This video shows me and my Daughter, Tia, pouring and finishing a concrete slab floor for a greenhouse.
Teaching the skills of concrete pouring and finishing is what I do to all my employees.
The more skills they have, the easier it makes everyone's job.
I teach how to work with concrete in my membership area The Concrete Underground.
Pouring, screeding, bull floating, mag floating, steel troweling and sawing concrete are the kinds of things you'll see in this video.
Concrete pouring and finishing techniques are done a little differently depending on who's teaching you. I like to teach the skills I have learned from people before me and the skills I have acquired from doing this for 40 years.

It's refreshing to see a young lady such as Tia giving the whole concreting trade a go hard go...it's a testament not only to her and her work ethic (she's doing a damn fine job), but also to the ethics instilled by both yourself and her mother...so many teens and young adults today seem to be allergic to any form of labourious work...if it involves them lifting a finger from either a controller or keyboard...and heaven forbid breaking a sweat...it's almost like asking them to donate a kidney. Great work Mike...and great work Tia...have watched many videos of yours, and you never ever see her shy away from doing any of the works from pouring, pushing, magging, bull floating and edging...like I said, very refreshing to see!!!! I laid my 10' × 12' shed floor with the help of one man (who helped barrow the concrete, and then screed it). Took two days (working part time) to form up the slab and get it square. One foot footings around the side, and 4 inch slab in the middle. I've never done concreting before, so took my time to get everything set up. On pour day, the driver was brilliant. Knowing that this was my first pour, he first checked to make sure that the form work as ready and fit for purpose (and commented that I had the forms exactly square) and then wet down the concrete slightly to give us more time to spread and screed it. He even showed me how to get a good finish with my trowel. 23 years later, the floor is still good, with minimal cracking. It was only a small shed floor, but I'm still proud of what we achieved.

Thanks for the video. I had my daughter help me doing jobs around the house, she also went to work with me. I am retired plumber so she got to see most of the trades. She has never not had a job, worked through the pandemic, not afraid of anything, and has a great job at costco and heading to manager. Great job dad! and the concrete too.

Great pour..It's always great to have a two person team no matter the job size. My high school buddy helps me all the time. I always ask help from my sister during the week since she is a stay at home mom and she only lives like 6 blocks from me and i pickup her up on the way to work. My brother also helps me on the weekends if it's a big job. My sister usually does the washing of the equipment, picks up forms, stakes, hand tools, goes into town and buys our lunch etc. That saves alot of time for us.

Pretty sure those black columns are "Thermal" vents allowing year round 55ish degree ground temp to help warm the building in winter temps. Not 100% sure but I said it anyway🤷‍

Exactly what I'm thinking. Especailly being in a colder environment, and not having any posts for a heater. Being that they put a drain in the center, it seems like they thought this out and aren't doing the standard plain floor greenhouse. Then again, I come from professional greenhouse environment, so everything is a little different than something this small.

I saw someone comment on one of your videos saying you need to eat something. One thing I’ve learned is if you’re doing concrete work like this by yourself a lot at times , it’s good to be lightweight healthy. Have plenty of cardio. IMO cardio is is important for this type of work, especially summer time! You look great mike and work looks great also! Thanks for the free lessons on here !

The only problem with magged pads is knowing if they are flat I’m a union finisher and we always mag it but then pull pads off the wall or we pas the screed side to side to make sure it’s flat, not saying u do it wrong ur a pro and I love the channel and what it stands for learned a lot from u keep up the good work brother

Hey Mike been working with my father for 15 year before I came long it was him and one guy for 20 years, our scope of work has grown a bit but we still only run a four man crew most days. When a floor is big enough the laser screed comes out we hire a few other small finish crews for the day. I enjoy jobs like you did in the video on my own you get to make it exactly as you like.

I've seen greenhouses that have corrugated pipes running underground that they pump air through and it basically thermal regulates it and they don't need to worry about heating/cooling systems, just a fan to move the air through the pipes. Since the ground at a certain depth maintains a constant temperature, it works.

Your daughter is a very competent worker. I employ 2 guys in New Zealand, doing mainly driveways. There aren’t many female concrete workers here, but I can honestly say that the couple who have helped me over the years were awesome, they put some of the guys to shame

Your biggest help was the fact that you poured about a 6-7 slump so it lays down easy and caps with lots of cream. All the rocks sink so you aren't fighting them at the surface. You said you always pour with fiber mesh and water reducer so that allows for a wet lay down and easy work. Nice!

The big tubes are probably connected to a buried tube, for a heat pump. Throw a fan pushing air inside one, and 55 degree air will blow out the other big tube. they need to be big to allow enough airflow to keep the whole greenhouse warm.

I am not sure if it was commented in the previous 174 but the tubes are more than likely for a climate battery. Basically during hot times they will pump heat down in the ground and it will cool the air on exit. Then during winter they can pump cold air down to warm up on exit. Basically a geothermal battery using air and ground mass to regulate temperatures

Thanks for showing these videos. I'm mulling over the possibility of pouring a 10x12 slab in my back yard to build a shed from scratch.. and install a small dry sauna in that too. But I'd have to get something like a mixer and just do it bag by bag. Don't want to have to hire a pumper truck to carry it over the house and into the yard. I'm in a neighborhood with starter homes and smaller yards. Anyway, your videos are starting to give me a much better idea of what I'm in for if I move forward... thank you.

vertical culverts may be for some type of earth cooling or heating via air movement, or they are for frost protected hydrants, i have seen both.

If you don’t have to worry about blowing forms out I like to have the teamster spin the truck fast without overflowing the chute to get them far reaching corners. Little less pulling! Good tool to learn as chute man and laborers always thank you in the end :)

You've got as really decent truck driver there, waiting for dad and daughter to do that job. Usually truck drivers will be pointing to their watch moaning about how long the job is taking.

I like to spend bit more time on the straight edge and cut bit tighter on drain. That big mag looks like hard work .

many people who build green houses use thermal to keep temp inside from freezing and overheating . by running pipes more than 6 foot deep under the ground then pushing the air through with a basic fan ventilation system , saving money from heaters & A/C

Hi Mike. I’m a former tile setter, so I’m good with a trowel. I’ve been prepping a walkway in front of my house between the newly repaved driveway and the grass. From the sidewalk 30 feet down it starts about 4 feet wide and eventually curves out to meet the 10 foot wide concrete steps I poured in 2015. I’ll have my 26 year old step son help me out. I still have to saw cut the the driveway edge. Not sure if I should edge finish the concrete where it meets the driveway. The total size of the job is about 170 square feet. It will be the height of the driveway and slope about an inch down to the grass on the opposite side. It will be about 50 degrees when I pour next week. Love your videos, very helpful.

My guess with the plastic culverts is that he's bringing in air to condition the building (run underground to bring temperatures down in summer and up in winter.)

This is super helpful. Considering pouring my own garage slab and hand trowel finishing it. Either 12x24 and then another 8x24 beside it later on or maybe the full 20x24 at once.

I have been watching a few of your videos Mike. I am a retired carpenter who has done quite a few concrete jobs and the one thing we always paid attention to was never step on the mesh or rebar after it was pulled up when placing concrete. I noticed here your stepping on the mesh after you lifted it with your pour. Most of your mesh is still at the bottom.Sorry, but this is my pet peeve on concrete placing.

In the video, Mike says he pulls up the mesh/rebar to allow rocks in the concrete mix to settle to the bottom. Apparently, you can tell when the mask/rebar is sitting on rocks, and that's how you know it's raised.

I do all the set up myself but like to get help from at least one person when I pour for placing mud and screeding it. Mainly shed pads and patios usually around 400 sq ft. Always have to buggy mud in but the company I use for concrete offers a buggy rental with operator for about $60 more than just getting the buggy alone so Its like having an extra guy, plus I don't have to pick up/clean/return the buggy because the operator brings it and takes it back.
