Would you try this one-of-a-kind Japanese grooming experience - a shave, and a vintage-style massage at Japan's only barbershop museum in Misasa?
Okay, I have to admit Kajikawa Barbershop has been on my list for a few years! 💈
Watch more of our videos from Japan👇🏼
• 💈 Dazzling Ducktail Ha...
Kajikawa Rihatsukan, founded in 1917, is a nostalgic journey back in time. A little off the regular tourist trail in the village of Misasa, Tottori, it serves as a living museum, preserving a rich barbershop history and culture for future generations.
Owner and 3rd generation barber, Kajikawa-san, is a bit of a kindred spirit! He has traveled all over Japan visiting old barbershops, photographing and documenting some of the stories of the shop owners as so many were permanently closing in the 80s and 90s with no successor.
“We always developed our economy by throwing old things away and searching for new things. As a result, cities became superficial places. I think it is a good thing to have modern shops, but it is also good to have shops rich in history.” -Mitsuru Kajikawa
Kajikawa-san grew up in and around this very same barbershop that his grandfather opened in 1917 before passing it down to his father. When he was younger, he aspired to become a painter 🎨 However, his dad was concerned about him making a living so he was encouraged to study barbering...
Nonetheless, Kajikawa-san quickly discovered barbering was a creative skill that bode well with him. No matter how much he learned, he felt there were always more skills and techniques yet to learn.
Inside the barbershop, antiques and memorabilia adorn every available space. From old photographs and vintage advertising to antique barber chairs and a collection of shaving plates and mugs.
Kajikawa-san enjoys meeting new people and LOVES sharing his collection with anyone stopping by the shop to take a look 💈❤️ He even uses a pointer as he shares his extensive knowledge!
One of the first items in the collection was a vintage shaving mug acquired in New York. Kajikawa-san also prides himself on being the original Japanese member of the National Shaving Mug Collectors Association (NSMCA) - USA! 🙌🏼
"Barbershops are fun places." Kajikawa-san explains, "Not just a place for a cut, but to spend time in. A place with an atmosphere like this, steeped in history, and also enjoy receiving a high standard of technique.”
Misasa is a popular hot springs destination for many Japanese tourists. Every morning you will find Kajikawa-san soaking up the medicinal benefits of the spring water. Kajikawa-san has been barbering for 50 years and told us he plans to keep working for at least another 30 years❣️

Just beware that a good majority of the people there are xenophobic. Not racist (unless you're another Asian) but they do not care for foreigners. They'll be nice in the bigger cities especially if you're buying something but the outskirts/countryside are a different story. Lived there for 2 years due to work, great place to visit just be ready.

It’s called a straight razor before we had the razors we have now ( 🪒 for reference in case someone needs further clarification ) we had these. They were essentially an incredibly sharp knife (when combined with the shaving cream) it could glide over the skin but still get the hair. Of course this implies that the user did this correctly.
