One tip to avoid Craftsman Chainsaw from bogging down

The carburetor on this Craftsman chainsaw was cleaned out last year along with changing the fuel lines & filter. It was running & cutting great until it just started to bog down. The cause, the fuel filter fell off & caused the carburetor to clog again. Just a quick check when fueling would have prevented this.

I have an aftermarket carburetor and air filter housing made to fit with the aftermarket carb that I purchased for a Poulan 2150 that is the same. I picked up this exact saw for $15 and threw new lines and a filter and Primer bulb on. Started right up, and I got it tuned. Cut down two decent size dead pine trees with it. Still have the extra carb and air filter housing for when I need it as the poulan has an air leak and revs too high. For those asking, with any fuel line/filter install cut the tip angled for about an inch as this will give you plenty of line to start it and feed it in, long needle hose pliers will pull it in the rest of the way. Pull line in through the gas hole throw your filter on and pull the slack back through to seat the filter in tank.

The Poulan and Craftsman saws that I worked on have the same build. For the homeowner or as a back up saw for the "PROS" you cannot beat them for the money. Not as rugged as the commercial saws but a fraction of the price & well worth it. As you experienced for a few dollars you were up & running and got the job done. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Mick you may just have to adjust the carburetor. But first check the fuel lines & primer bulb for cracks. Check for air leaks around the seals & the carburetor itself make sure it is tightly secured. Check the spark plug it may have to be changed plus you will be able to see how it was running, too lean--too rich. You may have to install a new carb kit after cleaning the carb or a new carb. Keep me posted. Stay safe, Joe Z

I have a friend that bought a Craftsman chain years ago and used it very little , he suppose to be bringing to me to check out . Will run and then die , told him in learning that if I can just put him a replacement carb online it would probably be in his favor - but I'll give it a cleaning first . He's a good friend so don't plan on charging him any Labor . I got broke in on a Sears Craftsman weed eater of it lasting two years before putting in the shop long before I started working on small engines . Put it in the shop they charged me $40.00 and got it home and had to run it with the choke sticking halfway out to make it run right . Took it back and a month later got it back and with the same problem , sold it to my neighbor for the repair cost and went to the stihl store and bought a new stihl and have never looked back . People need to know you get what you pay for , if you've had luck with Craftsman power equipment then your one of the lucky one's . I have a bad taste in my month from them - no - no more for this old boy.

Thank you for sharing. You are right telling your friend about a replacement carb. The shop you took yours to years ago should have suggested that to you at least the second time you went in. Some times no matter how well you clean these carbs even with a new kit they still will not run right. I know what you mean about getting a "bad taste". Not with this particular saw but with other products and some were very expensive. Pleasure having you visiting & commenting, thank you again. Joe Z

I agree with the others . . . . . good video. I was a bit disappointed when you came back with " well guys". I Would've very much liked to have seen how you got the filter out and put back in to the tank and if their are any possible pitfalls or things to beware of or tips. Yeah, I know, it can't be to hard to figure it out. I just have to search for those answers now. Just the same, thanks for the video.

Saaki, I hope this video this was of some help .And thank You for watching and taking the time to comment. When putting the filter on just push it into the fuel line. One pitfall is the fuel line itself, if it is deteriorating it will either split when pushing the filter back in or will hold it for a short time & then the filter will fall out.If this is the case you have to change the fuel line I have a video showing this. You can easily get to it by clicking onto the card in the upper right hand corner in this video. Let me know if I can be of help. Stay safe, Joe Z

My tip to you is to stop using fuel that contains Ethanol. It eats up tje fuel lines and puts a hurtin on small engines thanks for the videos
@JOEZEP54
@JOEZEP54 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Leo, Thank you for visiting & taking the time to comment. Your tip is a good one. Gas stations in my area do not sell Ethanol free gas. The only choice to use Ethanol free gas is to buy it i n the Big Box Stores or Dealerships in 32 oz cans at 5.96 a can = 23.84 a gallon. For me it just does not pay. I had this saw for ten years. By emptying it out when not in use I only had to replace the lines once and clean the carb twice. Although I believe it is time for a new carb now. Stay well, Joe Z

One more thing: people need to use 93 octane without ethanol and use stil-bill fuel stabilizer and I also use sea foam . This way you don't have to worry about fuel sitting in your small engines during the off season - food for thought for all of your small engines .
@JOEZEP54
@JOEZEP54 3 жыл бұрын
Your advice is right on. Unfortunately in the county I live in they do not sell ethanol free gas. I have to travel a hour 1 way & pay a toll to get it. When I know that I will be traveling to that area I do bring a couple of gas cans. Meanwhile if I want to buy ethanol free gas I can get 110-oz 50:1 Pre-blended for $19.99 plus tax. at several box stores, but not at the gas stations. I guess some kind of "political wisdom" LOL oxymoron at its best. Stay safe, Joe Z

Canned fuel is best, 90 octane minimum. Don’t need any extra junk if you just get canned 2 stroke fuel. Some brands are good for 2 years in the saw and 5 in the can.

I got one just like this and every time you turn it on its side it will die. It acts like it runs out of gas it's a real pain in the ass. No one knows what's wrong with it. Besides it being a Craftsman. New lines new everything and it period Craftsmen

Just a shot. Are you using a plastic filter on the fuel line? The one that should be in there is white with a little weight on the end. That keeps it in the fuel. Let me know if this was of any help. Joe Z

Thank you. I checked ebay, Amazon, Ereplacement Parts, and PartsTree & could not find it for you. Try a local shop, they may have one sitting on a dusty shelf and just keep checking on line. Also if you have a local DIY that sells reconditioned equipment he may be able to help you out with the rings or possibility a non working saw with a good jug & piston. Hope this helps. Stay safe, Joe Z

Hi, doesn't have to be a craftsman piston ring. Just measure accros the piston top & the thicknes of the ring. Search for a generic on eBay etc. Or take old ring to repair shop and ask for match. Husqvarna group products are marketed under range of brands. Similar guts, just different colour plastics and other small differences. So interchangeable, to a large degree. I'm in UK. Hope you're sorted.

@JOEZEP54
@JOEZEP54 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Marshall, Thank you for taking the time to visit. I agree that when possible buy the best quality you can afford. Now as far as that Craftsman it was given to me back around 96, yes that is 1996. Back then I did not use it much. Mainly for some pruning, occasional clean up. But the last several years I got into heating with wood. This saw held up very well. There are some features that should be changed, maybe they did by now, but for the home owner or occasional user this is not a bad saw for the money. Take care of it and you will get more than you paid for. Definitely not for daily professional use. And if you check just about everything is made in or has parts from China.
