Adam McKola goes on a journey to try and discover why professional football in Britain continues to overlook British Asians. We follow Adam as he discovers the reasons some British Asian footballers and coaches feel they have been held back, reasons for this and what the football governing bodies and the British Asian communities can do to improve the amount of British Asians at football's highest level.
Has football failed British Asians?

To become a pro footballer, you have to basically disregard the educational path which leads to A-Levels and then University. Many families do not want their children to gamble with their education for the slim chance of becoming a pro. This may be part of the reasoning behind certain communities not viewing sport as a career option.

This was a point that they discussed in the video! The interviewee was saying that this wasn’t entirely true because he gets approached by parents that want their child to pursue athletics. While the cultural aspect of the importance of education was a thing of the past and is currently existing, that aspect is changing.

I actually have my own story. I’m 19 And last year was one of the best on my academy team yet the manager didn’t fancy using me and I don’t know why. I was performing well in training yet still was getting no gametime. I think we have a stereotype about us that we are different , we are weak and can’t play at a high level. Ever since I started playing football at the age of 4 , I have wanted to play professional football. I have also tried out for a non league first team , I performed better then most players in the actual first team in training and scored one exception goal where even all the senior players congratulated me and told me they hoped to see me again. Yep you guessed it , no phone call back from the manager and no communication. I believe I only got the trial in the first place is because I sounded English on the telephone. Even though I was born here and lived here all my life. Anyways , great documentary Adam and Copa 90.

Lmao what? I am white and I was rejected plenty of times from different places before I managed to gain recognition from my county team. Asian have less testosterone than black and white its a fact but its a taboo so nobody talk about it. Believe me im from mauritius island, an island 60% indian, 30% black and 10% white and chinese. The football team is 100% black or mixed black. I live in france and we (black) are aproximatively 5million on a total of 67million, that’s only 6% of the population and look at the team. North african (berber and arab like benzema or zidane)are almost 10million but they are not many (fekir, rami, benzema, ben arfa, nasri, guendouzi) i can count them on my hand. Why you think on a population of 1,5billion, there are not a fucking single indian atlethe ? Because they are weak and skinny its the reality i dont want to be bad i have indian blood myself and i see clearly the difference when im in mauritius or even in france ... If black dominated sprint, boxe and basket its not a hazard. If white dominated strongman, natation its not a hazard. Black and white are the strongest its a fact just look at UFC, boxe, american football, basketball, football .. Its always a majority of black and white i never seen an indian fighter or basketter ... Sorry for my english

What people want is the same recognition as everyone else. They don’t want to be favored, but looked at equally. So when you have scouts that have preconceived notions about a player, solely only their origins, it will impact their reach. The bigger issue is outside of sports and should be focused on. The everyday social subjectives that are present in society has a trickle down effect into sports, education, jobs, etc.

I get the whole 'my parents want me to be a lawyer/doctor' narrative but I can't see how that accounts for the lack of at least a few breakthrough players. African parents are also notoriously strict yet there's many British players of African origin. I live in a town with a large Asian population and to say all young Asians are education focused/on the path to high flying careers simply isn't true; just like any race you have some parents who are strict, some interested in sports and some not interested either way.

I feel like a lot of things have to go your way to become a professional footballer. One of which is luck. Technical ability is only part of the puzzle. I’ve seen so many exceptional players never get noticed because they weren’t in the right place at the right time. Also seen other exceptional players who have had to give up their football careers because of tragedies like one guy I know who was a Tottenham youth academy player went through a time where his parents died and he had to quit football to work to support him and his younger sister. It’s a very complex topic.

But parents would never let me play football because it was dangerous. I become statistical analysis who is tad over weight, but I will always wonder what could of been every time I watch a game. I think with pain in the community things will change. An entire generation of people thinking would could of been, usually in history the next generation goes on to do things no one expected as they will be backed all the way.

This entire problem is the same problem that we have in America, but just with kids in general. Even the best high school football players out there never join academies because they would rather play at the college level and get free university education through athletic scholarships. Then after college, they get a job and live a normal life. Young, talented footballers here in the US aren't encouraged to pursue a professional football contract because they assume they'll never get one.

Asian societies are heavily based on class, a family will do all it can to build itself as a high respectable family in their society. Football however has always been a lower class of sport and therefore thats where I think the problem lies. If this wasn't the case and the problem only occurs with British Asians then it does not explain why almost all asian national teams are not the best and there is no stand out asian player in the world.

Very interesting. I think it’s a combination of things. Once upon a time, I was desperate to become a Pro but a lot of things I felt just worked against me. From family support to the cultural differences. Eg. Drinking and even things like walking around naked in the changing room! (Sounds silly but it’s not something within Asians culture!) Even though I am a British Asian, there are just some small and big things that really work against Asians making it imo. What’s interesting is, in Germany, they manage to produce German Turkish footballers and in France they produce French Arab footballers. Yet in The UK, we do not see any British Turkish/Arab Professionals never mind British Asians! So there is something definitely wrong with the system too!

Well done Adam, Danny and Mat on producing this. I’m married to a Sikh so I have a slightly different insight and from getting to know and learning the culture it’s very much family first and a good career. That simply comes from previous generations in India who were poor and just wanted a better quality of life. As I watched the video though I didn’t agree with the racism part but I guess that was me being ignorant to the fact that it happens and reading through these comments it’s become apparent that actually it’s an issue. We’re in 2019 and this is going on which baffles me. It’s a shame really, hopefully things will change

It's a great video Copa 90. thanks Adam :) Socio-Cultural variations have effect on football. Note: The general view of why not many footballers don't turn into pros is parents don't want to risk a person to go to a profession (football) where 2% population succeed to get into a football club and rest 98% fail to even get through. So as sample size is large, it states the obvious reasons of parents reluctance of making a child explore football in full time and make it is a hobby. Getting money on a fixed income is not even possible for many who just aspires. It's that simple.....!
