudo" shuttle shift 4-speed transmission where there is a matching reverse gear directly below each forward gear (so when you want to reverse you just pull the shifter down into reverse and have the exact same speed)?
@MikefromMissouri
@MikefromMissouri 2 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelTJD60 It does not. Just a high and low on one stick and the forward and reverse gear on the other.

@@MikefromMissouri Have you had any issues with the tie rod ends and steering joints wearing out or breaking? I've heard it's a common problem on these earlier Ford industrials. The later models went to a welded front axle with hydrostatic steering so there was no mechanical linkage. Seems like every 335/3400/4400 I look at has worn out steering.

Sounds like it's running great! Now honestly, I would be more surprised if the injector pump didn't leak. Definitely would be a fantastic tractor to have.

I would agree, it's a nice size for what I'm looking to do. That 3-cylinder diesel will run all day long. It seems like every one of these engines leak from the injection pump.

I have a John Deere 316 and I started it this spring and it is running wide open at crazy rpm’s any idea what the problem is? I was thinking governor but I have no idea
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 2 жыл бұрын
Is your linkage all hooked up? Something could have come loose and if the governor arm has no linkage to control it, then it will try to take off...is it a 316 Kohler or 316 Onan?

I have one of these with a cab that i got from a guy who bought it from the school he worked at. Great machine definitely needs weights and chains if you do anything in the winter. These tractors i believe have a two stage clutch system. one for movement and one for hydraulics and depending how far you press the pedal it stops the tractor. However the clutch in my tractor was frozen when i got it and splitting these isn’t fun with a cab and we never freed up the PTO clutch so the PTO will not spin more than 10rpm ish
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I don't think I've ever seen a 335 with a cab but plenty of 340's/445's/545's with them. You are right about the two-stage clutch. Having the cab installed definitely doesn't make splitting the tractor any easier. I ended up buying a 340A which is basically a 335 engine and loader on a heavier 445 chassis and rear end.

It will be used for moving my JD 60 project carcass in and out of my shop since the shop floor is not level enough for splitting stands or an engine hoist, and the driveway is gravel.

@@SingleBottomBoys Specifically a 340A/B, 345 series, 445 series, 515/535/545 series, or an older 4500. Needs to have the heavier welded square front axle instead of the cast iron one that this tractor has. Also would prefer the shuttle-shift/torque converter transmission. This tractor didn't have that either.
