@@Skywalker20239 Well that’s understandable because the main outline of the Disney canon is extremely mixed up. Plus just look at the toy sales for the sequel characters. It might as well be in the dumpster(actually I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of those toys were sent to the incinerator. Which is a waste). By looking at all the real world evidence you can tell that Disney Star Wars is slowly dying but the love for the original Star Wars is still alive. Yeah, Disney gladly takes the money from them. While I understood the decision to “decanonize” the EU (even though it was was never truly considered canon), I never understood why they not allow stories to still be told in it. Let’s be honest, the people that consume books, comics, ect are usually big Star Wars fans, so most would know EU stories are not canon, so the claim it would confuse people does not make sense. They would make more money allowing it to continue but for some reason they seem to be denying that fact

The original Star Wars EU will never die. It’s the true canon. The majority of fans have enjoyed that content for over a decade. It’s massive universe is a bit similar to Tolkien’s world(in size I mean). Each story you read(or play in a game) gets you hungry for more. Plus it showed more respect to the Skywalker family tree. My biggest problem is that no matter how good any of the new stuff is, it will always come at the cost of having it tied to the Disney films. As far as I am concerned, its a poisoned well. Any good branch growing from a tree is meaningless if the tree itself is rotted. For Cal Kestis, we get Jake Skywalker. For Andor, we get Deadbeat Solo. And so it goes. It grows out of contempt rather than the love present in the EU.

@gameragodzilla
@gameragodzilla Жыл бұрын
Yeah, and that issue actually does affect even the good stuff. One criticism I do have of the Respawn Jedi games is the fact that the stories are largely inconsequential to the greater galaxy. Yeah, Darth Vader shows up a few times, but by and large if the stories never occurred, the galaxy would remain the same. But that's not Respawn's fault, because Disney canon is such a goddamn mess that they can't make a story too consequential without potentially stepping on someone else's toes, so they just have their own corner of the galaxy to play with and be really good without significant ties to anything else. Contrast that with The Force Unleashed, which is ultimately the story of the founding of the Rebel Alliance, even tying with other EU works such as the Purge Troopers being an early form of the Dark Trooper project or Garm Bel Ilbus from the Thrawn Trilogy showing up as one of the rebel leaders. They even managed to give Galen Marek retroactive legacy in films by having the Rebel symbol be his family crest. While a blatant retcon, it does mean he isn't a complete ghost in the later timeline unlike what Ahsoka often can feel like with the fact there's absolutely zero mention of her existence in either ROTS or the OT despite her massive importance. But that just shows how much better the old Star Wars timeline was planned. Again, it was never perfect and there are always a few retcons here and there, but Disney's canon is messier now than the Star Wars EU ever was prior to The Clone Wars (and even then, The Clone Wars is now moved over to Disney canon, so as far as I'm concerned, it's not a part of Legends anymore).

Yeah you’re spot on. That’s what makes Luke Skywalkers heroic entrance in the Mandalorian a bit sad. All roads lead to the Big Lebowski in the Last Jedi. Actually the entire sequel trilogy makes every effort of the rebellion(original trilogy) kind of pointless if you think about it. The point of George Lucas‘s sequel trilogy is to rebuild everything and make it better than before(we didn’t see that in the 2019 film).

The EU, warts and all, is superior to most of the Disney offerings. Yes Rogue One is good. Yes Rebels is good. Jedi Fallen Order is very good. Still The EU showed the main heroes striving and prospering. Luke became a leader, father and teacher when he rebuilt The Jedi. Leia and Han actually had a stable relationship that survived tragic events. There are memorable villains, like Thrawn, that Disney is now using because of their popularity. Then there's The Old Republic stuff, like Star Wars The Old Republic mmo and it's multitude of stories. Disney hasn't reached those levels of storytelling and it's blatant.

They are the same type of people that scream for equality, yet go out of their way to destroy whatever came first to prop up what is current. That includes, characters, agenda, politics, etc. They write articles, or make videos that condemn, bash, and out right slander OT, or prequel movies/characters. They will label you if you criticize KK, or anything that's current Disney. It's crazy, because they're no better than the other side that constantly screams "woke", or nonsense like that. However, the more this current era of Disney reigns the more and more I see agenda importance over good storytelling. It's sad really. Because these type of people have power. Both sides of the extreme. Whereas people like myself, who reside in the middle, sit and watch all of it burn. Shitty part is that I don't want to watch Star Wars burn. I want it to be good. For decades cbr was one of the best websites in the comic book space. They collected links, commissioned articles on a lot of very nerdy and wonderful subjects, and provided a message board home for comic fans. Then, sometime in the last decade they got bought out and all the good aspects of cbr (With the single exception of the message board, which is, thank God, still there.) were gone. Overnight it became a clickbait farm, and over the years it's become worse and worse. This article was generated by one of their few remaining writers to trend on Twitter or be shared on Facebook. Being controversial and getting people to talk about it is the point. I doubt the author will even remember they wrote it six months from now.

Fun fact : In order for the new characters to work Disney had to neuter, kill or destroy the old, original characters. The EU never had to do that. Instead of taking away it added, spun forward and continued. Mara Jade, the Twins, Kyp Durron, Kyle Katarn and all the others worked with their stories running intertwined and combined with with the OT characters. That alone should tell wich is the „better“ canon.

But now with the new interrations, they are able to enjoy and insert themselves into the fandom, but instead the new is being rejected by a large portion of the existing fanbase so they feel the need to defend and validate the new because they don't want it to be like what it used to.

It can basically be boiled down to "Hey, that thing you love is bad, you should stop liking it and like this thing I like instead." Yes, they're both in the same franchise, but even so, that's a pretty terrible argument and certainly isn't going to convince those who love that thing you don't love to like what you like. Like, why can't we just be like "Hey, you like what you like, I like what I like, we don't all like the same things, and that's okay"? It's not that hard. More fans of more things should try that more often. Fighting about it is just tiresome, and hurts any fandom that kind of fighting is part of. Giving honest criticism and having discussions about what's good and bad about things like Disney Star Wars or the EU is great stuff, and should be encouraged within fandoms. But this fighting and trying to kill what you don't like or belittling people for liking parts of it that you don't is so stupid.

There were bad individual stories that cropped up from time to time within the EU, and I didn't always love the overall direct it took, but never anything bad enough that it could ruin the entire thing. What Disney *should* to is reopen the EU/"Legends" to new content, and just have two separate versions of the Star Wars universe going. You know, exactly the same way the MCU never erased the Marvel Comics continuity (also Disney-owned properties). Of course, I know *why* Disney isn't doing that. They're afraid that Legends will be significantly more popular. And that the biggest name authors that do Star Wars novels will prefer to write Legends rather than "canon" books.

Jamie Parker had made a very dangerous and dishonest conflation. In the sub title, Jamie says SW fans should embrace "new stories", this phrasing suggests that the SW fandom simply dislikes Disney SW because its "new". But of course the real reason, as I'm sure we can all gander, is fans aren't against "new stories", they're opposed to bad stories. There's a difference between someone saying "oh nothing new is ever good" and making a calculated assessment on what a new SW project by Disney will be like. What I mean is Disney has shown a clear pattern in their method of story telling, and because of how prevalent it is, fans are simply exhausted and have been conditioned to think that Disney won't change, because so far they really haven't. Fans embrace Legends, not because it's "older", but simply because those stories were well-written. People got flack, and in some cases still do, for liking the prequels, which in the early 2000s was because it was "new", but those movies have aged well, again because they are good stories. The sequal trilogy, Mando season 3, Book of Boba and presumably the Acolyte aren't being seen as bad because they are new, but because they aren't good stories. Legends, Clone Wars, Battlefront, Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor and the first 2 trilogies, showed what SW can and should be, Disney Era SW show us what happens when the "what if" is for all the wrong reasons

The main reason that the Expanded Universe is a barrier to entry for the new Disney cannon, particularly the sequel trilogy, is that the EU told a story of post Endor Star Wars that many fans prefer to what Disney has given us. I prefer a storyline where the New Republic struggled in the beginning but grew strong and overcame its struggles. The Disney Cannon has the Empire decide to fade away and allow the New Republic to grow weak and then dominate it. Hmmm...when I say that, it makes the Empire sound pretty clever. Still, as much as I enjoyed The Mandalorian (even the third season), I can't help liking the somewhat disjointed EU to the Disney Canon.

If you're interested in where the sith "Rule of two" came from in the Old Republic, the Darth Bane trilogy is amazing. It is a bit darker version of Star Wars though, definitely more like the Plagueis novel than a lot of the young-adult stuff. Lots of good stuff in the EU.

Also if I were to say about what created the formation of the rebel alliance came from? It came from Galen Marek aka Starkiller. Apprentice of Darth Vader. And someone who wanted to root out the rebels and started to form the rebel alliance out of exposing traitors and decided to save the rebel alliance and with his sacrifice against Palpatine, he birthed the rebel alliance. And the lothal ghost crew joins the forming rebel alliance. And maybe the fact that Ezra brought Thrawn to the unknown regions is how the rebel alliance didn’t suffer defeat. Because Ezra teleported Thrawn to the unknown regions. And rex does join the battle of Endor

I attended a Con last year and one kid had a small booth set up with a sign reading ... "The Disney Star Wars Sequels are the best of Star Wars, change my mind (*)". And, as is usual, the asterisk caught my attention. So I asked why it was there and he added in "Well, only the new movies ... not the rest of the stuff". When I asked how much of the EU he'd read he said ... "None, it's got too many books and stuff.". . Seriously? How can he claim that the Sequel Trilogy is "the best" when he's never experienced ALL of the rest? . I'm in my 50s and I've been a Star Wars fan from day one! I have dozens of novels, reference books, graphic novels and all of the old comic-book series ... I've collected the toys, games, cards and tchotchkes for over 40 YEARS and this kid, who's watched 3 movies and maybe one cartoon series wants to tell me he knows more about Star Wars than I do? If you can't name all of Han & Leia's kids, don't know who Mara Jade, Talon Karrde and Kip Durron are, or tell me the significance of the Yuuzhan Vong then keep your mouth SHUT! Yes, it's gate-keeping ... deal with it. Go into a sports bar and proclaim yourself an expert on Football without knowing who Broadway Joe and Mean Joe Green are and see how well you're received. We've put in the time, put in the effort and put in the imagination to EARN our stripes ... these "new fans" are shallow, ignorant and disrespectful and WE DON'T NEED THEM!

I hate when people refuse to explore the EU on the basis of its quantity. I've read many books and comics from the classic canon and I can tell you in all honesty that I've barely scratched the surface. It has had zero impact on my ability to enjoy the stories. I probably will never read every Star Wars story from the pre-Disney canon, and I'm fine with that. I'll keep finding material that interests me and revisit the ones that I love. It's a big universe. That's part of the fun of Star Wars.

@@terrified057t4 Don't listen to him. He has an irrational hatred of Filoni and for example blames him for the EU continuity created thanks to the Clone Wars when in reality it was George and Filoni was keeping him in check. For example, everybody complained about the New Mandalorians breaking the lore. Those people ignored two things. First the New Mandalorians are established as not being all Mandalorians and the storyline was set earlier in the Clone Wars than some past EU works showed with The Essential Atlas even mentioned a coup at some point led to the leaders in charge seen in the Republic Commando series set at the tail end of the war. They also ignored the show making direct ties to past EU works in that storyline specifically having the more warrior like Mandalorians be Death Watch a splinter group introduced in Jango Fett: Open Seasons and their leader is in the same clan as their founder and leader from that comic. He also frequently brings up Malachor being a round planet planet in Rebels Season 2 because he doesn't the Malachor system had more than inhabited planet and only one of those was reduced to an asteroid field. For a supposed EU fan he forget this was established in Star Wars: The Old Republic where one of the other inhabited planets in the Malachor system (all of which are named Malachor followed by a number) was a plot point in the Jedi Consular's class story.

@@emberfist8347 Yeah, I can understand not liking Filoni, but making him a strawman to blame for everything bad is just plain dumb. Like the New Mandos and the capitol being some dumb sci-fi bs of a dome city on a salt flat, we only ever see that so it's likely that's just where the New Mandos set up meanwhile the areas we see in Republic Commando, being the far north of the planet with a beautiful tundra, can coexist with the salt flats.

Even the prequels, which were largely reviled when they came out (and have a somewhat better reputation now it seems), couldn't kill Star Wars, and the love people have for it. Only Disney's raping of Star Wars has brought it to the brink of death. And they did that by deliberately communicating to the older fans that "this new Star Wars is not for you."
