In this episode of Restore It, I continue with the BMW E30 325i Touring restoration. Although I said I wouldn’t get carried away with this project, I decided to dig a bit deeper and remove some more parts. The rusty door needed to come off for welding or to be replaced. The rest of the headliner parts are removed in preparation for the new material, and I clean all of the old foam and glue from the chassis. Additionally, I decided to remove the front section of the carpet so that I could get a better look underneath and more easily do the chassis welding when the time came.

Yeah, it's probably more cost effective to replace it if you can find one for a good price. Doesn't look like a quick repair job.

On one hand, restoring the door means more awesome content from our favorite restorer. On the other hand, us fans would also love to see you enjoy your cars a lot sooner. Hmm that’s actually a tough decision hah. But how about both? Get the car up and running as soon as you can so you can enjoy the heck out of it, and then restore that door some other time for us to enjoy; as it seems that between your two E30’s and even possible others requesting you work on their E30’s, a restored door may come in handy!

Well Dan, You've hit the nail on the head. This is exactly what I was thinking and reading it from you just now has affirmed it for me. I would like to do it just as much as some people would like to see it, so its a win, win. I couldn't agree more. I just need to finish this project first, in good time, and do the door after. And just to let you in on a little secret, yourself or another viewer will be owning this car once its done! I need the space and the funds for the main 325i project, which I will continue at full blast as soon as this touring is done.

I want to express my gratitude for your content. I like that it’s easier to associate you with myself, an ordinary guy like you who also repairs/restores something on his own and sometimes keeps everything going only on enthusiasm. And it’s interesting to watch the development of your skills through a series of mistakes and failures, but in the end the result of the work done is getting better and better with each video. To be honest, I follow several restoration channels, but your channel is my favorite. Thank you and good luck.

Thank you for such a lovely comment, Filip! You're quite right about keeping everything going on enthusiasm alone sometimes. Personally, I would love to see a restoration of the door. Unfortunately, I don't have the tools, the workshop or even the skills to do stuff like that so I have to live vicariously through talented individuals such as yourself. However, as a content-consumer, I do understand you creators have to find the right balance of the time and effort you have to put forward at filming a lot of work vs. just replacing something that enables you to move the whole project forward a little faster. It's the proverbial; "is the juice worth the squeeze?" I hope you restore it and show the process and give us your thoughts along the way, I love that kind of stuff and really enjoy it. But, I totally get if you just replace the door with a better used one and then save the more in-depth restoration process for the front quarter-panels. Either way, can't wait for the next video. 👍🔧🙂

Aftermarket immobilisers can be a pain. I had to eradicate one from one of my past cars. It was causing the engine to cut out intermittently when driving, which was fun. It was like some sort of alien virus that had infected the car's systems and I was so glad to get rid of it. Car ran perfectly afterwards.

Yes no problems at all. It’s all about the prep. I tried everything to get the old glue off and once I’d scraped as much off as a I could I painted it I think it was with mdf sealant. That sealed it up and the fabric stuck to it fine.
@bobfrankish8883
@bobfrankish8883 2 ай бұрын
@@RestoreIt Hi Steve, the glue Martrim supply is really good stuff, it's made for the job and not just any old spray glue as far as I am aware. 2 of the headliners I re-covered are in cars we still own, this was at least 7 years ago now, could be more, both cars live outside and are still perfect. Liners with sunroofs are definitely more of a challenge, the first one I did I managed to ruin the fabric and had to buy some more, but it still worked out reasonable compared to paying a professional. Man of your talents, I'm sure you'll crack it!

That door seems like it would be a royal pain to do, but most used stuff you buy will still likely require work. It would be a service to keep one more door in the gene pool, but it seems like a lot of work to do that. Good thing you have proper tools to do it, at least significantly more than most of us.

for this project I'd replace the door and save the restoration for a later time when you have time. I'd love to see it restored my self but you could always restore the old one later and sell it or replace it with the one you bought and then re-sell that one. But one thing for sure I'd want to see the door in person to make sure the door you buy wont need the work you're trying to avoid.

As to the sunroof mechanism being complicated, I can attest 100% on an Audi A4 I am restoring. When I redid my headliner I somehow got the alignment for the retract motor off when I put it back on. The job was basically complete only to find out the sunroof didn't go through its full cycle any longer. It opens and closes and seals and everything, but after playing around with the track and the gears instead of removing the headliner and motor again to do it RIGHT, I just made it worse. It won't go all the way back into the roof and push the cover back with it. I'll need to spend another weekend removing and reinstalling it to fix, so learn from my mistake and just do it right the first time.

Door could be repaired but it’s a lot of time and effort which I personally wouldn’t bother with. I’d chase down a good used replacement. Some nice alcantara for the headlining would look good. With my old E30, I got hold of a good passenger seat cover and used that on the drivers as they are identical and not sided.

Don't know what happened after 0:45 and in later episodes. but I suggest you to just wash the headliner with heavy soap and reuse it. I did that on other headliner-type upholstery pieces on my car and result is perfect. Like the headliner did not stretch or anything during the washing. Of course this can only be done if it has no physical rips or tears...

Here in the states you can have a professional do your headliner for around $450 if you remove and install the headliner yourself. I've tried in the past to do headliners myself and while it looks ok for awhile the first time you have to park the car outside on a hot day the headliner starts to come down. It's just not worth trying to do it yourself.

Headliner colour: I've researched this a lot myself and got swatches from UK suppliers and none are a close match for the touring headlliner. I've looked to US which seem to have a wider selection of flat knit materials, but not called in any swatches. I try to colour match Vs the sunblind also when I"m searching. I've even considered getting something that's close (lighter) then staining in a bath of tea until it's good enough match. To go with black just seems lazy and wrong and then there's altering the colour of all the plastic fittings/blinds too. But do share if you find something that is acceptable as I've kicked this down the road long enough. Talk to me if you want rear headrests for this lovely vehicle also.

@@RestoreIt sometimes it's less about cost and more about looking good. For yourself and for others. Sometimes you just want your things to give off that appearance of classy sophistication. Nothing says that more than leather.

Restore the door. If you find one for a bargain while restoring it, then purchase it but then at least you'll have a spare because as you already know, E30 parts are becoming ridiculously expensive. That door rust is a common problem, I mean even me, myself am sitting with door rot on the driver's side of a Baur. I'm sure such a video will get many views on KZfaq.

This is exactly where i'm coming from. Its a win, win. But I think people are right about keeping this project going at a good pace, a video like that would take a week, maybe more. But I will be doing that video regardless, so stay tuned. I'm as interested to see it as you are. Would be a great challenge! Cheers.

I don't have the skills to repair that badly rusted door, but in the spirit of expediency, I'd just replace it.

I might have what it takes and I really want to find out... Its so tempting, but for this project I'm now leaning more towards a replacement and then restore the door later, but I'm just not sure!

If YOUR goal was just restoring the car and you aren't worried about $150 here or there, then just replace the door. On the other hand, the more restoration content we get the happier WE will be.

At this point, the door is a lost cause. Better to just buy a new one rather than wasting your time trying to fix it. This way you can focus on more important things in the restoration of this vehicle.

Dear Restore It, thank you for making the awesome content that you do. I did however just unsubscribe from your channel. The main reason being the overwhelming amount of commercials you have been doing the last couple of videos. Don't get me wrong, I really like the content but it does feel like watching one big advertisement from time to time and that is not what I'm here for. Just wanted to speak my mind and I wish you the best

As I said in the video, when the camera is off, I like to listen to my podcasts and tunes through a speaker, as headphones become uncomfortable after prolonged periods of use. I can't film without headphones on, as music and talking ruins the video, so well done champion, right back at you, Samuel 😂😂
