German style, or "closet rod", jousting... very dangerous form. People ended up using more breakable lances to avoid hits like that in the French style: which has a smaller target shield on the jouster called an ecranche that must be struck and also break the lance in order for a point to be scored. The lance I've seen for the people that do French are made of metal but the tip (~3 ft or so) is made of spiral-cut pinewood, which still takes 800+lbs of pressure in order to break but the breakage doesn't become sharp to the point of being a danger to the animals or ground crew and the knights don't get injured too quickly in the event.

I was there. I saw that hit. You could feel the crack of the lance and armor slap your eardrums. It sounded like a gunshot. You can hear the crowd ooh at that.

Likely. And they used this method in real combat, too, with pointed tips rather than blunt. So it's possible that at some point two knights impaled each other during a charge.

@@rayanderson5797 yeah, i guess putting that much pressure into one point would break most armors

@@sethleoric2598 Actually at a certain point in history lances started proving ineffective against plate chestpieces, that's what helped the push along to cavalry using guns, charging forward into the fray and shooting the line they charged. Of course this was after hundreds of years of lance use, so they were good for quite a while. Just took plate to become more common, and by then gunpowder was ready to take off.
