So do you kick with your toe out or toe in?? I'm very curious.
@tovelokiwifeodindottir9936Ай бұрын
Toe out.
@tovelokiwifeodindottir9936Ай бұрын
First one is right second one is doing a waltz jump. You don't jump the way the second one is jumping. Even for someone who skated for 17 years it's hard to say in words with no visuals. Basically the first one is showing where you want your foot when you take off. Because you are using the back foot to launch yourself, you want your front foot already across your Back foot so you can pull in tight. There really isn't true kicking up into this jump like you see in other jumps. Your body doesn't spin the way the moving foot is going, it spins the opposite direction. It's hard to explain. It's would be better if you looked it up in videos so you can get visuals.

I teach follow through, so toe up and heel facing the ice. When you do off-ice, its hard to mimic the glide, so might look like a kick rather than follow through like the first video/look more like a waltz jump/axel. You end up having to step forward like a waltz jump off-ice. So I remind my students to be mindful of this!

I’m going to try this! I can definitely do it off ice!

Would you mind explaining where the body weight should be for this slide? It doesn't seem to be on the gliding leg. Is it more on the bent leg or bottom? And a little bit on the arms?
@CoachMarySkating25 күн бұрын
great question! i feel more weight on the leg behind slider, and maintain some weight still on the front so I can pull my chest up and squeeze my glute/hamstring to rise up. my arms just skim the ice, no weight really on there

In gymnastics, they had this trick. You do split jumps onto an ottoman. Then start putting pillows on top and split jumping onto those. Eventually you’ll have a nice tall split jump. I haven’t tried it on ice yet, I’ve only been skating for 10 weeks

[Day 1] Sorry, I have a question. I’ve been wanting to become a figure skater for quite some time now which is why I have finally decided to begin. I’m not sure how many times a day I should be doing this. I’m a beginner, of course. Have any recommendations?

I've been doing this everyday for two weeks and I have two things to say: 1. This stretching routine feels absolutely AMAZING. I do this before going to bed and it's the best thing ever, my body is so relaxed, it's great. 2. I'm seeing HUGE improvements in my flexibility. I've always been pretty flexible but I've never got to that point, even when I took dance class as a kid. Thank you so much for this video, it's a great routine and even though I'm no figure skater I'll keep doing it for a long time!!!

Also what Is an Arabian in figure skating? In gymnastics it is a front flip taking off from backwards (so half twist front flip). I think in figure skating it is a barrel roll or side 360?
@CoachMarySkating3 ай бұрын
a toe arabian is a difficult flying jump entrance as well, toe pick is used to assist sorry I'm not quite familiar with the gymnastics term!

More of this! What is the difference between a flying camel and a butterfly?
@CoachMarySkating3 ай бұрын
butterfly kicks off behind, and can land in any spin position. flying camel involves a jump, change in foot, and ends in a back camel

Someone at my rink told me how much they loved your videos and he was right. They’re so very helpful. That said, the rink I skate at is extremely busy and I could never attempt these without looking backwards. How would you modify your technique when looking backwards. Is it the simple addition of a head turn, or is there more to it? It seems like a lot of twisting back and forth to see back there. If the answer is difficult to address in a comment then perhaps could you consider doing a follow up video? Thank you for your content. Love the way you break things down. Can’t wait to get into more of your videos.

great question! tricky to practice during a crowded session. I would try to follow the flow of traffic and look back over your shoulder after every few pulls. or try to prioritize working on these during a lesson so the coach can also help look out for traffic. I think making a video on how to navigate a busy session is a great idea - thank you for your question!
