An NVR with dual NICs (network interface controllers) can be a handy device if you know how to use it to its fullest potential! In this video, we walk you through the three methods for setting up your dual NIC NVR: net fault-tolerance (redundancy), load balance, and multi-address. Each of these methods have their pros and cons, depending on your situation. But 9 times out of 10, we recommend setting up your dual NIC NVR with a multi-address configuration. Here's a brief summary of the three methods.
NET FAULT-TOLERANCE
This allows you to set your NVR up with redundancy. By this, we mean you can set your NVR up on the same network twice. This is helpful, because if one of your ports were to stop working, you'd still have a solid connection with the other port.
LOAD BALANCE
Like Net Fault-Tolerance, Load Balance also has both NVR ports connected to the same network. The difference is, instead of redundancy, each port is balancing the load of the cameras to improve overall performance. If one NIC happened to stop working, you would lose about half your cameras, because in this scenario, both network ports are doing different things.
MULTI-ADDRESS
This is the most flexible method of setting up your dual NIC NVR. In this setup, your NVR's ports are set up on two different gateways. The first port is connected to your main network, while your second port is connected to a secondary switch. For this to work, the second port needs to have a separate gateway. This is an excellent way to get some or all of your cameras off of your main network and onto a secondary network, where it won't interfere with your bandwidth on your main network.
Which is your favorite method? Let us know in the comments below!

Thanks for the video. I had a job of 26 cameras over the weekend and for the first time I was using a NVR similar to yours but I didn't understand why I didn't had any ports in the nvr. Watched your video and made my life easier. Router to NVR #1 and NVR #2 to 32 POE Switch which was not on DHCP mode and had 192.168.3.200 so I made all cameras 192. 168.3.201 and so on.

This the only video all around internet that has a clear description on how to use the dual NICs, we have a dell poweredge for hosting our own website and applications, it has a dual nics hardware as well, and this video gives me the small step forward on understanding it. Thank you so much

Is that bandwidth capabilities of the nvr shared between the ports or does each port have the same capabilities? I’ve always wanted to use this as a second port on the same network.

My condition is NVR to POE switch then modem to POE switch. The NVR in one location and POE switch and modem in other location. So what’s the best way to setup. Thanks

Will adding the 2nd NIC to a different subnet create a bridge between the two or does the NVR safeguard against against that, our concern is safeguarding each subnet.
@xlrsecurity
@xlrsecurity Жыл бұрын
Both NIC cards are completely isolated from each other. They do not create a bridge, so you are safe to configure IoT devices on the 2nd NIC card using a different subnet.

As long as one of the NICs of the NVR is connected to the internet and the Hik-Connect P2P status in the NVR shows as Online, then you should be good!

Can i connect my PC to NIC 2 using Ethernet cable and access the cameras of nic 1 in my PC? If yes, then please tell me how to do that
@NellysSecurity
@NellysSecurity Жыл бұрын
you sure can! You'll just need to have the NIC2 and the PC be on the same IP range. Then you'll input the IP of the NVR into a web browser to access it.

hi I need to connect a wifi camera to my reolink NVR but i will need to pollace the camera in a remote area where the wifi signal is weak. If I add a network extender this will create a diofferent SSID and different network and therefore my camera will not connect to this network but what If i were to configure the wifi camnera then to the extended network this is not the network of the NVR and will not work just the same. so how can this problem be solved?

can i connect all cameras in 192.168.1.network in first nic card and all pc in to 192.168.2 network in second nic card, is it helpful to reduce the lagging when we access the camera through software, sir pls help me
@xlrsecurity
@xlrsecurity Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can connect the cameras on NIC 1 and network on NIC 2. It will help reduce lag in the network since you are reducing the amount of network traffic on the 192.168.2.x (internet) network.

I have a problem I have a nvr dahua 616-128 It has 4 network ports And I have two switchs All switches have cameras When connecting switchs to network ports that in nvr And I made a load balancer, the cameras disappear from one switch and the other works I made a connection from switch to switch and then to nvr
@NellysSecurity
@NellysSecurity 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately we are not familiar with that dahua model as we never carried it. Are the cameras on the same IP range as the NIC on the NVR? I would advise either reaching out to whoever you purchased the system from, Dahua, or even ipcamtalk.com. The guys over there are very knowledgeable.

Are you using managed or unmanaged switches? Never connect 2 switches together with a network cable, It sounds like both of your switches have the same IP address, allowing only one of them to talk to your nvr.

@joshbeasley21 you can connect with network port cable just has to be pinned out as a crossover cable.

Thanks @Nellys, I have ds7716nxi-i4/s with 2 network ports and currently the cameras and not working. I have changed the IP address put it prove abortive. The NVR always dictate the camera as network unreachable and am confused. This is my company in Dubai. Please I will appreciate if you can assist me on this task. Your explanation in this video is topnotch. Please if you have any means to assist me for the NVR to recognize the IP cameras, I will be grateful. Your video is clear and educative. Thanks @Nellys.
@NellysSecurity
@NellysSecurity Жыл бұрын
You'll need the IP cameras to be on the same Range as whichever dedicated NIC is satup with. For example, if NIC2 is the camera network and is on an IP of 192.168.254.1, then all the IP cameras will need to be on a 192.168.254.x IP. Then assigned to channels on the Hik NVR. If the cameras are not Hik, then you will need to use ONVIF and port 80. If you are still having trouble, I would check out ipcamtalk.com as the members over there can help you out as well!

Very interesting video, but I have a concern. If I use the Multi-addres setting, can I see all the cameras in the main network, in the second network? I don't want them to leave a part for a network, I want that even if they are in different networks, the same number of cameras can be seen in both networks.
@NellysSecurity
@NellysSecurity Жыл бұрын
Yes you can have the cameras still on the same network, but on different IP Ranges so they can be seen and not segregated on a separate POE switch.

@NellysSecurity

Hi! I'm not sure what you mean. Can you give me an example of what you're trying to accomplish?
@Co-SS
@Co-SS 2 жыл бұрын
you definitely want two networks. I do not want my cameras to be reachable by anything other than the nvr. I will not put a route on the main network pointing to the NVR for the network behind it. The cameras only talk to the NVR. I would even put a bad gw on dhcp for backend network so none of the cameras can get to the internet. this way cams are still plug and play but they cannot get to the internet. manually update your cams if needed.

I will use multi-address -In Lan 1, I will connect a cable to access the Internet. From NVR Settings I will set it to: NVR IP: 192 168 1 2 Subnet: 255 255 255 0 Gateway: 192 168 1 1 -In LAN 2, I will connect a cable to Poe Switch and from there to the cameras. From NVR Settings I will set it to: All my cameras will be on an IP range: 192 168 2 2 - 192 168 2 200 Subnet: 255 255 255 0 Gateway: 192 168 2 1 If I have a laptop or mobile phone at 192 168 1 12 how do I see a camera on 192 168 2 34 for example. *Will the "Virtual Host" feature of Hikvision NVR allow me to access the camera page?
