When was the last time you heard a taxi uncle speak into their walkie talkies to get customers?
In Singapore, Taman Jurong Radiophone Taxi Service was the first to use radiophone technology as a means to link up passengers with cabbies, which they still use up to this day.
With the advent of efficient ride-sharing businesses, the days of radiophone taxis might be numbered. However, Geok Szan and Mu Tong are some of the people left who continue to serve the community through the old-school devices, keeping their walkie talkies and friendships alive.

90s kid here. Seemed like only yesterday I was still hearing and seeing these walkie-talkies going off in the cab when it was cruising along the highway, when I was much younger. I would sit in the back (without a seatbelt like a badass lol because back then there were none) and stare at the walkie-talkie and go into a comfortable trance thanks to the static and some woman's voice (holy crap i probably heard this lady's voice and didn't even know it!) Now that I don't hear them anymore, I didn't realize when exactly I stopped hearing them until I saw this vid 😭 it's a nostalgic sound now but it used to be a sound that paid the bills and put food on the tables of the drivers' families 😕 how times have changed but we seem to have left behind the times when people used to talk to each other face to face socially and made a humble living with a "make do with what you get" mindset..sigh

This service was popular in the 70's. There was one at Sixth Avenue which my mum would book with in advance every time my dad needed a taxi to go to the airport for an early morning flight.

Maybe you should start recruiting again. Who knows the respond could be overwhelming. I find that taking Grab is now more expensive than normal taxi.

My father used to work as a taxi driver with the Bukit Timah radio taxi. So glad you managed to get a hold of this one at Taman Jurong before it inevitably disappears. "39, 39"
