When it comes to the bow hand, how many times have you heard, "You need to relax your right thumb," along with "You need to sink weight in with your fingers"?
It's one thing to know what needs to be done, but it's another thing entirely to be able to actually do it!
Here is an exercise that will help you develop the feeling of sinking in weight through the right hand fingers WITHOUT tensing up your right thumb. As a result, you will be able to pull a richer, more resonant sound, and your thumb will learn how to become a passive, supportive player at the frog of the bow.
In the comments below, let me know if this exercise works for you!

Sweet, that solved the problem brilliantly! I found that while playing if I think, "contact point to belly button" my bow hand recalls the technique pretty well. The scary part is maintaining bow pressure at the tip without reverting to bad habits. All in time, with practice. Thank you!

Excellent lesson. I see so many of my children wearing out their thumbs and lessons like this can help them relax. I don't know why you chose the name "AdultCello". There is no "adult" content and these are all excellent lessons for children as well.

Man! I just subscribed! look Im 38 years old now, and I started with the cello 2 years ago. I have full background on electric guitar but in classical guitar as well. So I know theory and read music and all that. So 2 years ago I found my self like ok I really want to play cello. And the first though that came to me of course was, hey but you are little too old ha. But it didnt care to me. So now im going to classes with a professional cellist which is GREAT! But yeah, I definitely have the same problem you mention about the thumb so I will practice this lesson! Sometimes (if not all the times) I just have to stop playing cuz my thumb is really hurting, so it demotivates me while im already warmed up ! So I have to stop for some minutes and loose concentration. This is very motivating since I would dream on presenting my self into an audition for our national orchestra (Im from Uruguay by the way), so knowing that there is people like me that just started "late" but became pro like you, is very very motivating! So, thanks for this channel and I will start following up you lessons my friend! Cheers from Uruguay!

Not sure I fully understand what you’re saying. A good point you raise is that bow movements up and down the string generate noise, whereas bow movements perpendicular to the string generate tone. I frequently see people bow at an angle with the bow going back and forth but also moving between the bridge and the end of the fingerboard. The tones are superimposed by the scratchy noise that you illustrated so clearly. Does this make sense?
