In this live stream, I show you a great jazz archtop guitar that I am selling and is one of the most affordable on the market. The Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II is an awesome choice for someone who is looking to spend under $1000. You can pick these up for $500 to $800, depending on the condition. I will also show you another great archtop option that is also pretty affordable. The Eastman AR610CE is a great choice for the low-to-medium price range, especially since it features a floating pickup design. We will also be answering your questions and chatting about other topics as well. Please, add your questions and comments to the chat! Thanks for watching!

Despite having an Eastman T49V and other decent guitars, I went out and bought one of these Epi Joe Pass yesterday at a *very* reasonable price. Courtesy of this video. Just what I needed - another guitar !! Mine is a Samick Korea model from 1999. Not a bad guitar at all. Plays and sounds good. And the slightly shallower body is a welcome change

Great video thanks, I have a 2001 Korean Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II, I got it second hand and acoustically it just rings out beautifully, not just chops but single notes are sweet, so I play it mostly without an amp. I tried new Epipi J.P.'s but they sounded dull in comparison, maybe mine sounds better due to the age of its wood, or the Korean craftsmanship, or maybe its just the pixie dust they sprinkled over it in the factory :-)

I have find that Aria Pro guitars from the 70's and early 80's, built in Japan in the ibenez factory, are really great guitars for the money. They play very well and sound good. I have a few, like the Aria Herb Ellis, that I have changed the neck pickup and thing heads, and I love to play them.

Wonderful to hear Rich Severson put that Joe Pass Emperor II through its paces ! I was so frustrated with my Ibanez Artcore, even after swapping out the pickups for Seth Lovers but still the tone just wasn't pure. So I finally got myself the Joe Pass in mint condition for around $900 and, wonder of wonders, it has just the right sound. Although the back, sides and top are all laminated ( maple and spruce respectively, ) still those Epiphone Probucker pickups deliver really mellow jazz tone. Thanks for this !
@pharmerdavid1432

Interestingly I had the opposite experience: the Emperor II I had sounded dull, while my Artcore (full sized single cutaway) sounds especially resonant, the laminate is thinner than what Epiphone used?

Been playing one of these guitars for many years. Love it. Playability, sound.. It's not too big and it's light. Easy to carry around. One problem: it tends to make vibrating noises, coming from the pickup mounts, the tailpiece or the wiring. Mine is an older Korean Samick-made one. The newer Chinese ones look a bit different. More like they are painted yellow or something.. Mine shows more wood grain. | did not buy it for it's looks. I think a cheap guitar doesn't need to look ornate. We all now the gold is not gold (it wears off), the multi-ply binding is fake, the inlays are plastic etc. I'd rather see it look more simple. But it plays and sounds good.
@kevineh
@kevineh 10 ай бұрын
I can second that! I have a 1995 Korean made. Sounds and feels great, but those pickups can vibrate. I usually just tweak em a little and it goes away. I've stuck some felt in-between and it happens a bit less now.
@jeffslade1892
@jeffslade1892 Ай бұрын
My tail wires vibrated, the solder had let go of a loop. I had to use a micro-torch and EasyFlo jewellery silver solder very carefully, just a dab, to fix it. It is a bit of a skilled job for a jeweller or silver smith. If I strike a chord hard, the body growls, this is usable. Pickups are prone to wobble if the conical springs are fitted volte-face. The wires inside are supposed to go through some clips to stop them flapping about. I have had mine apart. There was a faulty pickup and I always fit linear volume pots. Nobody is killing tortoises or endangered molluscs now. Inlays have been mother of toilet-seat even on high-end guitars for years. Nobody in their right mind would use real gold for tuners, pickup covers and other furniture. The spruce top on mine has darkened nicely where the maple body and neck has not. The bindings have not let go, smooth and no raising, which can be a problem with real wood. It maybe worth notching slightly (less than the nut) the saddle with the nut files (do not use a swiss needle file), to adjust intonation, individual string height, and give a clean edge no sharper than a butter knife, which can stop the saddle "fluffing". The rosewood saddle can ba hardened with "teak oil". The floating bridge must fit the top, not rock in any way, it will acquire a top and bottom. A nut can buzz, they are always supplied too high, only partly finished, so we can nut file them lower.

I bought my Joe Pass way back in 94 , a pretty new model for Epiphone at the time and made in Korea by samick , I have modified it with all the hardware and pickups with Grovers a bigsby and Gibson p94 pickups, I think the next upgrade might be a lollar charlie christian humbucker sized pickup in the neck position. But that's another great thing about these guitars they're fine as is but upgrades make them amazing guitars and they're built in such a way to be really solid and stable as a great mod platform.

I have to thank you for the strap button advice, I've had this model for a while now and could never get a comfortable angle to play it, I drilled into the heel and put the button there this morning, what a difference it makes for sure. Different guitar now…love it👍 oh! And I installed a Seth Lover on the neck a couple of months ago and I’d advise other guitarists to do this as it really makes the sound much richer I think.

The Emperor II can be quite variable from one to the next. My Emperor II had a faulty pickup, the plate that the poles screw into had been drilled out, no thread and the screws were only held by the wax. Having destroyed the pickup finding that, I replaced them with Toneriders, very similar to the originals. The neck is very good. With a bit of fettling the action can be set very low for effortless playing even with heavy strings. The soundboard took a long while to play-in but got there. It is quite thick, which does mean you can play it through a stage amp with a band without it howling. Is it a jazz guitar? Yes, but it can play any genre, blues, jazz, R&B, rock, etc ad naus, except high-gain when it will howl. Drummers do have a volume control. They do not have to hit the heads as hard as possible. Drum sets come in various degrees of loudness.

Regarding the question about 'what is the JP Emperor modelled after ?' : Epiphone have recycled the names of some of their older models from decades ago. From 1999 to 2008 they produced a Zephyr Regent model that looks pretty much like a Gibson ES-165 but looks nothing like the original Zephyr Regent models produced by Epiphone in 1950s. Similarly, in the late 80's/early 90s they applied the Emperor name to new design eventually referred to as the Joe Pass model, but it bears no resemblance to the original Emperor models from decades ago, or even the Japanese-made Emperors from the 80's. Perhaps they want to keep alive the model names that have their roots in Epiphone, rather than come up with new model names.(?)

"CHEAP" is not a useful word because of the wide range of meanings. Is the laminate wood in a $700 archtop "cheap" compared to a Gibson 175 ? How wood you ( i make joke ) determine the difference ? You couldn't. We know the the pickups and tuners are going to be lower quality. Is the precision of the planing of the in neck and fretboard " cheap" ?

I have the Broadway, MIC, sounds and feels amazing. I've played (in shops only) more expensive, and collectible Gibsons, and I admit some feel and sound somewhat magical. However, not an extra $10k+++ magical. My friend has a handcarved solid B/S Eastman 800 series and it rivals the mystique. I'd say the broadway is 95% there though, especially as to playability. Feels very close to an L5 or some of those 40s/50s big boxes. Alas, ya can't have everything. I'd put a sturdy down payment on a 911 before getting a 57 L5.
