Rich, I have followed your work since your first kit offering. We all model with the same wood, paint and plaster. But some of us produce fantastic models. Your modules just have that something special to them. Magic almost. Thank you for sharing.

THANKS Darryl !! You do some Beautiful models yourself!!!!! I received your tip on the brass wire system for LED's inside the Payless Mill, I will see if I can design some type of system that will replace the current mess. Thanks again!! Rich

Question about the sand soil that you use. What material and technique do you use? My attempt always seem to come out too dark. I have tried to use light colored soil from the back yard and I have also tried to use shifted sand. A video on how you apply soil and scenery would be helpful or just give me a few pointers on what material you use and how you glue it down. Thanks Bill.

The ground soil on the Payless all came from the same area. Being as I was planning a mining railroad in the California Mother Lode area I thought it best to get my dirt from that area!! At the time I brought home a bucket full and it has lasted for all 7 modules. There are many different methods and materials that people use but I just used the old Elmers white glue method. I would brush on a 50/50 mix and then just sprinkle the dirt onto the wet scenery. When that first application was dry I would go back over everything with another 50/50 mix but would apply the glue with an eye dropper this time as not to get glue on any of my rock work. Make sure to add a wetting agent to your mix!!

Going to start building the Kansas River and Southern on a 4x8 table soon. Do you have advice for building town and industrial scenes? I intend to show a deep shaft coal mine, a feed mill/ store, a lumberyard/ hardware store, a stock pen, a spur that suggests an off table connection. I have to run a minimum mainline radius of 18 inches due to two Bachmann 2-6-0 Moguls as my motive power. I noticed that your mining town has mostly small footprint buildings. I'm not much of a scratch building, but I do good with kits.
@richwhite4331
@richwhite4331 Жыл бұрын
My only suggestion would be to make mock-ups of each of your buildings first, and lay them out on your table to see if they fit into your overall scene. Being as my modules are only 18" wide it was crucial that I didn't try to jam in to many structures which I think happens way too much on smaller layouts. Place your mock-ups then just spent a couple of days just looking at your scene from all different angles. Does it look realistic? It always easier to make your structure adjustments with mock-ups, than finding out you have purchased and built too many kits to fit in your overall scene.

@@richwhite4331 thanks, I made an adjustment in the plan already. I reevaluated my space and read up on portability and redesigned a line using a 4x6 table and reduced the number of industries down to the coal mine and a lumber yard/ hardware supplier. I am looking at a small station and I have two branch line water towers I am going to use one on the 4x6. It will be a simple oval for now with a passing track and a switch back to access the mine and the lumberyard. The primary locomotives are going to be my Davenport, my Class B 20 Climax and a Trench Locomotive. The era will be some time from the late 1930s to the late 1940s/ early 1950s. The KR&S decided to maintain their existing roster rather than switch to newer diesels so it will have some steam infrastructure. I am going to make mockups of the few buildings the town of Underwood will have. I will have to make a cardstock and paper mockup of the mine's enclosed mine head/ shaft house/ hoist house that is going to be based on a mine structure from the history page of the Osage County, KS' website. That building kind of resembles the basing of a small factory/ warehouse and a hoist house together. I am likely going to make mine from scratch rather than get a kit.

@@richwhite4331 I never tried that yet. I have Atlas snap track and Custom LIne track. But for the 4x6 I have some Bachmann E-Z Track.

If You won't mind i hawe another beginners question, that white material You are using under the roads and railtarcks and the rocks in the bridge fondation, wha tis that called? Do You think i can paint Hydrocal ower regular plastermolds?
@richwhite4331
@richwhite4331 2 жыл бұрын
Beginners Questions are ALWAYS Welcome!! All of the white material is White Hydrocal by US Gypsum. If you want to cover plaster mold with Hydrocal I would try to brush on some in just a small section and see if it holds to the Plaster mold. Try a 50/50 mix of Hydrocal & Water and let it dry completely. If the Hydrocal holds to the Plaster mold add another couple of coats, same mix ratio and see if they hold. Let me know how that works. Thanks, Rich White
