WAR IN THE POCKET is the first Gundam side story that returned to the One Year War period. This new story would feature an entire new cast that had absolutely no relation to our previous protagonists other than being part of the Federation or Zeon.This was also the first gundam story to not be helmed by Tomino, yet, it was in good hands with character designer Haruhiko Mikimoto and mecha designs by Yutaka Izubuchi.
So my friends, I'm Absa, and in this video I'm going to explore the first gundam side story, a tragic yet highly entertaining plot about a young boy, a Zeon soldier and a Federation Pilot who almost became friends in a neutral colony.

Few Gundam series hit quite as hard as 0080.

The Kämpfer was reintroduced as the Titania variant in the video game Code Fairy (Gundam Battle Operation 2), that also takes place during the last days of the One Year War at the North American front

sadly its still a pale imitation to the titania from the sd g generations that thing was an absolute monster also the kampfer high mobility type from uc engage also is far more an exceptional kampfer reimagine heck id say the kampfer amazing from the build series was better then titania and as much as i love the suit in gbo2 code fairy was some serious fan fic stuff set during and showing some decent back story to parts of the oyw

I recalled that in lore, the kampfer line gave birth to the gerbera tetra line which in turn, gave birth to the sazabi line. So you can say, the kampfer's design is like a blue baby Sazabi And with this movie coming after CCA, now it makes sense the Alex' design is very similar to the Nu gundam.

original design wise yes lore wise development wise no the tetra was in lore based off anaheim shipping the zeon remnants a smuggled unfinished gp04 they basicly scrapped and modified into the tetra for cima and used its designs and parts for various suit advancements and a few special units got parts from it (filius streams gabaldy used its rifle and shield and some parts they had to spare to modifiy his unit) lore wise sazabi was based off testing done w pyscho frame tech in the dogas leading to psycho doga then funnel geara dogas and jagd dogas which eventually got the retcon light of varguil being a sazabi prototype and became moon gundam when it got fixed w the g doors (mini psycho gundam type)s head during moon gundam for whats its worth they really have added alot to the pre unicorn uc timeline over the years that has fleshed alot out pretty heavily in terms of development lore in terms of original suit art design timeline since so many series got done over decades jumping around the timeline that is even more interesting to see the design thoughts and path then the additions or insert/retcons later and how their newer designs fit in or were made to fit into what they wanted to do

Kampfer doesn't give birth to gerbera tetra, but in UC engage, they did test gerbera tetra equipment on kampfer before being applied to gerbera gundam.

It’s funny. I actually prefer the Gundam stories without Newtypes. I like the concept of spacefaring humans evolving differently than earthbound humans and exploring the conflict that causes. But Gundam Newtypes just seem ridiculously OP to me. I just prefer my mecha anime to be more “hard sci fi”.

@Abhsalonikas I personally liked this Gundam series quite a bit. It shows an interesting juxtaposition on how war is romantized vs the reality of war. I think having it shown through the lens of an 11 year kid is unnerving, because up until the later half of the ova, the boy idolizes war and is intrigued by violence without knowing what any of it really means . Yes he is bratty for sure, but in his defense he is very sheltered and never experienced war in the beginning. He's naive . And depsite having a complicated home life, he still lives a relatively comfortable life with a roof over his head and food in his mouth. Kids in third world countries don't have that luxury like Al has in the beginning of the ova. Not invalidating his struggles with his family. Having divorced parents or a break in the family is difficult on it's own. And I can see why he idolizes Bernie in the series. He's the closest thing to a male figure to look up to. Without a father present in his life, he found a brother figure but unfortunately lost Bernie due to the cruel reality of the world.

i loved 0080 it felt unique and tragic the opening antarctic base battle was amazing w a great showcase of awesome suits the fights towards the end where great especially w the kampfer the zaku vs alex was sad the alex got smashed because it was soo much to handle for kristina because of its nt design and its advancements and her not being a super hardened suit pilot vs the cyclops team pilots who even bernie handled the zaku like a pro and if not for the kid being there and him being so demoralized and torn on things he died to it when he really wouldnt of wanted to kill her anyway but he didnt wanna see the colony get nuked either and after it all the insane ptsd that kid has to have after all he witnessed how close he was to the fight too it was beautiful and tragic and just very real feeling it hasnt ever gotten any less deep and gorgeous to me over the years and it still tugs at my heart a bit seeing the ending and the message it sends it didn’t romanticize war it showed how horrible tragic and out of our control it could be like bernie feeling like he had to try and finish the mission vs just following orders bailing and reporting info back to potentially help the nuke mission and it would if meant he was safe and he couldnt just defect or who would believe him and he would be jailed for life for his part in the attacks so what could he do the show was imho perfect peak gundam the story the setting the designs of the suits and entire background design 0080 just showcased so many many peak things about the uc verse and story and just good story writing in general im rambling and gushing now but its absolutely peak gundam period

War in the pocket for me when I was younger. I though it was boring and only the finale with the khampher was cool. I though it was cool to see the war on the zeon side aka like the ww2 axis german side. Then I love it because it was a slice of life, a tragedy on what could have been, should have been, but did not come. Plus no new types and flying funnels everywhere. Just real tactics and skill. I do like the steilhelm helmet on the zaku though.

I also love how more nuanced each side is. Bernie isn't a bad guy really. And even the Zeons feel more human as well. In reality, most people are morally grey. Yes there are people we would call deplorable for henious actions However, in our world , there is no such thing as a "good" or "bad" guy. Life is not that simple. It's never black or white . There are no heros or villians. It's more complex than that.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on War in the Pocket. I think it's one of the better entries in the UC. Sure Al is annoying. He's 10, but he's no where near the top 5 like: Quess, Nina Purpleton, etc. Also I don't need Newtype space magic to enjoy the story either. Sure it adds a different dimension, but I watch it for it being a more grounded Mecha series. So there shouldn't be that many Newtype's. Did you have the "it needs Newtype magic" for Stardust Memory? 08th MS Team? Appreciate you gushing your load over the Kempfer & at the time modernization redesigns, but again.... meh on the rest of the video essay. Not gonna like or dislike the video

I think the "newtype magic" isn't as overt in "the three eights" as much as it's implied. But it's there if you know where to look for it. There's small moments, moments that make the watcher who knows Gundam say "aha! That one is a Newtype!," like Al's nervous breakdown at the end of 0080, or how Gato "felt" Nina Purpleton's presence in the colony's control room at the end of 0083, or how the fight between Shiro Amada and Norris Packard revealed something latent in Shiro that helped him overcome the Gouf, "once he stops thinking about it, he'll be a force to be reckoned with." You can watch the Three Eights without ever referencing Newtypes. But honestly, after watching them for many years, a lot of the moments in The Three Eights make a lot more sense when you know about Newtypes and how they think and feel.

@Abhsalonikas I feel most Gundam Anime have always had this underlying message. That's why I like Gundam. Gundam makes you think , ponder, and reevaluate yourself and the perspective you view from. It's very complicated, cause while yes the mecha are cool , the context of the situations and battles is anything but fun or glorious. It's usually devastating and brutal . I usually feel deeply unnerved with the conflicts of most Gundam Anime, because I know each side usually has a family or more to them then meets the eye. Most aren't nameless faces , alot of them are people trying to survive and live in a world consumed by violence and conflict. Well that's my interpretation anyways.

I agree with you Absa; I didn't like 0080 as much as 0083 and 08th MS Team (The "three eights"). I wanted more battles, more mech-fu fighting, and more drama in the cockpits. But I do have to say this much about 0080: it has some of the best MOMENTS in any Gundam series, Tomino or no. The first five minutes of 0080 is some of the best MS combat I've ever seen animated; it still holds up today. The last MS battle between Bernie's Zaku and the Alex was just how you'd want a climax to look and feel...and you described the stakes PERFECTLY, Absa. But it's just all the things in between that get frustrating. So many good designs introduced here that we just didin't see enough (Gelgoog JG, MP Guncannon, Sniper Custom II).

War in the Pocket was one of the first Gunadm anime that I watched after Unicorn. Truthfully, since this was around the time when I was really getting into Gundam as a whole, I decided to go with something short, which in hindsight, was a mistake. Like you, I was very much into the "Newtype magic" at the time, especially since I was much younger, so War in the Pocket not giving me more of that was a bit of a disappointment. I was intending to rewatch it at some point as well, but I'm not sure how much more I'd end up liking it in the end, although I might have a better appreciation for it after a few years. I do still quite like the style and looks of the OVA, and I actually think that all of the mobile suits look pretty great. Speaking of which, fun fact about the name of the ALEX. The name itself is an acronym, but can also be read as "RX" in Japanese, much like the model number. I stole that one from the EN Gundam Wiki.

War in the pocket is a slap to the face of radical AU gundam fans. Those who thought gundam should all be about edgy cardboard main casts who pilots super robots and one shotting whole armies. Or those who thought gundam is only all about selling gunplas. Bernie's death hit so hard considering how utterly pointless it was. Destroying the Alex gundam wouldn't save Zeon. Oh and I find it hilarious how trash MCs like Kira and Heero can survive more violent explosions. But leave it to their brain dead fanboys to use it as ammunition in VS battles

The young boy Al is forced to face the reality of war. No war is justified. And he ultimately lost the one and only person he was closest to. Ironically Al was not that close with his own blood due to the divide in his home. I'd even go far as to call him and Bernie long lost brothers. That boy was the only one who knew of Bernie's existence. It's very sad, considering we get nothing about the man's life or if he even had a family. But in rare circumstances, Bernie found family in an unusual way. His memory will live on with that boy. He will be remembered, but unfortunately Al is too young and traumatized to experience any of it. If only him and Bernie met under different circumstances, mabye , just mabye Bernie would still be alive .

I stand with many of these comments, I love 0080. While it is absolutely right, that Newtype is the main driving force of UC, but it is hard to grasp for us, human, to take such an evolutionary leap in our short life. For me, I just have no reason to dislike it just because there is no Newtype thing...Regardless, I don't really like the story because of Al, I agreed that he is annoying and his "delusion" is beyond compromise. So, I don't like it because it made me uncomfortable after watching it... But still, I love 0080 for punching me in the gut and slap in the face 😅
@Beatnik59
@Beatnik59 10 ай бұрын
I think the Newtype thing is still there in 0080, but it just isn't so overtly presented. Understanding Al as a Newtype helps us to understand his delusions, as well as his insight (like his clairvoyance about the security guard, for example).

hating 0080 is baseless. 0080 is representative of what Gundam means as a whole. anti-war. glorification of violence which becomes the death of innocence and loss of hope for the future. i've come to realize that people who don't like 0080 just don’t like Gundam.

I'm like you, I love Gundam for the Newtype stories. But I did really like this series. But I get where you are coming from, it rubs me the wrong way how Gundam Sentinel etc. was trying to pull Gundam away from Newtypes. For me Gundam works best when all the political, war, and group dynamics orbit around the Newtype experience of the main characters. That being said I think this was a really good show and I like it, even if I dont like the directorial intent to get away from Newtypes that seemed prevalent at the time

That's why I like Gundam: The Origin so much, because I think it combines the best aspects of both sides of Gundam: the Newtype mysticism, and the hard gritty political realism.
