My theory on why Devil Fruits taste awful is because when a fruit becomes a devil fruit, it won’t decay like a normal fruit but it will still get rotten, Sabo ate a two year old rotten fruit and same with the CP9. So if you ate Slimey fruit right after he died, it would taste like a apple.

Based on what we see here, its original form was an apple.

Well according to one piece logic when devil fruit eater dies, their devil fruit power appears somewhere else, as we can see it manifests in random fruit that is in the world, so that means that if you own a fruit plantation you have higher chances of coming across a devil fruit respawning in one of the fruits in your plantation since there are a lot of them.
