With a title like Once aJolly Swagman this Aussie lass had to watch it. Then as i watched, i saw a travelling case with my dads name on it! "R. Fox: Rail to Paris." This is a crazy coincidence as i was talking about my dad to someone the other day...he left England for Australia in 1948 and in the 1950s he joined the Australian Commonwealth Railways! I t was great to see that railway tag, brought back lots of memories...this was his era. Slightly younger than Bogarde.

Hooragh, that ending was superb!! Dirk Bogarde was very young here, but he had that curt, boyish look that made beautiful Women swoon. Rest in Peace Great Actor, and for anyone interested, I would recommend a classic called "Darling" he is at his best and the cast is classy. Well done for sharing thank you

Filmed at New Cross Stadium, London, look at that huge crowd ! This is social comment as much as entertainment. Speedway was really big after WW11 with the UK on its uppers, and an appetite for low cost evenings out, the public were desperate to put the war behind them

Caution - read this comment AFTER the movie, it kinda has a spoiler.... Cool film thanks. Reminds me of the traveling musician days. Guys would quit and go home to the dramatic wife or girlfriend. I told my neighbor about this once - he was a retired army general - and he sternly said, "We lost more good men to cry baby wives than the enemy."

Great movie about not doing the right thing. Dirk makes bad selfish decisions and doesn't look after his wife like he should. People should watch this movie and understand that it's not about how much money you make, it's about loving your wife and family. Letting them know you care about them, that they're the most important thing in your life. Excellent cast and excellent story. Highly recommend.

Born in Fulham, I used to support the DONS but when Aub Lawson came and raced at Wimbledon nearly everybody cheered him on, such was the popularity of this great Australian rider. He rode for the HAMMERS from 1947-1951 so he would ride against the DONS very regularly. After he returned from Australia he rode with the NORWICH STARS and he still was our favourite rider to watch when they came to Wimbledon. He had a riding style that was flamboyant, stylish, daring, and entertaining to watch. It was Australians who introduced the steel toecap, the "bullhorn" handle-bars which replaced the traditional straight type, and a few other innovations. 'nuf sed.

Bill is wearing a speedway badge, probably of his favourite team. "Swagman" was filmed at New Cross, but since they used a different name for it in the film, it probably isn't a New Cross badge.

Didn’t like the film at all, as Bogarde’s character fancied himself a bit too much, what’s a speedway star when he’s at home?. Shall always remember my late father taking me to see speedway racing at Raleigh Weir in Essex in the 1960’s. I had no interest in the sport, my late mother didn’t like my father taking me to see the sport.
