Millions of children dream of being the next Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, but the reality is that only a tiny percentage will ever make it pro in football.
Goal's One of a Number documentary tackles the hard questions around youth football, speaking to kids, teenagers, young adults, parents, coaches and experts across the UK to look beyond the surface of scouting talented players.
How are kids scouted by Premier League clubs? What happens to their emotional development when clubs discard boys and girls they don't want any more?
What measures are clubs and the PFA taking to help kids reach their dreams - and not be damaged psychologically by the system? One of a Number investigates at all that and much more.

Parents are so important and Mark Findlay has it spot on. As a parent make the decision for your child and then support them while the club take care of the football. Clubs do need to improve their attitude to players who aren’t performing or meeting perceived potential. Thought Dan Buck and Sonny Pike talked well and could probably help clubs and the premier league with their ideas!!!

Football is roller coaster of emotions harsh very harsh non of the parents or the kids are capable of dealing with it but for me is all about play with the smile and finish with the smile enjoy it 100% and keep your education first .

Even Alex Ferguson says football has to come before education and he would not keep a player who wanted to stay in school

I was driving around a small Midwest town today and it hit me just how unpopular soccer is here compared to say England. Here kids seem to do so many things. For girls, Cheerleading, gymnastics, dance, softball are all very popular. For boys it’s baseball, basketball, wrestling, hockey, and of course other stuff like video games, hunting, cars, etc etc. My kid does relatively a lot of soccer, but he’s in CA

I hope the family looking for a club find some peace and find another avenue to come together and find a way of enjoying football, that doesn't involve ongoing rejection.. Peace and love to all.

The guy at the 22:00 mark should never be allowed around children. No clue about child development. All he is thinking about is winning soccer games and not the welfare of the child. Horrendous system!

The guy at the 22 :00 mark completely contradicted why he thinks academy’s are so good . He mentioned 2 players , Jack Wiltshire & Harry Kane. Where are they both now ? Anyone can spot a Messi but a good coach should be able to nurture and “develop” someone who has ability and potential

He was pretty ridiculous. While some kids are "elite" at a very young age, there are many kids who develop later and become elite. I don't have data in front of me, but I would be willing to bet that most pro-level athletes were not prodigies at six or seven, but started to see the difference at around 12-14 years old, when everyone's bodies start to catch up to their skills. To make such sweeping assertions about 6 & 7 year-olds is absurd for 99.99% of athletes, IMO.
@vtrmcs
@vtrmcs Жыл бұрын
@@jeffvanderwerf3561 You're absolutely correct. Nothing a 7 year old does is reflective of their overall potential. In the UK they have to sit exams at 6/7, it's the most stupid system ever devised. Football is the same. In football, you get a 6 year old who's tiny but skilled and a much larger child of the same age who can simply shove them off the ball. How can someone scout that and be proud of it? Yes, theres talent, but in U7's, the talent I've seen is from kids already IN academies for what reason I don't know.

Sorry don’t completely agree. I think elite kids will benefit being in an elite atmosphere. That doesn’t mean they should care about winning. It’s like if a kid is way above avg in math you might get him a special tutor so he’s not held back.

tbh people need develope their children holisticaly in these environemts and put more emphasis on character development and mental resiliance and not just skills. Most of these kids look painfuly narrowmided but i guess that comes in time.

A HUGE part of the problem is the terminology used. The fact that these guys will openly go on camera and say they are an "academy"... you aint! You are a "Soccer school". There is a HUGE difference. Nurseries dont get to call themselves Universities, and these guys should not be saying they are an academy. Academies have to meet a criteria, a criteria that no one in this video is anywhere near meeting. They are grassroots soccer schools and there is nothing wrong with that, but the terminology they are using is knowingly or unknowingly selling dreams and lies.

Same happening in all sports - ‘academies’. Just a way of making parents believe their kids are special and getting money out of them… They all they are running the Ajax system of developing talents through but this is just churn and burn, killing dreams and happiness out of playing the game.

I have question , so when you join a football academy do those players go to school at the same time? Or can’t they ?Why bet everything one ONE thing? Surely you should have a back up plan(Note: I’m from the US thats why I’m not knowledgeable on this)

You go to school as that's a requirement by law however the quality of education you get depends on whether the club provides that education by putting the child in a private school or some school they have links with. However this is new. Before this became a thing you gave up your education for footy here.

The acsdemy system pre 16 is an after school activity, until 14 plus then it starts yo get more serious. The academies have because of (pressure from well publicized suicides and other scandals), have got more academic elements post 16 but they are football mills. Grinding through thousands of the kids to find 1 or 2 kids per year whom will become professional players. Its a brutal system that discatds kids at every level with a 'your not progressing', that's part of tbe fabric of world football. Hope that was helpful.

The bigger academies also provide the schooling. Even in the USA. For ex I know a kid at San Jose Earthquakes academy and they partner with an educational institution to provide the schooling.

They put a lot of science in football which is good but they're a lot of fantastic players coming from developing countries that don't go through the microscope as they do here in England. Just to name a few Samuel Eto'o, Yaya Toure never had that experience as children.

yaya toure came through the ivorian academies, they are notoriously savage. generally kids played for hours and hours with their friends, then around 11 they would go into academies even in england, its a big business now

Still better than the American football development strategy. Develop brain damage in highschool or college with no pay. The public tax money pays for the development of players and pay millions of dollars to college coaches. Than the NFL gets to pick the best of the lot while thousands of players get a "degree" which is worthless because most of the kids skipped classes or took bullshit classes. Also don't get me started on QB academies which parents have to privately pay for when the kids are as young as 11. If you're son doesn't make it to the NFL you get no return on the investment and lost hundred of thousands of dollars. All of this for free training and development for the NFL. Which also get free stadiums.
