Kazan was also worth mentioning in Russia. It’s a big and beautiful city. Also Ufa, Rostov-on-Don, Voronezh and Krasnodar are pretty nice. They have a little over 1 mln inhabitants.

I missed Valletta when I tried this -_- I will not forgive myself for forgetting a whole country. Anyway, I went on a completely different strategy to get as many on the board as I good. I started with my home country, the Netherlands, and in the end I got 127 cities and towns here and I overall did slightly worse in all other countries apart from Germany (2 more) than you did. I ended on a respectable 414. Notable misses in Germany were Köln and Essen. I swear I had typed those already. And I missed Russian and Ukrainian cities (not that strange).

Most populous cities missed: Voronezh Russia (1,054,537) , Saratov Russia (863,725), Zaporizhia Ukraine (796,217), Tol’yatti Russia (702,879), Kryvyi Rih Ukraine (652,380), Krasnodar Russia (649,851), Ulyanovsk Russia (640,680), Chisinau Moldova (635,994) (couldn't spell it in English, was sure it was 'sh' instead of 's', because the 'ch' threw me off.) Guess I need to brush up on my Russian cities. I was also surpsingly bad at French cities. Many have trickly spellings so even if you are roughly familiar with them you're still stuck unless you know exactly how they are spelled. My biggest face-palm misses are: Rotterdam, Bremen, Stuttgart, Hannover, Leicester, Valetta and Vatican City (totally forgot it was counted as a separate city)
