For me the abrupt ending works. From our original crew's perspective nothing much happened. For them it's just another day and the sudden ending really drives that home.

Yeah, I agree. We, the audience, are the only ones who know what happened. I always felt that the sudden cut back is so jarring that the “WTF” feeling really makes it stick that the crew is oblivious to the whole thing, almost like WE are the displaced ones.

I think the abrupt ending is fine, but I do agree with them that it could have been better. Imagine the D blows up and the shockwave is what pushes the C into the rift, which collapses and we see a blank star field. Then the camera pans 180 degrees to an intact D, then the bridge scene. The destruction of the D is what literally the difference between success and failure, not just buying them time.

If this had been a movie, Worf definitely would have been the captain on one of those Birds of Prey, possibly the main villain. That could have been pretty cool. On the other hand, the same writers and producers made Generations and Insurrection, so I can't say it would have improved much. I think the reason for the hard cut back to the "normal" bridge after the other ship went back in time through the rift, was deliberately done to communicate to the audience, the fact that the present timeline crew did not experience anything out of the ordinary once the timeline had been repaired. They had no knowledge of the any of the events that otherwise taken place in the alternate timeline, or even any reason to suspect anything had even changed at that moment. From their perspective (barring that one communication from Guinan), everything was uninterrupted and business as usual as it had been for the past two decades. So you could argue, perhaps the producers sacrificed something more visually dramatic and impactful, for something more mundane, as they believed it would communicate the story better to the people watching the episode.

I agree, 100%. But i would also argue that the proper ending was more visually interesting. Building up to a big climax, and then just breaking it off abruptly, and back to normal. That would have a much greater impact on me than what Josh and Alex want. Reminds me of how 'I Want You/She's So Heavy' cuts off abruptly prior to Here Comes the Sun on Abbey Road. It's so impactful to have that abrupt cut of noise, and then the gentle oncoming of Here Comes the Sun.

I think this story is a great example of why you shouldn't retcon bad stories because, while Skin of Evil wasn't the worst Season 1 had to offer, Code of Honor exists after all, it sure wasn't a very good episode and an even worse last outing for the character of Tasha Yar. However, without it, this episode wouldn't hit as hard. The alternate Timeline Tasha finding out that she died for nothing in the original timeline and deciding that if she has to die, she rather do it on her own terms for something that matters is a great bit of character drama. Also, I know you wanted the episode to end more spectacularly, but I really like how it ends with Guinan asking Geordie about Tasha because, as Guinan pointed out in the episode, she never knew the "real" Tasha, and it's great to see her take an interest in connecting with the crew over their love for a fallen comrade.

Keep in mind, even though TNG was a made for syndication show, it still followed the Nielsen Ratings system rules for setting advertising prices, so twice each season (generally in November and May) was what was called "sweeps Week," when each network (or local channel) would show big audience interest episodes in order to bump up their Nielsen ratings so they could bump up their ad prices. One way to bring in the (audience) numbers was to broadcast the 'hook' during the show's preview. This episode was one of those cases. The preview made it undeniable that Tasha would be back in this episode in the hopes the audience would tune in to find out HOW Tasha was back?

Not quite enemies nor even frienemies but the Battle-Hardened Picard doesn't seem to rely on or value the opinions of his first officer as much as he did in the "true" timeline. I like one theory on Troi's absence. In "Skin of Evil", Troi was in the shuttlecraft that crashed and set off the events of the episode. In the new timeline, Picard never authorized the rescue mission, probably because of the war. Troi dies, Tasha is not killed by Armus, and a rift develops between Picard and Riker.

Since you probably avoid write ups. Crosby left because after being featured in early Season One episodes, she felt her character started taking a back seat. Of course, Ronald D. Moore wasn't on the Star Trek team yet. With two many actors on the show fighting for screen time, Crosby asked to leave thinking it'll give the other characters more story opportunities. And I think she asked that her death be meaningless. Great story on the the script (edited to avoid any blurb on other possible scripts) Among the scripts submitted by freelance or aspiring writers was one by Trent Christopher Ganino. Ganino's speculative script, submitted to the office of pre-production associate Eric A. Stillwell in April 1989, was titled "Yesterday's Enterprise". The story involved the Enterprise-D's response to a crisis in the Golecian sector and an encounter with Enterprise-C, which had been destroyed 18 years earlier. The crew of the Enterprise-C is in awe of the newer ship's technology, and Picard is confronted with whether to reveal to his guests their ultimate fate. An Enterprise-C ensign accidentally discovers the fate of his vessel and panics, requiring Worf and Riker to capture him after he attempts to escape. When Golecian warships attack, Picard defends the Enterprise-C using the same maneuver that caused the vessel's destruction in the past. The ensign goes back to his ship, which returns to the past and its certain destruction. Due to the backlog of scripts, the processing of draft submissions could take anywhere from weeks to a year. Ganino's script was "logged" on May 2 and first read later that month by Richard Manning, a co-producer on the writing staff. Manning commented that the draft was "not horrible, not particularly original, but good in spots, lousy in others". This review was enough to keep the script in circulation. Executive story editor Melinda Snodgrass read Ganino's speculative script for "Yesterday's Enterprise" in June and attached a post-it note declaring the story an "interesting idea". A "coverage" of the script, which outlined the plot and provided creative feedback, was written in August. This analysis called the script a "good effort by an unrepresented writer", and considered the script's weak characterization and plot issues correctable. The main issue was whether the producers wanted to do a show with time travel. Ganino and Stillwell were asked to do a rewrite. They were particular fans of two episodes from the original Star Trek series, "Mirror, Mirror" and "The City on the Edge of Forever", and wanted to combine elements from them for a Next Generation episode. After Ganino and Stillwell pitched him the new script, Piller suggested to producer Rick Berman that the story, not the script, be purchased. In a meeting, Piller told Ganino that he wanted to make changes to the story, which included the addition of Tasha Yar. Fearing that what they considered a better story would be lost if the changes were made to "Yesterday's Enterprise", Stillwell talked to Piller and pitched their Guardian of Forever story. While intrigued by elements of the story, Piller felt the use of the Guardian was a "gimmick" and wanted The Next Generation to stand on its own. Instead, Piller suggested that they merge the two stories, with Stillwell and Ganino sharing writing credit. Piller suggested that the Enterprise crew would immediately undergo a transformation due to the presence of the older Enterprise, and that Guinan would be integral to the realization that something was wrong. Ganino and Stillwell were given two weeks to complete their new story. Ganino and Stillwell completed their new combined story in about a week. The writers spent hours each day at Stillwell's apartment working over every detail; they felt pressured to write a story Piller would find acceptable, as they wanted to have the opportunity to write the teleplay. The story treatment was turned in on October 10. Piller immediately decided to purchase the story and distributed the treatment to the writing staff while he discussed changes. Piller felt that Data's romantic feelings for Tasha Yar were over the top, and that an alien probe which served as a central part of the story was a cheat in terms of resolving Picard's dilemma. The writer wanted Ganino and Stillwell to enhance Guinan's role and to find another character arc for Tasha Yar. A revised treatment was submitted on October 29, incorporating Piller's changes. The writers were not involved in development of the teleplay. They were each paid the Writers Guild minimum of $2400. The production of the episode, originally scheduled for January 1990, was moved to December 1989 to accommodate the filming availability of Crosby and Whoopi Goldberg, who played Guinan. The task of writing and polishing the new treatment in half the time fell upon writer Ronald D. Moore, who submitted his first draft on November 9. Moore's script removed the alien probe and made the alternate universe militaristic, with the Federation and the Klingons at war. Some characters, such as Troi, appeared only briefly at the beginning of the episode to allow more screen time for the guest characters. The beat sheet for the episode, which detailed characters and scenes, was distributed on November 27. Due to time constraints, a team of writers was assigned to write the teleplay. In addition to the story credit to Ganino and Stillwell, Moore, Ira Steven Behr, Hans Beimler and Richard Manning would work on the teleplay, and Piller would provide the finishing touches. Because the Writers Guild would not allow more than three staff writers to appear in the credits (four after a special waiver was granted), Piller agreed to not feature his name in the credits. A partial first draft was submitted on November 30 so that preproduction for the episode could commence. The altered timeline provided a chance to show the Enterprise crew in a much more dramatic and human light than would be allowable in a normal episode. Behr explained that since the original timeline was to be restored, the writers had the freedom to include more action. "Even though it was an alternate universe, [Moore] and I got all excited because we realized we were going to kill everyone on screen", he said. Michael Okuda and Rick Sternbach submitted technical memos regarding the type of anomaly that might drag the Enterprise-C through time, and suggested interstellar, super-dense strings as a possibility. The first draft teleplay was completed by December 4, and a preproduction meeting was held the same day. Given the scale of the story, various departments argued over costs and what items could be cut to reduce the budget. The final draft was finished and submitted on December 8.

Shout out to the Ambassador Class (the Enterprise C), one of my absolute favorite designs. To me it looks like the perfect mashup of the Constitution Refit, the Excelsior, and the Galaxy Class, really fitting into the evolution of those ships perfectly. I know that it was designed by Andrew Probert to look different and they didn't have time to build it as he saw it, so what we got was a compromise design where changes were made so the model could be built more quickly (circles instead of ovals for example). However I actually prefer what we got to what he intended, as I feel what he intended just looked like a smaller Galaxy Class whereas what we got looks like an older design, which it should given when it was built in-universe.

Garret back to sickbay, her hand goes up towards her badge (as though she's going to tap it again to close communications) but then stops midway and drops again. Software programmer Phil Ferand noticed this back when the episode was first broadcast, which got him curious if there's a definite protocol about ending communicator conversations with the badges (analogous to flipping the communicator closed in TOS), and that led him to notice other oddities of all sorts in previous episodes...and the next thing you know, he'd founded the *Star Trek Nitpickers' Guild* and published two volumes detailing all the glitches and errors to be found in all of TNG, and a third volume for TOS.

The moment the Enterprise-C returned through the anomaly the Enterprise-D returned to the exact moment they first detected the ship emerging. So of course it was a hard cut back to reality with all the crew members in the exact places they were standing the moment the initial change occurred. As far as 'our' crew is concerned, none of the events of the episode ever happened.

I always felt the Riker/ Picard changed relationship was one of the BEST (subtle) touches. In the regular timeline, Picard MAY still be a "bit" aloof/ standoffish, but he has CLEARLY "warmed up" to Riker & they are "Friends"! Not just fellow officers. In the wartime reality, that "connection" NEVER formed, so they are MUCH more "antagonistic" (but not unprofessional) & COLD towards each other.

The whole reason that the episode ended with the abrupt time shift was because once the Enterprise C reentered the time rift the time line was reset back to normal and the events we saw in the episode never happened for the crew as it is now. So they have no memory of it because nothing happened other than they found a temporal rift thought they detected something coming through the rift then it was gone and the rift closed. For the crew of the Enterprise D literally almost no time went by except for the few moments when they discovered the rift before the Enterprise C emerged and then the few moments after the C had already gone back and the rift closed. Perfect ending.

Yeah, I feel complaining about the previews and saying the context doesn't matter doesn't add up, is just saying you don't care about the context and you feel like you're right regardless of reality. You're absorbing content in a completely different way than it was created and consumed 30 years ago. There was no on-demand or DVR back then, so they were less concerned about "spoiling" elements of the episode and more interested in ensuring they got the ratings to you know... continue creating the show, which was not guaranteed at the time. At the time it would have been no different from spoiling something in the episode by showing it in the episode. The event IS the preview, because without it, far fewer people would have seen it. The episode is just the execution of it. I really enjoy watching their reactions, but they get stuck on some of their opinions without thinking some things through.

I think a strong reason why Picard trusted Guinan, is that it offered hope in a hopeless situation. Picard said that they were losing. Returning meant certain death, but remaining wasn't really that much better. Yes. It was a big sacrifice. Yes it was almost unbeilable that their reality was 'wrong'... But it was also possibly the best news he had heard from a long time. And it did make sense that having a spaceship out of their "time" was causing a problem.

There are certain definitive TNG episodes, and "Yesterday's Enterprise" is one of them. This episode is nearly perfect - well paced, well directed, well acted. It leaves you wanting more, but it hits every note it needs to. As you've noted, Season Three is when the show really hit its stride. The script was developed as a means to bring Denise Crosby back, as she really wanted Tasha Yar to have a better ending than being randomly killed by a pissed off tar monster. Apparently, the script went through several iterations, eventually landing on the premise that a ship from the past travels through time, inadvertently creating a timeline where the Klingons and the Federation are at war. One of the most impressive parts of the show is how they redesigned everything to make the Enterprise actually seem like a warship. And the characters are subtly changed as well - harder, more military. When the Klingons demand the Enterprise surrender, Picard comments, "That'll be the day." Patrick Stewart commented that this was a direct stab at Season One and Two Picard, who always seemed to be surrendering. Without giving too much away for the future, the Enterprise-C was not the ship that saved Worf at Khitomer. However, the sacrifice of the Enterprise-C at Narendra-3 led to the Federation aiding the Klingons in other Romulan attacks - leading to Worf's rescue and the eventual peace treaty.

The original story featured Captain Richard Garrett. The "Garrett" was named after a Pizza place the writer liked. That same writer was discussing the plot when someone commented on how there weren't any female captains, so "Richard" was changed to "Rachel," with no other changes to the character.

I think you missed how critical and unavoidable it was that the Enterprise-D was about to explode from the WC containment failing. I think the way it was shot was best. Picard taking over for fallen crew personally with only Data still up, providing situational exposition. There was no futile attempt to abandon ship. Picard knew they were all going to die anyway, so Tasha's lines of, "it could be the seconds or minutes that change history" come back as it is the Enterprise-D which is fought to the last second to protect the Enterprise-C. We don't need to see any other characters in the last seconds of the battle, because it has been Picard who has had to make all the decisions to get us here, so we follow them to the last seconds before he and the whole crew of the Enterprise-D will die.

Back when this first aired, I was blown away and very emotionally affected by the story. The scenes with Tasha and Guinan and the following scene with Tasha and Picard were very moving ( made even more so by the musical underscore ) and among my favorites in the series. Although I was not as disappointed by the abrupt transition back to the “prime” timeline as you guys were, I did think there was a missed opportunity. I thought it would have been really dramatic as the Enterprise - C is entering the time vortex, to show the Enterprise - D starting to be completely destroyed and blowing up. Then make the abrupt cut to Picard on the bridge which would have still been jarring but in an “Oh thank god!” kind of way.

On the topic of the show's atmosphere: I think you'll come to appreciate the general atmosphere of TNG eventually. The brightness of the ship makes it feel very comfortable and like home, which is pretty unique to TNG as a television show. It feels safe. DS9 and the following series do lean in to cinematic lighting and atmosphere and it works great for those shows! It just isn't the kind of show TNG is. TNG is the starfleet idealism. Every following show, even though they still have the idealism baked in, show that idealism under pressure and stress.

I think the ending is great the way it is, but I do have one idea that might be interesting. What if we got a shot of Guinan as the timeline shifted back. We could linger with her as she wonders if everything worked as intended. When she contacts the bridge it only cuts to them right as Picard responds reassuring Guinan as well as the audience. I don't think it's necessary, but it's a thought. Either way glad you enjoyed this episode. It's definitely one of the all time greats.

But there's no need to get mad over them wanting a different transition between timelines. I was nervous that they might think it was mid or not even like it at all after what they have said they like/don't like about TNG. If the only complaint is that they wanted the screen to blackout and flicker to hammer home the timeline being reset, it's not that big a deal. Also this episode, as you may have guessed by the wall of writing credits, it had to get a LOT of passes and it was kind of a scramble to get it together and no one really thought it would turn out as great as it did, they were just happy to have a shooting script ready by the deadline which was a close call on this episode. As it is, when the Enterprise C entered the rift the change back to the original timeline was instantaneous with no one but Guinan knowing anything happened. AND...It has to be an abrupt ending. Data: "if they succeed, we will not even realise these events occurred (talking about the new timeline)..." In regard to what you would like to change about the episode there were these: 1. Time and budget did leave some ideas out of the final episode. They originally wanted more character deaths: Data being electrocuted, and Wesley being decapitated. 2. The transition effect was added in post and was unscripted, due to time constraints they neglected the second transition effect. Originally, both transitions were supposed to be a straight cut. This is one of the top 10 episodes of all of TNG, and I'm glad you enjoyed this fan favorite.
