I am a jumper and definitely NOT a spinner. This explanation, however, makes more sense to me than the one I keep getting to pull my foot across in the scratch right off the bat. I always feel like I go off balance immediately rushing that when I am not feeling centered.

I think might also be a jumper as well. I read somewhere that figure skaters spin on the ball of there foot(probably right behind the toe pick). Hopefully this will also help ☺

This is really helpful! I definitely needed the prompt to take more time to center myself before pulling in. As a former ballet dancer, I find the hardest part for me is finding the proper part of my blade to center my weight on - I'm always too far forward/on my toes and my pick is scratching the ice through the whole dang spin - so frustrating! Thanks to more than a decade of ballet for that - it is REALLY hard to unlearn go up on your toes!! I'm just going to keep at it, love these videos!

I'm struggling with my "wind-up entry" into the spin, but this breaks it down so well. I will try entering with two feet, then bringing my free leg up. Thanks for this video! Joyce from Utah

I gotta be honest...I don't know who the target audience for this tutorial is, I don't think its for beginners. As someone currently in the learn to skate flow...I'm working on my 2 foot to 1 foot spin. I get about 1 revolution on 1 foot right now so you know what level I'm at. This has taken me a solid month to get..maybe 2 months since learning how to 2 foot spin. In this video you go on and talk about all these variations and inside 3 turns and entrances and edges etc...lots of this stuff is way beyond someone typically at this level. Maybe this video is for people who already can spin and want to know the different spin positions?

thank you for the feedback! i think it would be a good idea to make more of a beginner version or make a longer video with more step by step tips. i also am working on a basic skills series targeted towards beginners! for my channel i am hoping to have a bit of everything for beginners, intermediate, and advanced skaters

Same - trying to lift up one foot in a 2 foot spin and I get one or two revs before my balance goes. Even a good 2 foot spin is really hard to get right 100% of the time for me, its very hit and miss - the harder I try, the worse it gets !!!!

@@CoachMarySkating Indeed! I found the same, I struggle really hard with spins and would really like a very thorough description of how to keep the balance, both in 1 and 2 foot spins, how to center properly, not use the toe pick. It would be awesome to have a description that touches on the focus the skater must have on each body part for this, and 'how it should feel', so to speak, or what movement patterns to aim for =)

Thank you so much for making these videos!!! I got a new pair of blades a few months ago, and all my spins went out the window :( I have practiced multiple three turns and lift my toes while "spinning" to find the sweet spot. I have also tried bending my knee but no luck. Every time I attempt to spin, I go too forward on the blades which makes this horrible sound (Even in two-foot spins and basic one-foot spins) 😭😬 I was wondering if there is anything I can try that can help me spin? Once again, thank you for taking the time to make videos. 💗

hi, I noticed that when you bring back your arms you put your hands together toward the RIGHT side like in a jump : does it have to be done like this or should we put them in the center or to the left side as we are rotating on the left leg_left hip_left shoulder axis ??? (I had to slow down the video to see it at 2.26 min for ex)

Various coaches bring various styles, but whatever you do, your shoulders should be square to your hips. Don't twist your left shoulder back, leave it square with your hips.

In fact, getting the first few revolutions when your body is open and one leg is straight is the hardest part. If you manage to get it right -- the rest is easy. Your body is basically a whirligig. When it's rotating fast it's stable and it is hard to fall. Also it's crutial for transition from skating to spinning when doing fast rotations e.g. from backward crossovers.

You should look into rockering your set-up You can find a lot of videos about this on KZfaq. Apparently a rockered set-up resembles the feeling of ice-skates But I have only done research, so I am not speaking from experience I do think there was a channel of two iceskaters who were getting into rollerblading The name was something like Ice Skating Coach They aren't rollerblading pros but they do also give some feedback on the feeling of rockered set-ups compared to ice-skating I hope you can find what you are looking for!

My life is shredded like the flakes of snow that spray from my hockey stop. The scars on my heart are like traces scratched into the ice from razor sharp blades. Come, Mr. Iceman, use the Zamboni to lay a new surface on my heart, smooth over the scars and blemishes and leave it gleaming white, new, smooth and fresh like the glistening ice surface after the steaming hot water melts away the scratches, divots, gouges, and scrapes of the used and abused ice surface, until my heart is once again ready for use. My blades scratch the lines of my life. The wind from the speed of my spins fans the fire that burns my past. How I wish I could again have the joy of the sweet fresh faces and the free laughter of the young children that play on the ice. They don't know pain, they aren't encumbered by disappointment, they have never seen heartache. The Zamboni lays down clean fresh water over the wounds of my soul. Come Mr. Iceman, make me new again!
