Oh my, oh my. This is actually 40 years ago! I was a massive Borg fan. I had his poster on my bedroom wall and when he won this 5th Wimbledon I sat screaming in front of the tv. I saw him play twice. Once when he was in his prime when I was 16, in 1978, and once against McEnroe in the senior circuit. And yes - i have the photographs to prove it..... My all time hero. And yes - tennis has become sooooo boring nowadays that I don t even bother to watch anymore.

I watched this final on the television in 1980 when I was 15 years old. This was one of the best finals ever at Wimbledon with Borg winning his fifth and final Wimbledon title having won the previous four in a row. The final the following year when McEnroe beat Borg to win his first Wimbledon title was just as good. This match showed every aspect of the game of tennis and was much more entertaining than watching some of today's players smashing down 135mph aces. They were using wooden rackets and the balls were not as good as they are now but the skill level from both players was amazing. Also the players back then just got on with it there was no bouncing the ball 20 times before every serve and no constant clothing adjustments like we see today. I don't think I need to spell it out.

Wow! Watched this match highlights Tennis was something else in that era, wooden rackets and all. This was definitely one of the greatest match. IN line to Fedrer and Nadal 2008 match which is our era Wimbledon. But on thing Bjorn Borg, I watched his grand slams highlights hands off to that guy to make tennis ultra glamorous and not only he was the epitome of style but he was one of the greatest players as well. Though I didn't even born in his era, but I like his style of tennis and dressing sense.

I remember watching this live...If I remember correctly, one of the things that made this match great was that McEnroe was just completely dominating Borg for almost the entire two first sets. Dominant meaning Borg had zero break points on McEnroe's serve until the very end of the second set. And Borg had to struggle and get out of potential service breaks in the second set, to keep from going down 2-0 in sets. (Having been blown away by McEnroe in the first set.) Again, if my memory is correct, McEnroe had no trouble on his service games right up until he was serving at 5-6 in the second set, when Borg got a look at two break points at 15-40...AND BORG CONVERTED! So what had really been a one-sided match suddenly was tied up at 1 set apiece. (Huge swing in momentum.) Plus most people don't know Borg was actually much more comfortable on the baseline, but somehow managed to adapt his game to come into net often, including serve and volleying, (to keep McEnroe from going to net first, where McEnroe was a dominant player-the wood rackets of those days were a lot smaller and much less powerful whenever the ball was struck off center,( so serve and volley was the best strategy on grass, where the ball bounces are more unpredictable).

His acting, like his playing style, was rather the perfect opposite than Bjorn, which wouldn't make any sense from somebody who is "desperately trying to act and look bla blah". So when he said that he wanted to look like Bjorn he was basically praising his most respected rival. Something that goes beyond your comprehension. Have a look at the wear marks on the court in this 1980 match and compare them to recent years. A lot more serve and volley back then.

The grass dictated that. It's like a fast hard court now.

Queued overnight to get into the standing area to watch this match when I was a teenager. Sadly I remember very little about it beside how difficult it was to sleep on the hard pavement and the soup that was brought round for all those waiting in line.

I can't see the damn ball! I could see everything just fine back when I watched it live on my 20" RCA Colortrack. What the hell? My eyes are just fine, thank you very much.

The tightest match I've ever seen. More net shots than any other. Borg's spin was under-rated (it caused his opponent's ball to go out of control/into the net).

But move forward one year to 1981 and it was McEnroe defeating Borg for the title. The end of Borg and the peak of McEnroe. Both were great champions of the game.

To me, this was the apex of the sport of tennis: McEnroe v Borg. Contrasting styles and contrasting personalities, but mutual respect. They ended up 7-7 in their careers, but that statistic is somewhat misleading. None of their matches were on clay, Borg's best surface. McEnroe wasn't particularly competitive on clay. He didn't need to be, but it does in my opinion indicate that Borg was the more complete player.

Since they didn´t play on clay, we will never know how Mac would have fared against Björn. He might actually have been beaten him, since he was no slouch on clay, either. He had wins over Lendl, Wilander, Vilas and Clerc on the dirt .. so who is to say he couldn´t beat Borg?!
