They polled the audience at the reunion show for season 1. I looked back and it looks like I was wrong. Only 39% said he didn’t play fair. But 51% said they wouldn’t do what he did to win. Which is insanity.
@roger_towny_jr
@roger_towny_jr 3 жыл бұрын
@@DeviousDrew100 Keep in mind, it was the first season. Before it aired, most people didn't know what the word "alliance" even meant. People went in watching this show with an idea of how Survivor should work: that people vote unbiasly for who they feel is performing the worst at adapting to the elements, and/or who they feel should morality/ethically go (That's how the Pagong Tribe tried to play it.) I think also people's disdain for it happened to do with the fact that Pagong wasn't playing the same game they were, so Rich and the rest of the Tagi 4 were basically shooting fish in a barrel with little to no actual competition. Combined that with the fact that Pagong had a more fun loving likable vibe among its members and those were the people the majority of America were rooting to win, I can see how first time viewers watching them just get mercilessly picked off could come across as unfair. Going into Australia, when all the castaways come in with and understanding of how the game is played, and both tribes are playing by the same rules, it becomes much easier for the audience to get behind the concept of alliances and no longer see it as immoral. That's just Standard Operating Procedure of the game.

I remember getting into an argument with a lady at work when Richard won Survivor instead of Kelly. She couldn't get past the idea that Kelly won all those immunities and challenges and still lost the game. In her mind Survivor was like a sporting competition where whoever won the most challenges won the game. She just couldn't get past the idea that Survivor was only part sporting competition but it was also a social game. Richard Hatch won because he was better at networking than Kelly Wigglesworth. It's a good thing too because I think the show would have been cancelled twenty years ago if it had been all about the physical challenges.

The a majority of the success of Survivor can be attributed to Richard creating The Alliance Strategy. Imagine if one of the clueless Pagong tribe had won this season- and the public saw Survivor as just a silly game of chance and no real strategy needed. Richard has put Survivor on the map... and then Russell Hantz totally re-invented the show in Season 19.
@Murmurrr
@Murmurrr 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t fully understand why people give him credit for “creating” The Alliance Strategy. Alliances are an inevitability, it’s literally the entire point of the game. Without Alliances you don’t have strategy, it’s all pointless random voting. The fact that nearly everyone else didn’t understand the point of the game “outwit, out play, out last” makes innovation extremely easy. You just have to be the guy there to win, and in a room full of people “looking to have a good time” you’re probably going to take over. Richard was a great winner and represented the what it really takes to “play the game.” I just don’t give much in the way of innovation for something as basic as an alliance.
@sirmateo75
@sirmateo75 3 жыл бұрын
@@Murmurrr watch the other tribe on that season. It was a bunch of random voting... Richard had a game plan on Day 1. It's easy to not see his innovation 40 seasons later bc we just expect it now. Without Richard Hatch and his strategy... Survivor would have fizzled out after a season or two.

Hello. I usually don't request, but could you do a video on Brian Heidik? I recently watched Survivor: Thailand.. it wasn't as bad as I had heard but it was uneventful. Brian is a fascinating winner to me and their doesn't seem to be any real videos on KZfaq discussing him at length. I was surprised to find out he was actually recruited specifically for the show instead of the usual. Plus, he's often described as a sociopath (I get it but I think it's a bit ott) and, according to production, he was unlike any person they had ever dealt with before. His own tribe seemed to believe he could do no wrong and they believed him right up until he betrayed them all. Thanks for the video.

Probably because it was the first one of its kind ever, but I'm always still fascinated by the first season. It's so interesting to see how they did every aspect of it, when kinda nobody knew what they were doing or if this was going to be a thing. I read Jeff's book way back when about this first season and it was so interesting - he talks about stuff like how most of the Pagong people basically thought the show was going to go nowhere, so they were constantly goofing around, they tried to vote Jeff out, etc, whereas Tagi was largely the opposite. I don't want to diminish Rich's win because I think he really did play a great game, but I also think a huge part of that is that nobody was really playing as well until it was too late. And while all of his strategies worked great here in season 1, most of it is not stuff that would fly even a handful of seasons later. Still, he 100% outplayed everyone really well and eliminated any potential threat (ie Gretchen who was awesome at survival potentially upsetting his spot as main provider, he saw that Greg had caught on to him and was trying to play him back, etc). I love the dynamics in this season (and how we got to see so much camp life, which I've always loved seeing, and is virtually non existent in new school survivor) and it will always be the first, OG season. ❤👌

Very good video here! Loved Hatch on this season as he was such a great character that I immediately was hooked to. While he wasn't the one to start the alliance, he was clearly the leader of it and seemed to be in control pretty much the whole game. Now part of this is due to the Pagong tribe being dumb and not trying to amount an opposing force sooner than they did but he stayed loyal to the people he needed to and formed strong social bonds with people like you said in the video that was able to get him the votes he needed. He also had quite a few very funny moments imo such as the F6 challenge that will never get old to me and despite the controversy it caused, I found him being naked to be pretty funny this season. He's a huge reason for me why this season is as good as it is although I do wish we could have had someone that was an opponent on an equal playing field with him as Kelly was way too wishy washy to be able to stick to what she was doing. I wish there were more story videos for this season because there are quite a few memorable characters on this cast that I would have loved to see a video like this on like Rudy, Greg, Sue etc...

I think Richard is smart enough to adapt to a modern game but he def benefited that in the early seasons, if you were a provider and fun to be around (and he was both), you didn't get targeted. "Threats" to win the game wasn't really a vote out consideration until there were very few people left. The early seasons pretty much booted lazy people at camp and people who got on people's nerves. True in season 2. Any idiot can watch australian outback now and can see Tina and Colby as the poster couple for getting to the end and one of them winning yet I don't think they got any votes for almost the whole game.

I never saw Rich as a villain. I mean, he doesn't make a great first impression, I thought he was kind of a cocky whiner in the first episode, but I was wrong. The guy is smart. Always watching. Always listening. Always thinking. Always weighing the alternatives and measuring what the other players can give to him or take from him. He wasn't a young guy. He wasn't an old guy. He wasn't weak. He wasn't in great shape. He sure wasn't stupid. His mind is what put him leaps and bounds beyond anything the considerably younger and stronger Pagong tribe could throw at him. They might beat him in most physical challenges, but they couldn't out think that dude. Their youth was no match for his ruthlessness. Richard Hatch wasn't a hero or a villain. But he was the king of Palau Tiga and nobody could take that away from him!

Fun Fact About Survivor Vanuatu: Vanuatu is the 9th Season. What number is the inversion of 9? 6. The 6th Season is Amazon. Amazon and Vanuatu were the first two seasons in which the tribes were divided by gender. In Amazon, the men had the majority during the merge, but the last woman standing [Jenna] won the last two immunity challenges and ultimately won the game. In Vanuatu, the women had the majority during the merge, but the last man standing [Chris] won the last two immunity challenges and ultimately won the game. The runner-ups of both seasons (Matt and Twyla) were work horses around camp who arguably played better than the winners strategically, but both ultimately lost do to their lack of competent social skills. The oldest members of both juries respectively (Butch and Scout) voted for the runner-ups. Amazon and Vanuatu [seasons 6 and 9] are nigh literal inversions of each other.

The snake wasn't deadly. It was a mildly venomous mangrove snake that isn't really dangerous to humans. The snake didn't want to be in the water because its not a banded krait like Hatch thought it was.

I love Survivor but I started watching it with Season 7 and was a dedicated fan watching every week through Season 15 then it became hit or miss because of life. I always heard Richard was a horrible villain in Season 1. So I just got Paramount+ to watch all the seasons from the beginning and I was completely wrong about everything I heard. He was one of the only playing the game. Everyone else was stupid saying, “we don’t need alliances.” The votes were so scattered and when they saw four votes keep coming up, they still did nothing. They knew Rudy, Kelly, Sue, and Richard were in an alliance and still did nothing. Remember I am just judging him from Season 1 because I didn’t like what he did to Sue in Season 8, that was horrible. But he isn’t a villain, he played the game. People I consider villains are people like Boston Rob and Johnny FairPlay who are just evil. But Richard outwitted everyone. Now I would be interested in seeing how he would have done when the game wasn’t new and people knew you needed alliances.

his video felt like it was half about Kelly.... who seemed to have two personalities. Flipping from hating alliances and liking it. But her actual strategy seemed to be more about playing both sides.... almost seems like she was doing something underhanded herself. But the show doesn't bash her like it tries to picture Hatch, she just came off as kinda dumb from this video atleast. Indecisive and stuff, stuck between playing smart with the alliance or not doing that..

Richard Hatch was so disappointing and so much less interesting when he returned in All Stars, but they had a previous winner bias from the very beginning of that season, so I think he wrote of his chances of winning early and just phoned it in for the rest of the game. I wish they could get him back for a season where he can actually be himself, before he gets too old for it, but I think that's unlikely to happen.

I don't see Richard as the villain. He was the only one playing the game for what it was and playing to win from the start. He was the first to really recognize that alliances would be what a survivor winner would have to do outside of winning immunity challenges. Having said that...Richard is not great enough to be the villain...he's not smart enough to be an evil genius...he was strong in some areas but he lost a lot of challenges and his only survival ability on the island was catching fish. Richard was extremely lucky to have ended up winning. And sometimes I do wonder if it was a fix like that lawyer Stacey claimed...she actually sued the shows producer for lost wages. I just went and watched the first season recently and it was pretty interesting. Richard could have been voted off a number of times and it never happened. I thought Rudy was the most impressive. The first two booted off of season 1 were the two other elderly people. Rudy made it to the final 3! That's insane. That says so much in my opinion. I think Rudy was also a fan favorite and arguably the best part of the show. I would actually love to see a true survivor show...no alliances. Imagine that?

The Sue Situation was all fake, he never needed to apologize. BOTH needed to. Hatch shouldn’t have been naked, But Sue, knowing he was nude walked towards the balance beam he was at even though there was a completely empty one. So both are at fault, don’t be one sided

It's unfair that you brought people together to make more structured and under control votes instead of random votes and just hope your vote ends up being who goes. So strange looking back on season 1 and seeing totally normal tactics to be considered cheating and unfair. Alliance strats are some of the most basic tactics of the game. Even weirder when you saw some people in early seasons refuse to make alliances even after this became a quintessential strat that's not even really a strategy it is just a part of the game, and relying on alliances and playing socially/manipulatively is what it evolved into. May seem obvious now looking at twenty years of history, but first season players were truly the pioneers of uncharted territory. Richard became more of a villain because his arrogance began to slowly show, and he was 'ruthless' for peoples expectations of the show at the time. And of course being both gay and admitting he thinks religion is useless.... that probably didn't help his case back in those days either.
