Erik Reichenbach is the guy, infamously, known for giving away individual immunity to Natalie and then being called the dumbest player ever by Parvati Shallow. But, was it actually the dumbest move or is there something deeper that reveals why he made this decision? Let's find out.

Tyson's logic made sense when you hear his explanation. The edit was really bad to make Tyson look stupid. Tyson's logic was this. He wanted Russ to stay so he could use him and the idol to take control of the game later on when Russ had nowhere else to turn since he had no connections with other people the way Parvati did. He thought for sure Parvati, Danielle and Russell knew the vote was being split 3-3 on Russ and Parvati. He thought the logical thing for them to do was to vote against each other so that they wouldn't go homes. Tyson thought the final vote would be 5-4 with Danielle voting against Russell. So Tyson flipped his vote to get rid of Parvati in case Russell chose not to play the idol for some reason. He didn't think Russ would play the idol on Parvati since all logic would indicate he would be sending himself home by doing so.

I have often thought that Erik received a bad rap for having his move called dumb. It can be debated whether it was a good move or whether he should have done it or whether we would have done it but I think he made the move that he could be at peace with. Something you didn't mention but I want to: In that convo with Cirie, before Erik blabbed out going to the end with her and Parv, Cirie set it up by saying something like "do you think Natalie's the biggest threat or do you think Amanda is the biggest threat?". The answer Erik thought/said was "well man, I guess they both are come to think of it!", which then led him to say that. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've always thought Cirie intentionally set him up to say that with Natalie listening. Cirie is A M A Z I N G at Survivor. She's so good.

When Natalie told him, "I'm thinking about your Jury votes" or something like that that should have been a giveaway. Why would another player who's planning to make it to the final 3 with you be trying to get you jury votes?
@justinpalful
@justinpalful 3 жыл бұрын
In the end, the necklace was the only irreversible mistake he made. He could have fixed all the mistakes later in the game either by repairing his relationships, a good speech in FTC or winning immunity (less doubt). However, giving up immunity made that all impossible. Yeah, Erik was a consistently bad player but it still doesn't change that the dumbest thing he did was give Natalie his 1 in 4 chance at a million.

So it seems the move was more Julia from EoE, where the web of confusion spiralled to the one eliminated, rather than planned manipulation to get the biggest threat out, because to a degree Natalie does seem to be thinking about it seeing she's in the bottom of the alliance but saw the opportunity when he actually did it.

honestly the barometer i use for "dumb moves" in survivor is always the risk vs reward factor. i don't actually think this move is as dumb as most people have made it out to be, same with jt's idol move in hvv. both have great payoff if their reads had be correct - erik would have solidified a final 3 with two people he can beat in individual immunity and gained jury votes, jt would have taken out parvati and flipped russell to the heroes side. these are solid reasons to make a big move, the reason they failed isn't because the move was necessarily bad but because they misread the situation. truly dumb moves are when the risk factor fully outweighs the reward - ex. james not playing one of his two idols when there was only three chances left to play them, or tyson voting himself out in heroes vs villains. that one always gets me, tyson's whole reason to flip the vote was because he wanted parvati gone instead of russell, but failed to realize that if russell was telling the truth and was flipping his vote to parvati that parvati would have been voted out anyway? anyway, i don't think the stupidity of a move can be measured by the outcome. both jt and erik had bad reads but the moves themselves would have been genius if they had worked out.

Another good example of high risk for little reward from Survivor China- Denise voting out Erik (different Erik from this one!). Denise knew she was at the bottom of her alliance, and as such her chances of getting past the final four were very slim if she stuck with them. By flipping to Peih-Gee and Erik, she had a 50% chance of going to the final three (because they would draw rocks for a tiebraker). She still decided to stick with her alliance and not flip, and predictably got booted at 4.

Tyson thought That Parvati and Danielle were going to vote Russel (for the same reason that Russel was allegedly going to vote Parvati) so the vote would be 4-4 with him as the decider; I'm not saying that it wasn't a terrible terrible move but it wasn't entirely without reason (also I honestly credit this as much a good play by Russel for selling the idea as bad play by Tyson). I maintain that JT's move was necessarily bad because the risk factor was extremely high and it wasn't provoked (ie JT had a potentially winning hand without making this move but chose to make the move) he also had little basis for making his read (and what he did have, the fact that Russel was cast as a villain, gave him reason to doubt that the "flip Russel" part would actually happen even if there was a girl's alliance). I don't think JT's position is even necessarily better for making the play if his shot in the dark (because that's what it was) hits. In Erik's case I think he was largely coached into thinking ([possibly correctly, possibly not) that he was drawing dead to win the million without making a dramatic move (Like with Tyson I give the girls a significant amount of credit for doing the coaching). The interesting thing about James not playing one of his idols is that it's not obvious without hindsight when the correct time to play an Idol is if you don't have a sense that someone is going to take a shot at you. If James should have played an idol at six then why shouldn't he play one at seven, or at eight?

I agree at face value, it wasn’t as bad as a move as they make it out to be. Especially since repeatedly saying how incredibly stupid it is takes credit away from how effectively all the ladies manipulated him. I’ve also noticed in games like Big Brother and Survivor although people will say “everyone is against me”, they will often make moves that are suboptimal for a person who’s actually in that position because the reality of being in that position is either too much to handle psychologically or too much to overcome in the game.

I came into this video thinking that it is a dumb decision no matter what, but I see what your saying. I still have the same thought that it was a dumb move no matter the circumstance though and here's why: Erik already saw specifically Natalie manipulate Jaison to not play his idol, that right there is a red flag to not be so trusting of their word. Of course it's easy to say this considering the stress that he was in, but I would never call it a smart decision to do. It was straight up manipulation from the girls by using what he valued against him, in the end he was just played in my opinion.

Just went back to see the final 4 and final 3 immunity challenges, I genuinely think Erik would have won both of them had he kept the necklace at 5. Especially if they vote Amanda out at the final 5 since she was the winner of both of those immunities, Erik more than likely wins them both and takes Nat to the end? I don't know the order of who goes if Erik won those 2.

Should Natalie and Cirie have actually stuck with Erik? Considering how the season turned out, probably. Natalie definitely should have tried harder to work with Erik because she knew she was on the outside of the women’s alliance. I don’t think Erik was a huge jury threat - he had Ozzy, James and Jason possibly voting for him but I don’t see any women voting for him including Eliza. Cirie’s was a more of a gamble but she was clearly not going to the final 2 with Amanda and Parvati. I think Cirie could have persuaded Natalie to side with her over Erik, especially as Cirie flipping would make her look less of a jury threat.

this argument ignores the fact that everyone assumed there would be a Final 2 - but only due to multiple medevacs/quits they changed it to Final 2. everyone was shocked they changed it to Final 2 - so Cirie got REALLY unlucky, she would almost 100% win against Parv and Amanda.

I think there's no question that this is one of the dumbest moves in Survivor history if not the dumbest. There was zero reason for Erik to trust the people trying to convince him, and their arguments really made no sense. There's a reason why when Cirie first floated the idea, Natalie responded incredulously, "Who would fall for that?" And she's right. The answer to that question should have been nobody.

I’m Ngl, I can understand people in these comments trying too defend Erik but let’s be as honest as possible here…HE GAVE UP IMMUNITY AT FINAL FIVE. Like it’s one thing too give up immunity bc you have an idol and your trying too make a big move or something along those lines but the thing is, these girls were playing everybody left and right the entire season. Ozzy, Jason, James didn’t get played bc of his medical evacuation but he was still blind sided and on the outs when they took out Ozzy. Erik is not dumb by any means, you had front row seats in watching these women dominate since day, you gotta understand that this is a game, your fighting for a million dollars, and the ONLY way that you are safe, is by winning immunity. And he gave it up.

Well Call him stupid if you want but Erik still got the last laugh. Cirie and Natalie could have gone further by working with him. And i think in an interview Erik said he thinks he would have sucked in the last immunity challenge so if that does happen Cirie goes to the end with Natalie and she wins. While Nat gets runner up. Even if Erik does win and vote Cirie out Nat still atleast gets runner up.

It's understandable to try that move but it was still very dumb. You have to make it to final tribal first before you worry about the jury votes. As Tony said for WAW, let your game speak for itself. Erik won 3 straight immunities up to that point and could have won the final 4 AND final 3 challenges to make that 5 wins in a row. He would be the 3rd person at that point in Survivor history to win 5 in a row behind Colby & Terry. If he brought Natalie to final 2 he still would have a hard time winning. Natalie would have gotten votes from: Amanda, Alexis & Parvati, maybe Cirie. Erik would have gotten votes from: Ozzie, James & Jason. I don't know which direction Eliza would have gone so she would be the deciding vote if it is a tie or a Natalie win.

Natalie and Cirie actually should have stuck with Erik considering how the season turned out. Apparently Parvati found the idol in this episode so they could have blindsided her with an idol (and Parvati would be the dumbest Survivor ever instead of Erik because F5 is the last chance an idol can be played so to not use it is a huge blunder haha).

Erik's fault isn't that he's dumb - he's too honest (obviously), and he's a people-pleaser. The dominos were set by the time he told Amanda he was considering voting for her WITHOUT giving her an easy out (voting for Cirie). I don't necessarily think telling Amanda she was on the chopping block was the worst thing in the world, because she would be an extremely unlikely ally. If she had remained as Parv's little puppy dog, and ratted him out, no big deal. But if Amanda had been receptive to the "who's a jury threat" argument, she would totally go along with voting out Parv or, more likely, Cirie. Really, just keeping as many targets as possible off Alexis & Natalie backs should have been priority #1, followed by flushing Amanda's idol, and he had a perfect opportunity to do both.
