One Row Stripes Without Cutting the Yarn // Technique Tuesday

This video demonstrates how to work one-row stripes in flat knitting without cutting and rejoining the yarn each time. It also demonstrates how to work two-row stripes so that one yarn is carried up each selvedge, which balances the bulk of the carried yarn. This technique is also useful for alternating between two hand-painted skeins.

The scales have fallen from my eyes - this solves a problem I faced when planning to knit a striped cardigan, wanting to keep one edge from getting all of the color changes. I feel so much more confident know to go back to my UFO and reassess it. Thanks, Rox!

This is really useful! I had worked out the one-row technique on my own, but I'd never have thought to turn the work around for the two-rows technique!

Thank you for those tips, I was going to skip this technique because I thought I “knew” how to carry the yarn but you gave me some new ways to do stripes and I wanted to do stripe patterns but they were too cumbersome- now I really want to knit stripes thank you!!

I have learned about this technique from a knitting stitch dictionary by Burda in Germany from the year 1981 which includes a four stich cable with two colors

i have found a honeycomb stitch from a 1947 pattern from vogue that would work great as a "mosaic" type of colorwork but it's a (kinda) 2 rows repeat so i needed this type of tricks (otherwise i was about to work it in the round)

Hi Roxanne, I’m wondering if you could give me advice on knitting stripes in the round and avoiding the jog. I’m knit group a hat using 2 colors and using the Fabonacci striping sequence of 1,2,3,5 repeat. To avoid the jog I’m using the lifted stitch from below however it’s not ideal and want to know if you can suggest a better way. Thank you, Anna

hello Roxanne, I've been following you from Flanders and I have a question, can you use this technique in 4 rows striping? or more rows between two colours? I would like to knit the belley of a snake and it has 6 rows of one colour and two rows of another.

With an even number of rows, you are always switching yarns at the same edge. If you can carry the yarn neatly up that edge (maybe catching the waiting yarn every time the other one returns to that edge), then you likely wouldn't need to cut the yarns. Otherwise, you might need to cut only the yarn that has to wait for more than 2 rows.
