BIG NEWS: We have just reached 5,000 patrons on Patreon. A huge thank you to everyone who is supporting us. As a result we have released the Sudoku Murder Mystery Hunt FREE. Just follow the link below and get cracking the crime!!!
/ crackingthecryptic
Today's sudoku has proved enormously popular on Logic Masters Germany (where the quote from the video title can be found) and the Discord server. It's called Broken Renbarrow and it's by G. Have a go at it at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. The digit on one end of each line is the sum of the 'other digits' on the same line. Those 'other digits' are a consecutive non-repeating set in any order.
There is a practice puzzle with the same rules (except the circles on each arrow are given) here:

Simon focuses on the larger logic that solves the puzzle, so he misses minor things that the rest of us notice as we sit here watching and looking at basic Sudoku logic. I'm personally not proud of noticing these things. It's more of a sign that Simon is leagues better than you or I.

I find it so interesting that you saw the 123 triple in row 3 but not the 234 triple in column three. I love how you see things to be honest. Often the most brilliant minds fail to see what the average mind does but sees other things none of us can. Great solve :)

Does anyone else have musical pieces playing through their heads when Simon solves these puzzles? There is such a rhythm to it, I don't always hear the tempo correctly, but the movement, the way he solves it, the clacking of the keys - it's all there for me. I also sing randomly to myself when I solve, so maybe it's a me thing? Either way - to me watching Simon, it's like watching a music video. Thank you for these moments of joy in my day :)

This was amazing and interesting. One of the first ones I've finished in less than the video length (yes I know there's rambling but I count that as a handicap time). I didn't use parity, or at least not concously, just the "possibilities" pencil marked for potential end points until I had enough info to disambiguate the ends and/or values. Great puzzle.

Fun fact: every single 9 in this puzzle could be part of a 4 cell renbarrow, (I.E. they touch a 4 3 2 string of digits in some way) It's left as an exercise for the reader to calculate the probability of that happening on a random sudoku :)

23:38 That matches the time from “Let’s get cracking” to the end of the video, making it the closest I’ve ever come to Simon’s solve time (but since he finished 57 seconds before the end of the video, I didn’t quite make it). Definitely a great puzzle. I wonder how this variant would work if a 2-digit “pill” was allowed at the end of a line to represent the sum. My head hurts just thinking about that possibility.

It's the first sudoku I tried in ages and my first ever without any digits at all. I have to say it was a good start into the more tricky puzzles. My scanning was rubbish, I confused myself with the software (it is great, I am just inept) and advanced pencil marks, and I made a mistake at one point requiring taking several steps back...but it was a great puzzle overall. Thank you, CtC, for the wonderful channel and daily dose of sudoku entertainment:)

Besides The Witness, which is arguably one of the best puzzle games ever made, I would also recommend indy puzzle games for streaming since they usually has much shorter playthrough time. One of my favorite from last year is called Filament, which combines puzzle-solving and story-telling in a delicate way. The playthrough time is about 30-40 hr for over 300 puzzles.

I recently came back from a Korea deployment. As I'm sure everyone knows we wake up super early. So with the time difference I'd finished exercises. Go back to my room. The warm up puzzle helped a lot, getting a good feel for the rules, especially on what can be in bulbs. I made the "mistake" to look at the comments before starting so I got a hint on a break-in (not an actual digit, but just what numbers to focus on) so when I started pencilmarking I immediately noticed what is "missing". Not sure if I had found it without the hint. Still took me a good 40 minutes, but it was a smooth work - with the feeling that it unwinds well. Like the new rules very much.

I loved that, it was so much fun, and fully deserves it's plaudits. I particularly liked the purity of this, just one rule (apart from normal sudoku). I think this variant has legs. This ruleset does mean that lines can't be longer than four, which eliminates some of the subtleties of arrows, and the consecutive rule is quite a tight restriction, so it may not be possible to make a really hard puzzle with it, although having said that, I'm sure some of the usual suspects (you know who you are) will have a go. Before I'd fully got my head around the rules, I started out by centre-marking the ends of the 4-cell lines with 69, and the ends of the rest with 3579. The middles I pencil-marked 1234 and 12345 respectively. This helped me see where there were pinch points. As I converted these pencil-marks to conventional marks, I shaded them E.g. the vertical 4-cell line had 69 on the ends, but it wasn't a 69 pair. Once I worked out it couldn't be a 9 arrow, I converted it to a 1236/123/123/1236 quad and shaded it. This worked quite nicely. I could use shaded cells to eliminate options from the ends, and also from the middles without having to Goodliffe the grid. If neither end could be 3, I could remove 1 from the centre cell, and if I removed 1 and 2 from the centre, I could remove 3 from both ends.

The witness is by far my favorite puzzle game of all time, right next to The Turing Test (far easier but more story based). I can not wait to see how you go about playing it :)

Both of those apps sound like a lot of fun! Personally, I really love when XV/Kropki have a negative constraint, so I definitely would like it if some of the puzzles worked that way!
