I'm glad Rachel mentioned the situation in japan regarding adopting vs buying cats. It was SO HARD for us to find adoptable cats in japan, because all the locals we asked would just suggest we go to the pet store and buy one. Shelters never seemed to cross their minds. :( And buying a kitten at a pet store easily cost $1000 or more. I think it was actually a website mentioned on this channel years and years ago that eventually led us to our cats. The group who was taking care of them, as far as I could tell, was really informal and 100% volunteer. I'm eternally grateful to those people, but I do wish Japan as a whole had better systems (and social attitudes!) for pet adoption.

The us has had many years of "adopt don't shop" kind of advertising that I think japan could benefit from a bit of tbh. Most people who love animals will adopt when they know there are options to do so.

This happens almost everywhere in the world and it sucks. My heart breaks when I see an animal on the streets and I know I can't adopt them and nobody wants them. I think we need to have universal law with a great punishment that won't allow people to sell animals.

Kind of makes you wonder what they think a shelter is for... Wish they could do commercials like here in America. The ASPCA "In the Arms of the Angel" commercial was a massive hit, both with donations and adoptions. Japan needs a punch to the gut advertisement like that, lol.

Deo Volente I don’t think a law like that is the solution. It’s not going to make the industry disappear, all it will do is force it into the underground/black market like the exotic pet trade. I think a better solution is to educate the public on pet adoption. Right now there’s more status in buying a pedigree pet from a breeder, if we change public perception so that there’s status in adopting and shame in buying, it will change the tides just as it has done in the west

Agreed, I'm sure she was dumped. I had a cat once as a kid who I found that'd been declawed, I found out later from a neighbor that he'd seen someone throw her out the back of their truck while driving down the highway. She had a huge scar on her back, and was really scared at first. People who dump animals like that should have to live in a dog shelter cage for the rest of their lives.

I dont think so. I have adopted a 5 year old feral cat that has lived his prior life in a barn with other cats and he was acting the exact same as her. He took a whole month to be comfortable leaving his little space and roam free, and now he is doing absolutely wonderful and LOVES pets. He will come up to you, stare at you and yell for pets, if you do not comply, he will paw at you and loaf on whatever you are doing (work/laptop/keyboard)

It's completely possible, just unlikely. I work with an animal rescue and meet sweet ferals all the time, and personally have had 3 ferals that have been extremely human-friendly. My second boy (God rest him, died at 4 years old due to dental cancer that accelerated way too quickly because of his Feline AIDs) was probably the biggest anomaly. While he was outside he swatted at me and I thought he was being aggressive but later I learned he was just pulling your hand to his head to be pet! I actually brought him inside by picking him up and putting him inside my winter coat when it was freezing and snow was 5 inches deep outside. Our current former-feral is friends with anyone, and often gets into trouble when he escapes and tries to make friends with other feral cats and outside dogs. I'm really not sure if it's just their natural temperament or the amount of time they spend with humans, but it's fully possible for feral cats to be friendly to humans and other animals and I see it fairly often!

It's a common misconception that ferals don't know how to use the litter box. All cats have an instinctual need to cover their wastes (exception with non-neutered males, illness and some behaviour issues), even young kittens separated from their mom at birth will do it unprompted. But yes, she was probably lost or dumped at a young age, because adult cats that have never know humans are very unlikely to ever socialize to humans, and especially not this fast. Some ferals will become friendly after they are spayed thought, but it's not very common.
@maximumvio1et677

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Her trust issues don't seem to stem from not knowing humans, but from knowing them and being burned by them. She doesn't attack, and she let Rachel keep trying to help her even after the first cage attempt failed.

coffinbaby ive been doing this for years, I’m talking about the teeny tiny kittens that are 2-4 weeks old. Of course I’d never do it with an older one. I put the kittens in my lap and put a blanket around them so they feel safe and I feed them wet food. Then they associate me with food. It all depends on the personality of the cat, ive rarely had to do this and only for a few days before the kitten trusts me. And some times it doesn’t matter if the cat doesn’t like it, if I have to give it medicine and it won’t stay still it’s getting rolled up in that blanket no matter what.
@OmqSparklez
@OmqSparklez 3 жыл бұрын
@@BullyGirlUzi Socialisation is a spectrum, but a cat being unowned does not mean it's feral, a cat being aggressive does not mean it's feral, a cat being shy or lacking confidence does not mean it's feral. I took in a 4 year old cat off the streets, she's the most loving, amazing, snuggly cat, though she has behavioural issues (now 4 years on) leftover from her time before me and though she's very anxious about trusting people besides me, she's so friendly. This is because she is not and never was feral. I've also taken in a largely unsocialised ~9 month old cat, due to extenuating circumstances that required him to be homed inside rather than left in his colony. He acted exactly as you would expect a feral cat to. He was past the socialisation window, but as a colony cat, he knew people, he knew that people meant food and safety, he just didn't understand what being an indoor cat was like. Truly feral cats are always better in colonies, but he couldn't be, and thus, we made things work. Eventually he, through patience and space, became more socialised, but still is anxious, lacks confidence, and has other leftover problems that pretty much any late-socialised cat will. Your cat probably had a similar level of socialisation to the latter. This is what decides whether a cat can be socialised. Not their personality, not some mystical level of inherent socialisation, just the experiences they had before you got them.

They can do whatever they want and it's not your business to say that. They have different things that make them happy. Sheesh

"you just gotta let a cat be whatever kinda cat it wants to be." i second this so much!! my mom thinks my cat is bipolar but she's just hyper, energetic, and gets overstimulated easily when pet. i started noticing that when she was around 6 months old or so, and by the time she was a year old i realized it wasn't just kitten energy that would fade, and that this is just who she is. i wanted a cuddly lap cat, but i also wanted other things that she wasn't either (male silver tabby is what i'd always wanted, but she's a regular tabby). i often say she's not what i wanted, but she's what i needed. i've accepted that she's crazy, she's hyper, and she won't cuddle or tolerate being pet much. i've also learned how she shows love, though - we wink/blink at each other a good deal, she brings me toys when she wants to play, and she loves to be right up in whatever i'm doing. i love her too much to not accept her as she is, and dropping her off in a shelter is something i physically couldn't do. she's my child, in every sense pretty much, and a mother doesn't abandon her kid just because they aren't who she wanted them to be. besides, she's named after freddie mercury, so i kind of brought this on myself. but hey, at least she's fabulous!

If more people thought this way, both kids and pets would be better off. I get extremely upset for children or animals with behavioral, physical or mental problems; it’s not their fault they exist or have these issues and they have little to no control over their conditions. In Siamese cats, the gene that causes their coat color also effects their eye-brain connection because that gene codes for tyrosinase, which is both involved in the synthesis of melanin (that gives fur and skin darker coloring) and the development of the optic chiasm (the connection between the brain and the eyes).

Yup. I had a Siamese cat who was given up for adoption by a breeder when he was a kitten - he had a fall and lost an eye, the breeder paid for the vet fees but wouldn't take him back. And my current cat (got her as a kitten) got left with her sisters outside the shelter right after Christmas, probably because whoever owned her couldn't sell her... Some people are just awful. But here in the UK at least there's a really strong focus on pet adoption so there's plenty of people out there who are happy to take those cats! Which I think is very heartening.

@@clarakoenig7923 Just to not make things as bleak as they sometimes are, a small ray of light in regards to people who leave cats outside, it could very well be the case that their shelter was full or that they simply didn't have the ability to care for the kittens and were hoping that someone would find them. If I was in a desperate situation, I'd do my best to make sure the box was weather proof as possible, breathable, put some food I could spare inside and put them in a warm safe spot that was still obvious for people to see if I had no ability to feed them long term and my shelter couldn't take anymore. I think there are people who feel they have no choice and are doing what little they can and people who are just assholes who don't view animal life the same as any other life. But over all, given the situation Pichi was probably in, yeah, I would say her owner thought she was defective and abandoned her at best.

Lived in an apartment complex once where I met a very friendly black kitten. I was a kid back then and my brothers had wanted me to play tag with them. I hated being outside (the Louisiana humidity was awful) but I went out anyways. When I first walked outside, I saw the kitten who ducked under the cars in the parking lot. I wanted to call it to me but we were playing the game and we weren't allowed to have pets anyways. Very early the next morning, I don't know why but I got up while it was still dark to see if the kitten was there. It actually was! More impressive was that it indeed came to me when I clicked my teeth to call it. I fed it some lunch meat and I think I snuck it in my bedroom for a bit. I let it out from my bedroom window, but this also meant that when it returned on other nights, it knew to go to my window. Somehow, the landlord saw me (he lived at the front of the apartment complex) and came over to ask my mom about the cat. She knew nothing and when she asked me, naturally I denied everything. But after that, I never saw that kitten again. A rumor went around that he Old Yeller'd the cat, but I don't believe that. A gunshot would've been way too noticable and everyone would've been on the same page about having heard something like that. I'd like to think he instead took them ("them", because there were actually several kittens. A previous tenant just released them I suppose when the cat they snuck and owned had kittens) to a shelter or found a home for them. I don't think he was heartless enough to kill the kittens.

I rescued a kitten myself. He was scared of me a lot during my first day, but at night he was crying, so I went and carefully carried and held him. He latched on with his claws and his his face in my shoulder and neck. And taking I've been holding him and feeding him and giving him attention. He will now cry to get my attention or shutter at me. He will wake me up in the morning licking my face and chattering. He climbs only my leg and should when I get home from work. He misses me when I'm at work. He is a sweet boy, who I named Michio, still have bad habits of attacking hands, jumping into shoulders with claws out, but lately he's been mainly licking and nipping lightly, which I prefer he does and prefer it when playing. My 3 year old rescue cat is still not completely comfortable being held and touched, although we got him when he was really small! When he eats we can touch him anywhere, but when he is not we can't touch his belly, paws, or legs. If we do he starts hitting us with his paw. He is absolutely in love with our dog, pushes his head against our dog constantly and expects to be licked. Overall he is really comfortable in our home, he lays on his side a lot, does want attention and asks for it, but has very stict limits for touching him. Overall very confusing, but we love him anyways! lol

When my girly was still with us, we'd had her for about three years I think? And she was just starting to be willing to stand on us and be held. She was an indoor cat her whole life, had never been outside for any significant time. And even as she was warming up it was definitely at a different pace for everyone. She was more likely to stand on or sit by me, but was very happy to be held by my brother. My mom mostly was pets, and my sister was only tolerated for pets. She never really bit the kid, but tbh she should've. My sister was a brat to her, lol

The Name Pitchi reminded me immediately of a book I really loved as a kid. It is called Pitschi (Autor: Hans Fischer). The story of the book goes like this: Pitschi is the smallest and finest of old Lisette's five kittens. Pitschi is different from his siblings; it runs away and wants to be a rooster, then a goat, a duck, a hare until it is finally scared to death in the dark rabbit hutch when the eagle owl and the fox come ominously close. Fortunately, old Lisette finds the kitten and takes it home. The next day Pitschi is ill, but not for long, because the kitten is pampered and cared for by everyone and can soon celebrate a party with the other animals. Pitschi realizes that being a kitten is the best.

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever heard about adopting cats is not to be upset if you don't get the cat you were expecting. They have their own affection limits and personalities and it's not fair to force them to be something they don't want to be. Excellent job you're doing with Pichi!

That's what happen when people choose a cat by the look, or a kittens only a few days old. A kitten should never be put up for adoption before 2 months old, and people should stop choosing their cats solely based on the cute factor. I'm a foster and a rescuer and I can assure you this is what happens 99% of the time, often with sad consequences. Cats have personalities, flaws, needs. If people don't want a bad surprise, and continue to spread the misconception that cats are a*holes who do what they want, they should choose a cat based on personality and compatibility with their home.

@@aletheiamccarthy6851 I agree, but in my experience people will choose cats based on their looks mostly, my family also does this, so it's also just about being prepared for the fact that cats are all individuals. My dad really wanted a black female cat around 12 years ago, we adopted a very shy slim kitty (3-4 months old) from a local farm. once we arrived home, we quickly found out this cat was claustrophobic, didn't like to be touched, and also male (not sure how we missed that). It's probably pure luck that in our house it was no problem to let him venture outside freely. And even tho he pisses up our walls in spite of being neutered and he scratches you when he doesn't want to get petted, I love this cat a lot. But in case of people who are expecting a sweet ball of fluff to cuddle with all day, ye that wasn't what happened, and someone not prepared would probably have gotten rid of this kind of cat... Long story short: don't pick your cat based on looks only and if you do, be prepared for any unexpected surprises :')

Edit3: It's back. 😭 I'm sorry to everyone who couldn't watch during these ~40 min. Very disappointed this happened but at least it's okay now! (Detailed info: Reached out to KZfaq several ways--managed to reach someone through the "live chat" help section. They didn't really say anything or seem to know what was happening. I googled the issue myself in the meantime and it seems like other people said this happened to them when they used the blur tool in KZfaq's editor, which I used. Can't confirm it but my suspicion is that the final portion of KZfaq's re-processing the video after the blur tool edit is what caused it to go unavailable for everyone. This theory is supported by the fact that when the video came back, it was only available in 360p resolution first, and also my editor page no longer said it was processing. KZfaq has had live editing tools for years now, where you can roughly trim things/blur/do a couple basic things and while I've used it to blur out things in the past I don't recall the video ever actually becoming totally unavailable during the process. It's not supposed to. But I guess sometimes these things just happen! But anyway, long story short: be warned if you need to use KZfaq's blur tool!!) Edit2: Not sure why it's suddenly saying it's "unavailable on this device"! It's showing that for me, too. This has never happened to us before. Trying to see if KZfaq can help! Edit: Done. AHHH I can’t believe I forgot the Japanese subtitles!! The vet basically said she’s much calmer than she was last time, and she’s made a ton of progress in such a short period of time so he thinks she’ll get used to living with people! That was an important part lol SORRY! I’ll get the subtitles up ASAP! A few people commented about there being no subtitles but my brilliant brain legit thought they were talking about not having ENGLISH SUBTITLES. (Sometimes people ask for them). Excuse me, I'm a little bit daft today lmao.

Passing this along - Two things that really help socialize strays more quickly is what I call 'speaking without speaking' - sort of a humming that you do in a gentle and soft speaking cadence. You both have good voices for this. The other approach is an established technique called The Tellington Touch, a series of tactile tornadoes in a pattern of 1 3/4 circles with fingertips only. These can be done singly or in a continuous series and works most successfully in cats along the skull and spine at first. The sign that you're doing it correctly is when the animal sighs and visibly relaxes. Little Pichi appears unlikely to have ever had the luxury of letting her guard down. I cannot think of a better home for Pichi than with you. Sending you positive energy and much love with hopes for the future for your beautiful, fuzzy family.

I foster feral kittens and with my limited expertise, she isn't feral. It's extremely difficult to socialize feral kittens after they turn 9-10 weeks, and adults are near impossible. There is a reason that most rescues will spay and release kittens after 10 weeks and barely attempt to socialize adults. People don't realize that kittens are born feral, and are socialized by their parents to trust humans or humans themselves. The fact she didn't start growling and swiping at you at the beginning and has already allowed you to pet her makes me think she was once owned or at least raised by humans. She's probably been on the streets for awhile. Our last foster kittens were 8 weeks old and took two weeks to reach this stage, and another week for one of them to approach us for pets (the other never fully trusted us before adoption). The fact you have made this much progress in a month is great. My next tips would be to introduce play, as well as getting her to climb on your lap while she eats (make it so she has to climb over you to get the food). Chicken baby food is also a godsend for socializing cats too. It's like kitten crack. Lastly, she will probably start to make much greater process when introduced to other cats. They learn from each other and when she sees all three of your other kitties coming up for pets, she will start associating pets = good.

Awww, poor baby. We have a young black cat named Orion, she was born to a feral mom and my family caught her with the intent to spay and release her, but we caught her late in the season. When she was spayed and her stomach shaved, her fur took a really long time to grow back and we worried about letting her out in the cold. We tried socializing her since she was still young, less than six months but older than four, and we only had mild success. The surprising thing is as we started introducing her to our cats, she blossomed! We didn't let them touch each other (we had her in a large crate and supervised at all times to ensure her safety and our cats), but when she first laid eyes on our youngest cat she started purring loudly and rubbing on the door of the crate. He didn't know what to make of her but she was so happy to see him. When we got the all clear from the vet on her health we let them meet, and she got along with him in a way we couldn't have imagined, now we joke that they're married. She's still skittish about being touched, most of the time she rejects affection if she's not eating, but she'll jump up on the couch with us to beg for any food we eat, she plays in our presence, and she's fully adjusted to life indoors.

Happy Birthday!! I’m sorry your family forgot. That’s happened to me before, too, so I understand where you’re coming from!

Happy Birthday and best wishes! My hubby will forget my birthday and our anniversary sometime over 28 years of marriage. He is saved many times over because he has been reminded by our son who forgets nothing. Hubby will jokingly say thank goodness that our son takes after me instead of himself.

I love seeing former feral animals getting better with humans. It's so lovely to see when they start trusting people enough to let them touch them.
