By popular demand (it's been a while since I've had to say that!) comes the second in what should, by rights, turn into a relatively long-running series of sorts. Quite by accident, no less! Questions abound about painting WWII infantry of each and every nation involved, "How do I paint them with Contrast?" Well, Contrast not being alone on the market, sometimes it's a case of choosing the right tool for the job... and I've scoured the 'Big Three' ranges for how you can paint your Bolt Action, Chain of Command, or even Flames of War miniatures with these one-coat paints.

The Vallejo Xpress Speed Paints do a good job and I am impressed with the color of the jacket as it looks very authentic. Thanks for sharing this.

Ive mixed up some of your techniques. I prime in white and then paint the mud wash featured in some old vids of yours! I then use the speed paints and it works perfectly! The best way to paint rank and file for good quick table top results

Fantastic! I love your guides and your timing for speed-painting BA figures is perfect, as I am just starting in the hobby. I would love to see a US airborne (M42 D-day scheme) and Waffen SS in this series as well! Thanks for all these wonderful guides!

Literally just the other day someone asked about this on the Army Painter Fan Page on FB and I suggested that perhaps they recommend to you a video idea of US Troops done only with Speedpaints 🤣

I'd kinda resigned myself to the fact that once I'd done the German Grenadiers, everyone else was going to need a swing at bat. 😂

Fine work once again. A whole company of lads painted like that would look fairly striking, I think. Unsolicited Geardo nitpick - the chinstrap on the rear of the helmet should be khaki webbing - only the front strap (for the helmet liner) was leather. Still very fine work in any case. Cheers!

Ah, nuts! I always forget that rear strap! Somehow I only ever think of the chin strap being canvas, and completely forget the rear one. I don't mind it being pointed out, I just wish I'd remember it next time! 😂

So then, my wish list for the old speed painting techniques are many and diverse, ie/ US Airborne, US Infantry (Winter), Italian Bersaglieri, German Panzer Grenadiers (Winter), German Fallschirmjager, British Paratroopers, Commonwealth Infantry (Pacific War Zone), Japanese Infantry (Army), Deutsche Afrika Korps, 8th Army & Finnish troops! You know just to keep you out of mischief like and not because my pile of shame includes all of these armies for Bolt Action and also many types of WW2 vehicles for each army...

Again a very good tutorial. You mention several times that it doesn't quite resemble the historic colours in some areas, where would you not use the speed paints but use regular acrylics?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 3 ай бұрын
If I were aiming for accuracy, I'd swap out the speed paints entirely and just use acrylics. Mixing and matching them on the same miniature doesn't quite work style-wise, I find.

What would be your recommended recipe for Aly's Brown Liquid now with some of the changes to Army Painter and Citadel washes lately?

For the burnished metal parts i use dark gun metal from the new game color range. It's a wonderful color for that, in my opinion. And thanks for the video. Little question, what are you doing when you must overpaint a xpress color? I've ordered the starterset and i'm testing it on an ambush starterset of mantics empire of dust. I'm using copper brown and mystic blue mostly. And i couldn't overpaint the colors. Is that normal? I don't know exactly why the contrasts/speedpaints/xpresscolors are the way to go. 😅 Enough, time to get some schnitzels. Best greetings from tyrol. 🤙🏻

I have a dumb question. How do you keep your hydro paper from drying out on your wet pallet? Mine is always drying out while I paint and I can't figure out why
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 3 ай бұрын
Hopefully you've got the sponge sheet underneath the paper? Remember that they aren't meant to stay wet indefinitely, but you should definitely be able to paint a few miniatures without it going dry. Keep a dropper bottle of water handy and put a few drops in at the corners of the sponge sheet intermittently, refresh the water level in there. Make sure the sponge is good and wet before you put your paper down on it, too.

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I'll give the dropper bottle a try. That's where it starts drying out is the edges. Thanks for the advice!

Theres a weird grainy finish on the xpress colors that looks really off
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 3 ай бұрын
It's a combination of the rising heat in my room under the lights (uh-oh, summer's gonna suck) and the texture from the drybrushing. You could just paint from a white primer and get rid of that, or a little touch of medium will help mitigate it a bit.

There's a video using Contrast on a cyberpunk-themed miniature a while back, he's very bright yellow - hard to miss the thumbnail if you search 'cyberpunk' on the channel here! I have to admit I'm not a fan of the Infinity miniatures so those specifically aren't going to show up on the channel, but that guide might have some useful suggestions.
