I build/paint both Warhammer and gunpla kits, and the sheer amount of stuff you get for the same price in a gundam kit is eye-opening. If GW kits were priced like gunpla, you could get a Knight Castellan for $55 instead of $170...

GW could sell sprues with only torsos legs and backpack to use all fucking heads and weapons, like from skitarii box you can build extra 20 minis with ease.

The Veteran Guardsmen (Krieg) box is another one that you can get a lot of mileage from. With 10 extra bodies and a few backpacks I managed to squeeze another 10 minis from the box. To avoid the issue you had with 2-handed weapons, I built the stock models with those options and saved the single arms for my proxies.

I got my spare Krieg bits and slapped them on some Cadian bodies. It's a bit fiddly to put together since not everything fits perfectly, but a bit of sprue goo will fix them right up!

Cataphractii terminators are one of the kits I feel would benefit most from this approach. You get SO MANY arms, but not enough shoulder pads for them all, and since every cataphractii marine requires 4 pads it's also not particularly viable to get them from bits sellers.

What about the old Death-Watch-Veterans Kit ? As fas as I remember that has tons of extra weapon options, additional chapter specific and blank shoulder pads and heads ? Might be suited for this approach ?

@@kevinbray3724 They used to sell legion-specific outer shoulder pads, but don't anymore, but either way the plastic cataphractii still require 2 shoulder pads on every arm as they are layered, and the plastic cataphractii kit only has 10 of those inner shoulder pads.

Check out the "Catafrac"-Kits from Lordchammon on Cults. The shoulder pads are a free file and everythings's pretty much indistinguishable from the GW kit.

All primed im hard pressed to tell them apart. While I'm a terminator purist for my GK, I do love this kit. Harkens back to when GW made more fun to put together models. Clipping all the torso, legs, heads, and arms into piles and just mix and matching and posing everything is one of the simple joys of the hobby that seems lost. Cool to see every last bit get use but what about your barren bitz box now D:

This is my favorite use of a 3d printer. Not just printing a full army, which is cool, but printing the extra parts needed to stretch a GW box to its max.

The Tyranid Warrior kit has a lot of potential: you can make up to 12 of them from the box of 3 by simply printing additional legs, torsos, heads and tails (which are all identical). I recasted them with epoxy resin, which was messy, but once I get a 3d printer I will attempt it again. Great video, it really shows just how much untapped potential remains in 3d printing for extending these boxes.

Stupid Q, what are you adding/using from the GW plastics that is spare? If you are home printing legs, torso, heads, tail, you might as well print the weapons too lol

@@jamgooandyou Sure you can, but the weapons are more complex and require the most modeling. Doing the body, legs and tails alone is trivial since they are repeated (12x).

This is the best way to use resin prints, expanding on kits that otherwise go to waste. GW should really sell bodies separately, they do it to themselves.

you could easily double the amount of necron warriors in their kit, or the starter set for 40k, which comes with the same ammount of warriors + a warden +some space marines for the same price

That could be epic! The challenge will be finding suitable stl's. I can't say I've come across any great DG proxies yet, but truthfully I haven't looked very hard. I'm sure they're out there!

Can confirm, actually. Gifted my old printer to a friend, he built around 20 PMs from one box using a combination of printed generic Heresy/CSM bodies, greenstuff and leftover bits.

I'm pretty sure you can get at least 16 models out of the sisters of silence box with a bit of 3d printing which in total gives you 4 different units 1 witchseekers, 1 vigilators, 1 prosecutors and 1 knight centura

Extra bits are never useless! They can be used for kitbashing and basing which makes them invaluable! And the sprues can be used to make sprue-goo which is great for filling in spaces left from kitbashing!

I haven't played 40k in well over 10 years... my nephew is just starting and I went around to my old mans place to dig through his shed and try to find my old all metal grey knights army so I can play a game or 2 with him... you however have inspired me to warm up the printer and just do some cool proxies since I couldn't find my old models. I think giving the Space Wolves Grey Hunters box a similar treatment could produce a nice result. There's a lot of leftover arms and weapons in it as well.

Lol, tip for fellow printing nerds just getting into it, anycubic/elegoo resin is trash unless you want cheap undetailed minis. Switch to siraya tech navy grey, you get so much more detail and looks amazing! Vulcan is probably the best resin out there as well, but I haven’t used it personally to vouch for it.

Interesting perspective, I've personally been blown away by the detail I get from the Anycubic standard resin and my Mono X printer. I've not tried a Sirayatech resin yet as they're 5 or 6 times more expensive here unfortunately. I'd recommend people start with the cheap stuff, see how they like it and then if they feel the need to - experiment with more premium stuff then.

Very inspiring video, I've got a classic box of Raptors/Warp Talons. Always thought it was a shame having all those spare conversion pieces sitting around after assembling them as Warp Talons. Utilized a lot of the tips and scaling resources you used here to find a home for all those conversion bits and am now the proud owner a squad of Talons and my newly printed Raptors. Still some spare conversion bits and accessories sitting around but I wasn't looking to use every single piece of plastic anyway.

The older Ork boyz box would be good for this. Fortunately for those without access to a 3d printer, the pieces are well suited to some simple two part moulds made with blue stuff. I’ve really managed to stretch my kit using this method and a little help from the bits box of course.

Blood Angels Death Company kit could go a long way with some extra bodies. It comes with jump pack and normal backpack options, bolters or chainsword and pistol and loads of extra special melee weapons.

i do the same with my imperial guard. Ive had some of the old infantry boxes so without all the extra weapons and i just make all 10 of the models with more unique poses and use the leftover weapons with printed legs and torso's to make more generic looking soldiers to fill out the rest of the squad.

Hahaha, I did the same with the Exaction Squad Kill Team. I could only make 10 models and the cyber mastiff. Had so many pieces left, so I printed a bunch of bodies. Now I ended up with nearly 30 Arbites models :D

@@OnceinaSixSide is an interesting question doing the same principal can you take a combat Patrol and turn it into a 2K army with a little resin. You almost quadrupled the size of one troop unit... and combat patrols are about 500 points

Anyway to your question yes I have a box set there's deathwatch that I haven't opened because I've got 1 box and that's like 5 marine's with ♾ weapon options on that sprue but I'm not a kill team player so I haven't built it yet. I'll need more bodies if I want to get a small force for Grim Dark.

Orks orks orks! Boys pack can become 20 boys instead of 10 - you only need some legs, torsos and a few heads, and nob squad - they have A TON of arms and weapons, but only a few legs and torsos

In the good old days of epoxy casting, we copied legs in some 40K armies. GW limits the number of figures by limiting the leg sets. We got an average of 16 figures out of 10 figure boxes. I also created Imperial Guards in lying position under camo nets so that you never see the (non-existing) legs. :D

This was a great idea. Thanks for the heads up about DMG Minis. I absolutely love the over-the-top look of Grey Knights. Chad's work is amazing. What a sculptor. Signed up for his Patreon. Grey Knights are getting pretty old as far as designs go. They are from 2011 (5th Ed) and it kind of shows in that their poses are less dynamic and less interesting than newer models. These will be great for playing Grimdark Future.

DMG makes some great stuff. From my understanding, he's having to redo them cause GW hit him with a cease and desist letter not long ago, but he didn't fly off the handles and bash them every chance he got like other people has. They worked with him and let him know what he had to change about his designs.

I need to do this for my tau, SO BAD. I have 2-3 little tool separators FILLED with bits, of all kinds of models. Kroot, Fire Warriors, you name it. I have too many bits. It'd take me weeks to print, assemble, and prime all of those potential models. I'm 100% bookmarking this video as reference for the future!

I print basic Terminator bodies without arms and every box doubles the amount you can put together, that way all the delicate parts like claws and hammers, are all still made out of plastic and won´t break if you drop them.

Man this a great video, with the primer on you can`t even tell the difference between them. For age of sigmar, the trogoth boxs have enough for double the units in the box, except no legs, belly and neck. I'm waiting to find a good 3D printed model for it.

One of my biggest complaints with that box was how many extra bits I had laying around for that box which was fine for kitbashing other things but... now with 9th ed out making everything "By the box", squeezing every single model out of what comes in a box kit is more viable than ever now.. especially with the whole "Accursed Weapon" and "Berzerker Chainblades" for terminators and berzerkers specifically making any variation just aesthetic (which I definitely prefer cause I can play wysiwyg easier now)

Neat - reminded me of the old story about making a pot of soup with a stone....... Put stone in water and bring to a boil..... then add some carrots, leeks, salt, pepper etc....

Comes to show that, ina GW box, you are paying for bodies, the rest is extra. Good kits would be the AoS Troggoths and Gargants, since they have so many extra arms and bits, but only limited bodies. However, it would be a lot harder to print fitting bodies, since the arms have part shoulder and chest as well.

I just love the DMG stuff! Most of my GK are printed Silver Wardens. Imo better proportions, better poses and for most parts a slightly better look over all.

I would love to see a series of videos like this. Picking some troops kits with lots of options and seeing how you can stretch them with printing. Maybe Chaos Marine Legionaries? Mk. III from heresy? Cultists? Guardsmen?

I dont think the legs and some pieces look less detailed. But its still a very neat idea to use the old pieces. You saved both money and plastic that would be left to gather dust

With the tau fire warrior kit, with the help of 3D printing you can get 30 troops out of the one kit, 20 fire warriors with pulse rifles and carbines and 10 breachers.

I love the idea behind this! Personally I don't think I'll do exactly the same, I will use this method to stretch the kit, I'll just not be using the 3D printed heads or backpacks.

If you get a chance, doing a video on something like silicon casting for bigger kits that can make one of a number of options (e.g. Keeper of Secrets or Shalaxi Helbane; Krondys or Karazai) would be my dream video. Also to note, Siraya Tech has a resin supposedly ideal for casting. Haven't used it myself just yet though. Okay that said...Man this was tailor made for me, haha. I love 3D printing as a hobby and just to print stuff, but I still buy GW minis that I enjoy. As a result, I really have no need for bits as I'd just design and print a specific part if I needed. This was the perfect video that I never knew I needed.

I have a good deal of these same bits. They're awesome. I would have probably done the same, but I like the scaled up versions better than the original sized Grey Knights. Also, I don't have a 3D printer.
