The 2021 FIDE World Cup is a 206-player knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana, near Sochi, Russia from July 12 to August 6. The prize fund is almost $1.9m, with $110,000 for the winner, while the finalists also qualify for the 2022 Candidates Tournament. The top 50 players, who include world nos 1 and 2 Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, are seeded directly into Round 2.
Each match consists of two classical games where the players have 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment from move 1. If tied, a playoff will be held on the 3rd day. There are two 25+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 10+10 games, then two 5+3, and finally an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed until after move 30. Official website: worldcup.fide.com

For those of you who don't know, the quote "a knight is a knight" comes from none other than Mikhail Tal, who said "Fischer is Fischer, but a knight is a knight" in response to Bobby Fischer saying he wanted to play the Women's World #1 and would win even when giving her knight odds.

Fantastic! I thought it was another grand master, namely Chuck Norris. Or was it Bruce Lee? I was not sure. But now I know. Just kidding. Yes, now when you mentioned it, I remember I read it somewhere. Bobby was always such a modest guy. That's why Russians loved him so much!

@@ChessJourneyman Fisher was undoubtedly better than the player he was referring to, Nona Gaprindashvili. Probably a 300-400 point rating gap. But she was a very strong player, obviously, and Fischer is Fischer, but a knight is a knight.

Power comes in response to a need not a desire. If one thinks deeply that quote is so fascinating.

Duda's immortal, probably. Great attacking style of his, too. I don't think he gets enough credit.

What's the difference between a King *Hunt* and a King _March_ ? The presence of his enemy's attacking pieces

Funny that's a Goku quote, as he himself becomes stronger a lot because of his desire to get stronger.

Yeah true, but I guess his true power ups come when he needs to protect someone (even in DBS).

What're you even talking about ? Every transformation was when he needed to become stronger or the world was gonna be destroyed or his friends were all going to die. Frieza (ss1) Majin Vegta (ss2) Ss3( majin buu) Ss4 (syn shenron) God/blue ( beerus) Ultra instinct ( jiren) Ofcourse he practiced everyday to get stronger but he really became stronger when he really needed to be in the end

After bishop captures on g2 and king takes, there's queen g3 to block the qg5 check. And the white queen defends the knight on e5
