Beautiful...absolutely beautiful. Although I'm a woman I honestly feel this song and arrangement suits male voices. This is one of the clearest and most powerful versions I have heard, and I understood the words perfectly, which is not the case in a large choir. Thank you for posting it.

Even though I may not be a Christian, I still can get some wisdom and comfort from this song. I understand it as a hymn towards wisdom and making choices that impact the self and others positively. That to shine with the brightest light in the most enveloping darkness makes life's struggle worth a damn. It makes life worth something.

It was originally written in 1845 about America deciding whether to go to war with Mexico and admit more slave states into the Union.

Prefer it with a mixed group and a little faster but I really like this arrangement. I wish you'd done all the verses!

Women don't have this choice? Or women see things in a more nuanced manner, with more than one choice ahead?

No, in this case "𝐦𝐚𝐧" means both 𝐦𝐞𝐧 and wo-𝐦𝐞𝐧 who are all part of 𝐦𝐚𝐧kind or the species of man. It makes sense to refer to the hu-𝐦𝐚𝐧 species as "𝐦𝐚𝐧" or "𝐦𝐚𝐧kind" since both 𝐦𝐚𝐧 and wo𝐦𝐚𝐧 both have the word "𝐦𝐚𝐧" in it, and that's how it's been referred to for generations, more commonly during the time when this song was written. Much respect to both women and men though, we're all children of God : )
