Once we are financially secure, money does not bring happiness.

If you know who Dan Bilzerian is and what he’s known for, then you’d understand exactly how shocking his statement is. As one of the most controversial people on the internet, Dan Bilzerian can be likened to a modern Hugh Hefner.
His lifestyle - which one could argue represents the polar opposite of the way of Jesus - involves throwing lavish parties, sleeping with tons of women, driving fast cars and coasting on yachts.
He’s worth $350 million dollars and broadcasts all of his escapades to his 33 million Instagram followers. Yet in this candid interview on Steve-O’s Wild Ride podcast, he makes the admission that the very lifestyle he advertises does not bring him happiness.
So why do we continue to pursue money as if it’ll bring happiness? Deep down, many of us believe that money will fix all our problems.
It comes down to this: financial problems can be a severe source of stress, especially for those that are just getting by. So in this sense, it is true that money does bring about a sense of security.
But since many of us have never reached a fraction of Bilzerian’s wealth - or ever been in a place of excess - we do not realize that once our basic needs are met, money won’t do anything for us.
In fact, a 2010 Princeton study found that there is a numerical limit to which money brings happiness - $75,000/year to be exact. Given inflation over the last 13 years and the geographical location that different people live in, this number is relative.
In San Francisco, for example, it might be much higher, because the cost-of-living is higher. Nonetheless, the point remains the same. Once we are financially secure, money does not bring happiness.
While Bilzerian’s realizations may be shocking because of who he is, they are not new. Thousands of years ago, Jesus warned against the dangers of the love of money.
Money is not bad - it should neither be demonized or glorified. It’s a means, not an end. But if our primary pursuit in life is about attaining wealth and pleasure, then we will live chronically dissatisfied.
We’ll never stop thirsting for more, and we’ll keep looking to something that will never be capable of quenching that thirst.

I would even argue that there are actually many neurological studies which support the fact that money earned through luck and not personal effort will trigger a considerably stronger emotional response due to the extremely high reward to effort ratio. Meaning that earning money diligently through sheer effort should be much less pleasurable than actually winning it overnight, from a neurological standpoint.

Not entirely true. Our hunter gatherer ancestors were incredibly happy and had no concept of money at all. For them happiness was derived from their tribe and the close connections that went along with it. Once their basic needs of food and safety were met, happiness comes naturally from being around others who care about each other. We lost a lot of this as the population of this planet exploded, money became the gold standard for success, and our interpersonal connections suffered.

@@mikeshafer Whoever says that money isnt on number 2 spot in therms of importance in life(1 is health), has never been in a tough financial situation. You weren't insanely rich but you had basic stuff on default, food, shelter, paid bills, paid clothes, paid college, paid allowance etc. The problem with modern capitalism is that it created the world where half of the planet is struggling with basic needs, they don't work for luxuries, they work and earn money to survive. I grew up in Serbia where me and my sister barely had those basics needs, our parents would skip dinners for example, or they would buy things like used clothes. I had to start working at 15 and ofcourse we couldn't even think about affording a college, so im working ever since. It was 24/7 struggle with acquiring money, we didn't even think about having any luxuries. I'm not complaining tho, i'm actually glad i'm not one of those spoiled people, currently i am doing well for myself and have good salary but i always respect money because of what i've been through, i'm just giving you the other side of the story. And im positive that there is mllions people in other cities or countries that had it 10 times harder than me. When they get a woman they are happy… but after ten years of being with her they start to look miserable again 😂 it’s a thing. People enjoy the journey, not the destination.

At first, I was living a high life. After some time, it stopped being so fun. At some point, I felt a crash and became borderline depressed and empty. Luckily, I was able to turn my life around and live a more balanced life now, have a partner, and couldn't be happier. The things that bring true happiness cost little to no money. Being content is true freedom, not money. If you have your daily needs being met with your pay check, being a multimillionaire won’t change that because that doesn’t mean a person will be content. They may want more and more and more. IMO, knowing the Creator in Christ and having peace with Him and being content with His provision is all I need. I have worked at jobs making a good amount of money and I did get that initial “high,” but it all because mundane and it doesn’t make you more happy or more content- it may not give you either or after time.

If all 5 of your senses can only be observed by your consciousness, and your consciousness is what produces emotions in relation to the senses, that must mean we have it within us, with the money, or without the money. If you're using your imagination for anything negative, I ask why? As valid and rational as it may seem to you, is it loving to yourself? We have "12-60 thousand thoughts per day" - from a quick Google search. Are you letting any of these thoughts slip by unnoticed? love you all.

problem is with inflation and job stability a fiction you honestly need like several million$ in savings to be financially secure. You could get huge medical bills or unemployed from white collar job at 50 and never get a job again. So yeah we cant overestimate the importance of $$$

Only Jesus can fill that void he's talking about. I was an atheists many years ago and know exactly what he's taking about. I hit rock bottom and turned my life over to Christ, the empty void was gone, knowing one day I'll be heaven because of Jesus dying for me on the cross! If you seek HIM, you will find HIM.
