As time has gone I've learned to recognize the signs to expect for pregnant sheep. And my ewes are exhibiting ALL of them.
1) Increased size (especially obvious when they are walking away from you or laying down)
2) Their udders form (my ewes don't have full bags yet, but I can tell that they are beginning to form udders, which is a good sign considering how far out they are)
3) They just act strange (my ewes are a bit more skittish around me as their pregnancies have progressed)
4) The female parts on the backside turn pink, widen, and become floppy (my ewes started exhibiting this about two weeks ago)

ABOUT THE HIGH MOUNTAIN HOMESTEAD
Hi! I’m PJ, and my family loves the homesteading life! It’s something my wife and I have always wanted to do, but we grew up with ZERO HOMESTEADING EXPERIENCE!!!!!
We grew up in beautiful southern California, 15 minutes away from the beach. As amazing as that was, we both dreamed of a life closer to land and animals. After getting married and moving to Utah, our family slowly grew. We had become a family of four living in a townhome with a small backyard filled with potted plants.
In 2019 we dipped out feet into homesteading on 1 ¼ acre lot in Utah. In 18 months we were ready to do this for real. So in 2021 we packed everything up (including our sheep) and moved to North Carolina to 12 acres and we love every inch of our homestead!
We raise Dorper sheep and have big plans for:
• grass-fed lamb
• fullblood Dorper breeding stock
• meat chickens
• laying chickens and ducks
• heritage breed pork
• honey
• row crops
• perennial food forest
• and more
I hope you join us on our journey, subscribe and ring the bell if you haven’t yet.

Glad to have you along Zona! Sounds like you're doing things very similar to me. This is my first experience with this kind of thing, but so far so good.

We have about 5 ewes expecting in the next 4-5 weeks. Great tips and I can always pick out some if the things you mentioned. Have had one lamb born already but that mom surprised us and gave birth quicker than expected. Total surprise. New subscriber and looking forward to following along!

@@homesteadingwithPJ it did. The ewe had pregnant toxemia and we caught her in time to nurse her back to health and for her to give birth. She ended up having twins but one didn't' make it. Have you had to deal with toxemia before?

@@SheratonParkFarms Luckily no, these two ewes are my first mothers in my flock. Is it mostly diet related? Obviously if they are carrying twins or triplets that increases the likelihood.

Our first time ewes seem to take longer to "bag" up than our mature ewes. This was very good.

That's REALLY good to know! Because it seemed like it was longer for my ewes last year (all of which were first time moms).

Subscribed bud. And thank you for your advice so far. Question - do you get predators there? We get a lot of foxes so I put the ewe and her lamb in cage 3x4 meter. When is a lamb big enough to ward off predators? Love your content champion, thanks again.

How soon do you start counting once you expose them to the ram?? Trying to see when I should expect babies.
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ Жыл бұрын
I find that a ram should have 6 weeks with ewes. AndI find that usually 5 months after I remove the ram is when I can expect sheep. They usually don't breed immediately. At least, mine don't. I've heard the really big operations will move rams really far away from the ewes all year, and then put in a weather (casterated ram) to get the ewes to all "cycle up" at the same time. Then throw in the stud rams.

I bought these with docked tails. Since this is a registered flock, I try to sell as many as I can for breeding stock. And they are often overlooked if they still have their tail.
