Clearly pH is a factor. The sodas are all acidic, even the Perrier due to CO₂.
@Abion47
@Abion47 3 жыл бұрын
The carbonic acid formed naturally in the Perrier gives the drink a pH of around 6. Compared to the acidity of root beer (4.5) and lemon juice (2), that's minuscule (reminder that neutral is 7 and that the pH scale is logarithmic). I'd wager the suspended pockets of CO2 gas creating bubbles (i.e. stress risers) in the cement has a much bigger effect on its integrity than the small amount of incidental acid in the Perrier.

First of all, concrete should be placed in cube or cylinder molds. After 24 hours, the concrete should be removed completely from molds and placed in a tub of water at 75ish F. Ideally you want them soaking for 4 weeks, but they should get to 75%-90% cured after 1 week if you really need answers now. Also you should you a hydraulic press with the mold cushioned between rubber pads. Honestly it would be easier to look up the ACI or AASHTO concrete testing standards and copy from there.

Cement is a base reaction, so when you put any chemical that is acidic (carbonic acid, lemon juice ) it neutralizes the reaction and the bonding is weak. I think ( this is just spitballing) that the difference between your 2 sugar trials is whether or not they were totally dissolved. Although the one had more sugar, it was probably totally dissolved since it was mixed into the mixture, whereas the other was added after and may not have dissolved totally, thereby becoming inclusions into the concrete and weakening it.

Yep, mainly calcium oxide, which is turned to calcium hydroxide with the addition of water and finally calcium carbonate in a reaction with atmospheric CO2 as it cures. Citric acid in lemon juice just neutralises the oxide to calcium citrate so the initial reaction with water can't happen

My two cents as a geology major. Cement is made of lime (from limestone) as a major ingredient, also known as the mineral calcite. Calcite will fizz and react strongly with nearly every acid even weak acids such as vinegar and lemon juice. I am not surprised anything acidic would ruin it. You could try adding magnesium powder into the mix though, I am curious if it will form a stronger bond.

Sugar slows down the set time of concrete. What probably happened is when you added it first it was able to slow down the set time. Most likely by adding the sugar after it was mixed you interrupted the setting and cause it to set unevenly making it weaker. Just a theory though.

my question is, if you ruin the bonding of cement with lemon juice. Say for example; in an emergency you needed to for some reason prevent the cement from bonding. would you be able to use another substance or perhaps even just a large enough amount of water. to sort of decontaminate the cement of the acid, and reuse the same cement in water per usual, to properly bond the cement again???

Soap will make the concrete not cure, as it will bind the concrete particles away from the water, making it weak. If you mix concrete with water contaminated with cement, like that used to wash the tools clean, it will also not cure well, cement is a product that needs very clean water to mix, and contaminants will reduce strength. Surgical cements will be mixed up with sterile distilled water for this, amongst the other bacterial contamination reason, so they can reach full strength.

Maybe the issue is more the acid mixed with carbonation. For adding sugar after... Maybe it was an air thing? Like adding it from the start caused the sugar to fully dissolve into the water while mixing, but adding the sugar after caused weak points because the mixture wasn't wet enough?

Try making reinforced concrete paver. Try reinforcing with fiberglass, grass, toothpicks, hair, coconut fiber, etc.

You should drop the weight from set if even arbitrary distances for uniform comparisons.

I would recommend weight vs volume, it’s possible that the differing viscosities are due to the amount of liquid added.

Maybe the sugar added in at the end was still granular? Awesome video, though. I needed this info for a project I was thinking of starting soon.

you should try vacuuming cement just after mixed to see if it's stronger or not, essentially trying to pull all the air out and then let it set

It would also boil away all of the water, meaning it will never cure or set.

I think an interesting one to look at is cement that can cure underwater (portland or roman) the difference between regular cement and which is stronger

sugar inhibits the curing process it will cure it just needs much more time . This is commonly used in the oil and gas industry for some projects when you need more time for cement to flow to certain places.

Do the soap suds style aircrete vs. carbonated water and see if there's a weight and strength difference.

I know that in Australia when we want exposed gravel driveways we spray a sugar water mix over the trowelled concrete and it stops the top layer from curing so a couple of hours later when the concrete has firmed up a bit the top is still soft and you can broom and hose it away leaving exposed gravel
