** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Confiable is James Sinclair's 100th sudoku published on Logic Masters Germany and we predict this will be a puzzle long-remembered. This is APPROACHABLE and yet absolutely beautiful and will have you shaking your head in wonder... Let us know if we're right!
Have a go at the puzzle here:
sudokupad.app/james-sinclair/...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in a cage cannot repeat and must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Digits along an arrow sum to the digit in that arrow’s circle. Digits in cells separated by a black dot have a 1:2 ratio (ie one digit is double the other).
The puzzle Simon mentioned in the introduction is called Region Geometry and it's by Emre Kolotoğlu. If you have some minutes free, you can try it at the link below. (Simon's solve is unlikely to appear because the video is 3hrs 36mins long and the KZfaq algorithm will not be kind to it.

Thanks so much for the feature! Very happy to be able to give you a break after Emre's puzzle 😁. On top of being my 100th puzzle on LMD, this one first appeared in Artisanal Sudoku, where I publish five new puzzles every week (I'll occasionally cross-post one on LMD, but most are only available there). The name, by the way, is a little bit self-deprecating. I feel like I set a lot of puzzles that rely on cages and arrows and near-symmetry, and I worry that it's a well I draw from too often, but it's also a formula that seems to work and has resulted in some of my favorite puzzles. Hence "confiable", Spanish for reliable (possibly related: I set a lot of puzzles and am running out of English words and phrases to use as names 😆)

I solved this yesterday from your newsletter and loved it very much. But I was happy to see Simon featured it on the channel as well, so I could watch it and experience the logic once more :) I thought Simon's solve flowed very well and really showed off the beauty of the puzzle (I'm still quite a bit slower than he.) Thanks James for your beautiful work!

This was really beautiful. I am really glad you decided to keep using this formula. By the way, *near-symmetry* means this can be solved with *placeholder digits,* as I did. But in this case mirror-symmetry is broken in places that are difficult to ignore (the *black dot* in box 1 and the *arrows* in box 5), so it is not easy to apply this trick, and probably not needed for most people. For sure, Simon would have been slowed down if he had used them. He was able to intuit everything in the blink of an eye, while I needed placeholders to understand that both the 16-cages contained a *9* (and, by the way, similar logic can be used immediately after to rule out 5 from the circles in boxes 2 and 7.)

Yes, but just remember Simon has always had a tendency to exaggerate the hype and also to try to write a somewhat clickbaity title for the algorithm. For the first few years of the channel, the sudoku videos averaged about 15 minutes probably. It’s only recent history that would have Simon call this one of the easiest (also it’s in contrast with the 3 hour solve he did on the same day).

I had three digits after a couple of minutes but now I'm at the 25 minute mark without any more progress apart from some pencilmarks. I think it's not easy at all and not even particularly approachable. I'm sure there is some crazy, out-of-the-box logic that geniuses see immediately but that's not what approachable means I think. An approachable puzzle is when you have multiple avenues to break in - this one looks like it requires one specific thing to really break it open and without that it's hopeless.

I've been watching this channel for about 3 years now. I have never tried to solve the puzzle myself until today, solely because I watched the first two minutes of this video and heard that the puzzle was easy. I just finished the puzzle. It took me 230 minutes. I broke the puzzle multiple times. It was amazing and horrible. I am scared to finish this video and see Simon finish the puzzle in about 15 minutes. I love the videos from this channel! I think I will stick to watching the puzzles for a while before I try to solve one again! EDIT: I watched the video and I’m amazed that I seemingly solved the puzzle backwards. I placed the 3 in box one by placing it in boxes 3 and 7, then proving that it could not be in the cage in box 1. I don’t know how I even finished it at all, but it was worth it!

I consistently try to logic backwards of what Simon does. ie, If he uses color to rule out options, I flail because I try to use color to rule in options. I don’t know how or why but this happens a lot. If I get stuck, stuck, I watch a bit until I get un-stuck. My good times are usually double the video length 😜

There’s another critical moment of asymmetry across the diagonal, in box 5
@Raven-Creations
@Raven-Creations 4 ай бұрын
@ 10:15 - "The only break in the symmetry is this black dot" - and the arrows in the 14 cage. I did like the way the 59s worked to force the 16 cages both to be 1249. There was similar lovely logic on R9C3/R3C9, forcing them both to be 3 - in theory, they could have been 356, but there's a virtual 67 in R9C4-9, and R4-9C9, so 6 was ruled out, and the 59s pull a similar trick forcing 5 into R9C4/5 and R4/5C9, ruling out 5. Also, because of the 12 pairs in boxes 2 & 4, the two circles in box 1 had to be 789, but that meant that the 20 cage couldn't have more than one of 789 in it, so it had to be 569. The 6 had to go on the dot with 3, the arrows were 78, and had to be 34 or 35, and the 59 in C1 said which was which. Your flirtation with blue revealed that there was the 67 pair mentioned above (which was symmetrical), but you failed to spot it, and had you tried the same with the 59s you'd have spotted that neither of the arrows in the 16 cages could be 5 either. Sadly, you missed a lot of the gorgeousness by doing sudoku of all things! What's got into you? I prefer more of a challenge, but this was definitely one of the most beautifully constructed puzzles, and it was very enjoyable spotting all the logic.
@thebitterfig9903
@thebitterfig9903 4 ай бұрын
What I found really lovely about the black dot in box one was not that the digits in it were themselves immediately vital, but that it fixed a pair into the other two digits in the cage, and that’s what made the biggest difference.

That was classic James… the symmetry and the use of well known constraints to create something very interesting that feels fresh. As you said, it is a formula that works… and as long as you enjoy setting these kind of puzzles and people enjoy solving them, that’s all that matters! Happy 100th puzzleversary! 🎉

Simon's speed to figure out that both the 16-cages contained a *9* (@8:25) was impressive. 👏👏👏👏 I needed *placeholder digits* to understand that. At 12:02 when Simon wonders if there is some restriction on 5s, there is actually a bit of beautiful symmetrical logic. If R3C9 is 5, then R6C3 is a 5. But now 5 can't go anywhere in box 6. Similarly, if R9C3 is 5, then R3C6 is a 5. In this case 5 can't go into box 8. So you can eliminate 5 from both R3C9 and R9C3.

28:34. Longer than I'd like, but I stuffed up early on by trying to make it way more complicated than it needed to be! Once I restarted I did a lot better. It's nice to have these shorter puzzles to unwind after a workday!

Liked this puzzel, do need some help, did start it with box 9 and around box 5 but missed the 1-2 next to 5-9 so when I head Simon say that I could finish it. So thankyou Simon. Took me like 59min but did manage it :)

"One of the EASIEST", yeah, sure. Only took me 95:43 on the second attempt. I must be the lousiest solver of all on this channel. (I do not even manage to solve the ones I myself construct.) That said, I kind of could see the path and follow the logic quite clearly (at least in the first half before I had to start hunting out the digits one by one). Was a very enjoyable puzzle. Now I'll watch Simon's solve and flagellate myself with disgust over the simple tricks I missed in my solve.

I got 3 digits in the first minute, then it took me about 20 minutes to figure out the 16 cages lol. After that it was pretty smooth. Got stuck for about 5 minutes till i figurednout the naked single in box 3. Fun puzzle though thank you. Also i would watch a 3.5 hour vid

I thought I could do the "easy" one, as I've done other harder ones, but nope, this puzzle just wasn't for me or something. I got thru box 9 but got totally stuck and no number of hints from Simon was unstucking me.
