B&W 2000
To see start up go to: 6:15 min
The engine measures 24,6 meters in length, 12,5 meter in height and weighs 1400 tons and it produces 22,500 HP.
In the early 1930s, B&W received an order to deliver a large diesel engine. Its purpose was to produce power at H.C. Ørstedsværket by the Copenhagen Sydhavn as a supplement to the existing steam turbine plant.
The engine is so grand, that the building it is situated in, had to be constructed around the engine - meaning, the engine was not fitted to the room but vice versa.
B&W2000 is a double-acting, two-stroke engine. It was put into operation in 1933 and was for more than 30 years, the world’s largest diesel engine. It was designed to supply power to the capital at times when the electricity grid was under the most pressure - in the morning time and at 3-6 pm, when people got off work.
The engine was active until the late 1960s, but it was kept ready until it was disconnected from the electrical grid in 2004. Since the engine was disconnected in the late sixties, it has been started at least once a month and it was always ensured that the starting-air reservoirs were filled. This is the reason why the engine was able to supply power to Copenhagen, back when all of Zealand was hit by a power outage in 2003.
The engine is demonstrated on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month and on special occasions.

This large Diesel engine that went in service in 1933 to generate electricity, when compared to a modern large ship Diesel engine shows how much has changed over the years. One big thing that has changed is the power output for an engine this size. This old large Diesel engine had a rating of 22,500 horsepower. Today there is a large Diesel engine called the Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C that is similar in dimensions to this engine and rated around 107,000 horsepower. This over 4 times the power output for about the same physical size engine.

@@philipmcdonagh1094 Those engines are part of combined cycle or something like that I believe. Hot exhaust gases are used to drive some sort of turbine which is what drives the ship's generator. The name of the game is efficiency (and power). Direct shaft drive increases efficiency over electric drive as well, I'm sure. There are a couple of safety systems on big engines like this: one, turn off the fuel. Two, each cylinder is typically separated by an air gap, so if one cylinder is running away with oil, they can turn off the oil supply to that engine and only have to change one cylinder sleeve and piston.

It's a Double Acting Two Stroke Engine, so each Cylinder has two Power Strokes per Revolution, similar to a Steam Engine. The "Yokes" (dunno how these Things are called in English) on Top of the Engine are smaller Pistons, which act as Slide Valves for the Exhaust Ports in the Cylinder Liners. Many People believe that this is an Opposed Piston Engine, because large OP Two Strokes such as Doxford Engines used similar Yokes for the upper Pistons. You can see similar Piston Sliders below the Cylinders at 09:32. This Engine was built in 1932 by Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen to drive a Generator and supply Electricity at Peak Load; it is a Part of the H.C. Oersted Cogeneration Powerplant which used to be Coal-fired back then and is burning Natural Gas in a Combined Cycle Gas and Steam Turbine Plant today. It used to be the largest Diesel Engine in the World for about 30 Years; you can search for the Museum Ship Cap San Diego to see such an Engine from the early 1960ies. I actually have made a Video of the Cap San Diego myself, and am planning to make a very detailed Video about her Engine in May 2022, and am working on a Video about this Engine here as well, where I explain the same Things as above plus some additional Informations. @@gregculverwell It is indeed a wierd way to do it, but i guess it makes sense since it is double acting. The upper and lower "pistons" are not pistons as such, they are the exhaustvalves that open and closes the exhaust ports at either end of the cylinder. The scavenge air from the roots blowers enters in the middle of the cylinder and it works as an uniflow engine on both sides of the large piston. It's outdated and obsolete design but none the less an amazing piece of machinery. I just wish we had more like these in museums here in Denmark, i love the big "Snow gas engine" and Copper Bessemer double acting gas compressor engines, it always amazes me to see how slow they run. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6gqsVz3Lmtcac.html

@@frontagulus Besides, that Engine is Swiss. Sulzer built the RTA96-C before they were bought by Wärtsilä, and Design on the RT-Flex 96-C started before that as well. The Difference between these two is that the RTA-Series is all mechanical with a Camshaft, while the RT-Flex Series has the Camshaft replaced with Sensors and Hydraulics, and a Common Rail Injection System.
