The fact that she says this as a gem who came out "wrong" in being naturally shorter than average, also adds to this. All that definitely comes back with the Jasper stuff. Man this show had good writing early on...

One of the most striking episodes in the series. I adore how the crew manage to marry the idea of giving exposition about the kindergarten with Amethyst's emotional reaction to Pearl's explanation. It makes the idea of the gems as alien invaders have so much more weight. The kintergarten has this chilling sense of death to it, and Steven wondering about all of the other holes really makes you realise just how MASSIVE Homeworld's operations must be. There are entire *planets* that look just like Amethyst's home. Amethyst's rant about how the Crystal Gems were preventing "parasites like ME!" has stuck in my mind for years. Michaela Dietz's performance here is superb, she embodies her rage, sadness and feeling of inferiority so well. Her learning that she's not bad purely because she came from a bad environment is such a good message for kids. Amethyst's arc is one of my favourite in the series and I'm so glad you're covering it. Great video!

I've seen Amethyst's origin explained as an allegory for a child of an affair/r*pe which is an interesting perspective. I really loved this episode when it came out, the ending fight and make-up between Pearl and Amethyst really made the show feel like it was gonna be something special. It was tackling stuff I never seen other cartoons even attempt.

Rebecca Sugar was recently interviewed about the 10th Anniversary of Steven Universe. She said that if there are enough people interested, Steven Universe can get a revival series in the near future!

"I never asked to be this way. I never asked to be made!" is one of the most impactful -- not to mention completely heart wrenching -- quotes in the entire series. When I think about Steven Universe, I think about those tears running down Amethyst's face.

What hurts the most is that we'll never fully understand amethyst. "I NEVER ASKED TO BE MADE!" Is a line that hit me like a truck when I watched this show. Gems are superior to humans in many ways, but growing is where they fall short. Sure, they get experience and knowledge, but never quite grasp the variant of this ability that a human has. To be able to grow in near limitless categories. Amethyst was straight up *born* inferior to many others. And to make it worse, she was "picked up" by rose, as if she is a strat animak rather than an individual. When she yells her frustration for being made into the world, she isn't saying she doesn't want to keep going because it's too hard. Amethyst, for a long time, wished she was never made into a form that is inferior than the rest. It took me YEARS to understand why my younger self was sobbing durning the episode. I knew something was off, something unbelievably sad, and soul crushing. And years later, I fully comprehend it. Which makes me grateful that our beloved big sis figuer is happy with herself.

Other than Mirror/Ocean Gem this is probably one of the most impactful episodes in the entire series. Covering some really heavy topics in a very nuanced way.

I'm really happy you discussed this episode. Out of all the crystal gyms. I feel like Lapis and Amethyst get the least amount of spotlight... Oh boy! they preview for your next video is exciting. The Cooler is def one of the most decisive episodes in Adventure Time imo. If not, top 3 at the very most. I can't wait to see your analysis of it, or atleast what I'd feel would be a fair critical look at how nuanced/grey PB's character is. There's too many videos out there painting her as some kind of evil creature.

So anyway in conclusion I love amethyst

Amethyst is one of my fav gems from how much I relate to her biggest struggles. She feels inferior, both in that she came from an awful event and that she came out "wrong" even then. Self-hate and insecurity is something I struggle alot with, so I really liked seeing her slowly learn to accept and love who she is and the family she has.
