Leo is the biggest success of the adaptation for me. Because he portrays Dexter in such a way... You GET why Emma loved him for all those years. That's the difference between the movie and the series. I read the book like 10 times since 2010. Watched the movie 10 times. And only when I saw this Dexter I realised the depth of his character and their unconditional love seems justified. Leo, you are a GENIUS!

so true! i couldn't stand him in the book tbh but in the series he's so charming and charismatic and cheeky, that it makes it so easy to see why emma would love him

Leo was amazing, I cried during the scene where he was crying in bed… because yes, it’s a really sad scene but I’ve seen the movie beforehand so I knew Emma’s death was coming… but I realized I was crying because his acting was so beautifully believable and real. His acting is so moving!

Both of them deserve it. Ambika had to quickly learn the Yorkshire accent, which was challenging for her, and she had to portray a Northerner convincingly, which she did very well!

Leo Woodall's Dexter is so much better, more symphathetic and likeable than the film's (and definitely the book's, but that goes without saying) and I think it comes down to the little things. When he agrees to spend the day with her after the initial night together, it genuinely seems like he wants to spend more time with her. Meanwhile, in the movie, he's kind of guilt-tripped into it, and he's so adamant that you can't help but think "does he even like her?". Netflix's Dexter, despite being an asshole at many occassions (that's the point, I guess), just has more redeeming qualities that made me root for him to get better. The film's Dexter... not so much.

no fr i keep going on about how leo delivers lines in ways I would never have imagined !! he's plays Dexter so... warm? and soft?? so much so that from the FIRST EPISODE you're immediately like "oh he's in love with her." he was honestly such a good casting choice bc he's such an improvement on book and film dex. props to the casting team for that

@@simdivya agreed 100%. He is softer, warmer, so much more gentle. And it doesn't make him less masculine at all, but just adds so much depth. Just mind blowing!

That scene when Dexter wanders alone in his empty home, when everyone has left, and you hear Jeff Buckley singing Lilac Wine, that did it for me. The music is wonderful in this series, it really punches your gut. I expected nothing from this show, just saw it mentioned somewhere and gave it a try. I think it just changed me, it was so touching... heart rending.

Loved your analysis. I guess since its a book/movie/series, we can get caught up in the drama. But in real life, having a friend like Dexter, who keeps you as a "in case of emergency break glass" friend, it would be traumatic for any girl, and the friendship would be dead long back. That being said, the series made me sob buckets. ❤😢

Leo is sensational! Any time he's on the screen I can see only him in the scene and it has nothing to do with his looks. True Master. It would've been a totally different story, if he wasn't Dexter. And (funny, but) only while watching the series I realized Dexter is the main character. Though I read the book like 15 times (and watched the movie).

I just finished watching the show and needed a place to heal post watch, so i found this video. I really had no idea what i signed up for, I saw it all over instagram and just thought its gonna be another random romcom-esk movie on Netflix, nothing serious, even the posters and all would suggest it. So I turned it on whilst cooking and man I wasnt ready. The format was amazing, the cinematography, the acting just phenomenal. At first I was a bit scpetical to see that the characters did not seem to age as the series went on, but now I actually feel like it gave the series this really special out of time atmosphere. You can see the time running, the age and decade is changing, technology is progressing, but these characters are a constant, despite their growth. Their love for each other is kind of trapped in time not only literally but also visually. It makes it feel like they have been holding on to this mutual appreciation from college and carry it with each other as the years pass. And the format of the one day really makes you feel like you are recalling former episodes as memories from years ago, even through you watched them only a few hours ago, I think its brilliant. I mean yeah I was blown away.

I tried to read the book like 12 years ago but I just couldn’t get through it. Even at 15, I understood that Dexter was the worst and I couldn’t stand that Emma pined after him for YEARS. But I guess that’s typical for a romance written by a man. But the show really flipped the script while keeping true to majority of the events in the book. I haven't had such a show hangover in my life. It broke me too and I can't seem to stop thinking about them.

I was okay, I didn't feel strongly about either character, I was fine. UNTIL the scene where Emma tells Dex she wants a baby, and Dexter has the AUDACITY to say 'I was waiting for you'. I lost it right then and there. I was gone, I was done, I was a puddle of tears from then until the end. Like how dare you say I was waiting for you and not expect me to relate/want the same from the love of my life?!

This show resonates with my life so much in that my now husband and I knew each other since the age of 15 but we’re never really together til I was 26 and him 29 and we lived two totally different lives during our times apart, we literally grew up together too 😢 ❤

I think the ending of the series answers the question Emma asked Dexter during their first night together about where he sees himself when he's forty. The "real-life" answer isn't as vague as his nor as judgmental as hers.

I LOVED the show. I haven't read the book or watched the movie (the movie was permanently on my TBW list, I was just never in the mood) and Leo and Ambika looked enchanting in the trailer- and that was a 100% correct impression. I have also watched their interviews after the show and they're such sweethearts 😭 Glad Leo wasn't left behind after the Vampire Academy cancellation (wish we've seen the whole cast in other projects) I also agree that it was needed for Emma and Dexter to grow into people that could be in a relationship, but I also kinda wish that they would grow alongside, maybe getting together at the wedding. Because I also think that the biggest thing that kept them apart was Dex's attitude towards everything, him being completely lost in life from the beginning, to the point of offering Emma FWB, effectively trying to reduce her to the "footnote" role. If he would find a more stable footing I think they could've been together long before 2000s, maybe even allowing Emma to write sooner if she wouldn't have to worry about the bills.

I'm glad that I didn't read the book 😊. This series gave me a roller coaster of emotions impossible to forget. 😢 I can't believe that the Dexter that you described from the book is the same guy from the series. Leo did an amazing job as a Dexter. You can't help it, not to love him at the end. I choose to ignore the part where you say about him getting in another relationship after Emma died. 😮 😢. Great video! Greetings from London!❤❤

for me, the main difference between book, movie and series is that the only Dexter that I didn't hate was the one on Netflix. The other two I couldn't even understand what Emma saw in them that made her like them. The Netflix version of Dexter is much more affectionate, it is clear from the beginning that he cares about Emma and that he has feelings for her. The final kiss in the series (the entire final scene, really) shows that they always liked each other, in the book it seems that Dexter is only interested in f*** and as a last resort

Thank you for this video! You explained it so well 😊. I have read the book and watched both adaptations and I agree that Dexter is much more annoying in the book. I also disliked the fact that he started a new relationship after the death - in a way Em and Dex only had three years as a couple, he should have taken longer to grieve (but it also fits with the character). I loved the way Tilly was incorporated in the Netflix show so much more than her portrayal in the book - she was a great counterpart to Emma. And yes, Ambika Mod was a fantastic Emma. She really made her relatable and I enjoyed her deadpan comments (there are also quite a few in the book). Both Leo and Ambika deserve an Emmy. I would rate the book in second place after the Netflix show, but before the 2011 film (it was enjoyable, but too short and therefore superficial to me).

I just went out to buy the book today after randomly clicking on this show not expecting much. Oh boy was I wrong! Adored it and cried so much at the ending which was so unexpected. It hurt, and just the realness of the whole story hurt but was also sometimes conforting. Idk it was so honest to life. And also highly relatable (made me miss my own years at Edinburgh haha). Interesting that people prefer the show, but I have to say reading the first few pages there are certain lines that are so much more poignant knowing how it ends. ouch. Will be rewatching it for sure.

I didn't know this was a book! I only vaguely remember watching the movie and hating it. I have no memories of what exactly happens in this story but I have a vivid image of me rolling my eyes at Anne Hathaway's character. She felt like a cardboard cut out of a man's "manic pixie dream girl" fantasy and I hated it. And the audacity to have her die in the end so that the MAN can learn his life lesson just pissed me off so much! That's all I remember but it was enough to make me remove the series from my watchlist as soon as I connected the dots that this tv show was actually an adaptation of the same story -- despite all my love for Leo Woodall, sorry I just couldn't😅 But I'm glad to hear it improved on the material at least!

I have never been so disappointed at the ending of a show ever. It was builing into a beautifull crescendo with the penultimate episode finally gettting them together and then in the last episode, she gets run over on her bike in the rain and dies? So deflating and disappointing. Last episode: finding out that she could never have children and breaking up, meeting up again to have a beer together, getting drunk and having sex. Next scene realizing that she was pregnant and cut to final scene with them back on Hampsted heath on a picnic blanket with their child, pan out to credits. What a beaufull ending that would have been. What were they thinking ending it this way?

There's a fundamental flaw in the authors vision of this book that makes me....not get it. I loved the series from the beginning till episode 12 (when they got together). I really don't believe these two characters should have ended up together/Emma giving in to dexters whims. By the time they got together (and this subtely comes out in the acting as well), I didn't feel "the spark" between them anymore. The series is PHENOMENAL only bc of the production and the actors but I genuinely didn't know what to make of the story in the last two episodes, after Emma died. I didn't see any major growth in Dexters character even after what was made to seem the biggest influence/anchor in his life died. Something about the story didn't tie in/make sense after they got together and especially after Emma died. Like I can't even hate Dexters bc I genuinely don't understand what the author was trying to do with the character and I've seen that ambiguity play out in both the movie and the show. But otherwise I def liked the show more than the movie (I actually did not like the movie precisely bc of Dexter and I thought it was the actors fault at the time but now I see it's just Dexters characterization developed by the author that creates this misunderstanding). I really agree with your point about men writing romance and it really showed in this book bc it seems that the author being scared of cliches changed the story at every cliche moment and was also afraid to fully commit to the romance/the relationship between two people eventually coming together and turned it into "this is actually a book about Dexter" at times. Felt like GoT S8 from episode 12 for me.
