Compares two ways to tie shoes - “one loop” versus “two loop” methods (or “bunny rabbit” versus “bunny ears” methods) - to settle once and for all that neither is inferior and neither should be considered the “kiddies” version.

As a little kid, my parents ried to teach me the "one loop" version, but it never worked for me, so I "made up" my own version. I'm 25, and have been using it all my life, and just today I learned that it's the inferior granny knot haha.

Great that you managed to teach yourself, though it's a shame that you fluked the wrong side of the 50:50 odds and ended up with your knot always coming loose. Hopefully you're now set with an amended method.

@@ProfShoelace I always double knot my laces, because they don't stay tied very well if I don't. I just thought that was normal! I guess now it's time to teach myself to flip it the other way when I loop.

Then there will be no more double knotting, no more untying when you *don't* want plus easier untying when you *do* want. Good luck!

Well as a 23 year old, I have finally learned the one loop knot and how to not make a granny knot (which I have being doing all my life) Thank you so much, you've made it very easy to understand. Wish I knew you when I was trying to tie my shoes for the first time Lol.

I'm happy to have helped you to tie your shoes correctly. Defeating the “Granny Knot” will be life-changing for you! By the way, my website *was* around in 2003 when you would have reached shoe-tying age, although the videos I had back then were much less detailed.

You can also do the one loop technique without the starting knot. Just start the loop at the starting knot. Sloughs this method tends to loosen relatively quickly.
@ProfShoelace
@ProfShoelace 5 жыл бұрын
That's yet another variation. It does create a different knot, which - as you noticed - does not remain secure.

Professor ! why the binding on the Two Loop node was different than in the video showing how to tie on two loops
@ProfShoelace
@ProfShoelace 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, you're quite right! In fact, you can feed *either* loop through the middle, but I probably should have taken more care to be consistent. I've probably made my “Two Loop Knot” video wrongly because it uses the reverse of my website's instructions.

@@ProfShoelace if I tie my shoes like in the movie "Two Loop Knot", it ties correctly ?
@ProfShoelace
@ProfShoelace 4 жыл бұрын
That's correct. So long as the two loops are *crossed* the correct way, either loop can be fed through the hole in the middle and the shoe will be correctly tied.

It seems that with the one loop version I can't hold the tension and so it's not as tight
@ProfShoelace
@ProfShoelace Жыл бұрын
It's usually the case that whichever knot you're *not* used to will end up being tied more loosely. Because I'm well practiced in *both* methods, they each end up tight.

If you pass *both* loops through the center - one from the front, one from the back - you'll be tying “Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot”. It's a simple extra step that forms a *much* better knot.

Not sure if you still can - unless you raid my archives! They came from Braidex, a manufacturer here in Melbourne, Australia - who closed down maybe 15 years ago (thanks to cheaper imports). They were made for Aussie brand Waproo. Otherwise, search for 5mm round shoelaces in royal blue

So a one loop is better only if tied left to right
@ProfShoelace
@ProfShoelace 5 жыл бұрын
The One Loop Knot is no better or worse than the Two Loop Knot - provided that each of them is tied correctly. I was hoping to show that the Two Loop Knot is commonly tied wrongly as a Granny Knot - but the One Loop Knot can also be tied wrongly. My Granny Knot video "Why Shoelaces Come Undone" delves into this in more detail:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbyRhpmF3OCwk2w.html

Professor ! Are you LEFT handed ? You make it opossite I do, and I`m lost.
@ProfShoelace
@ProfShoelace 5 жыл бұрын
No, I'm not left handed. But the fact that we are reversed highlights how complicated this is. It's impossible in a 3-minute-long video to show *every* possible way that people tie shoelaces. Even the basic "Starting Knot" can be tied four different ways: 1. Left end over right end, then wrap around back and through; 2. Left end under right end, then wrap around front and through; 3. Right end over left end, then wrap around back and through; 4. Right end under left end, then wrap around front and through. My point was simply to show that the "One Loop Shoelace Knot" and "Two Loop Shoelace Knot" are equivalent.
