In this episode of Restore It, I continue with the BMW E30 325i Touring restoration. The main goal of this episode is to get the car at least cranking, if not running and idling. It's been four years since the car was last started and it's refusing to crank. I also remove the old foam and glue from the headliner, take a look at the rusty sunroof panel and dismantle the wing mirrors in preparation for shot blasting and painting.
Thank you for watching! Subscribe for more videos like this one.

Damn… 4 years already 😮 I remember, when you took the coupe apart… Than from UK to Spain, the engine bay makeover of the touring. The M3 Series. When I saw you fixing the car with the absolut minimum of equipment back in the days, I was so motivated to fix my own touring, which is unfortunately a gigantic rust bucket! 😂 Keep it up, love from Germany ❤️🔥

I know right... Time flies! It's funny you should say that, Antonio (M3 owner) sent me some photos of him driving it in Spain. Its all done and I hope to meet up with him soon and do some filming. @@RestoreItthe funny thing about my Touring is: I started disassembling and then got stuck, 6 years ago. Now my grandma gave me her Sedan, also very rusty, cause she didn’t manage to drive without power steering. So I got some other e30 project in between my touring as well. I think it’s some kind of cycle. Whenever you get one e30, another one isn’t that far away. But man, great cars. Little bit rusty and thirsty sometimes ^^

I like narration for complicated restorations. Explanations for what and why you’re doing something helps me understand what is happening on screen. Especially for multi-part projects like this.

The sunroof in my E30 coupe looked very similar when I pulled it off to address bubble rust on the top corners. I sprayed the rust chunks out with compressed air and shaking it around, and knocked down and treated all the visible rust. Paint and polish and back on the car, working well!

Hi, that cable is definitely for the pioneer or a Kenwood six disc CD changer back in the old days. It used to be controlled via the head unit and the cable with all the pins is what used to connect them. Are used to fit these for a living.

The spare cable is for a factory option cd changer that was usually a kenwood, and the wing mirrors won't separate from the base units without damage meaning you won't get them back together, i tried when i restored the 325i did, it is possible with newer models with a special tool that basically drills out the sleeve holding them together and anothe special tool to press in a new one with a new spring

That is a DIN connector for a CD changer, likely an old Alpine unit. For mirrors, should be a large hollow bolt between the two pieces and an internal spring. May be an XZN triple square to remove the bolt - at least that's how it is on Porsche mirrors of same general vintage.

All the speaker outputs went fron the stereo to the rear of the head unit all the way to the amp in the back then back through the car again to each speaker. Quite advanced for a g reg. We had bad Amos so had to make a patch lead that a guy made who works at rolls Royce. It was aircraft grade wire and it was 12 meters long in total to go everywhere. He estimated it was £1900 in wire lol. The car was only £480 as we used it for a scumrun rally round Europe fuel was really really bad but we did it in style lol.

Thanks for the tip, Ben. I'm hoping so too. It did work when the central locking was installed, so maybe I just need to remove some more wiring or something. Its an annoying issue to have, for sure.

9:30 Man! It is very dangerous to use a vacuum cleaner to suck it out of the tank. Because gasoline vapors get directly into the vacuum cleaner motor, where there are very strong sparks!

The sun-roof panel is a bit too far gone for this car; it would be fun to see if it is repairable, the same as the door.

Haha, I know what you mean. But during that particular shot, I was still using my hand on the pedal which wasn't attached to the box. I thought it felt a looked weird also, but once attached properly, its all good. Cheers!

Please - wear some gloves when handling any car fluids & tool fluids. They're in fact really hazardous and we just get used to them such that we don't care. They're not much to have on skin or breathe few times, but repairing as cars hobby or job in long term really gets to your health. This may be really cumbersome (with filming in meantime especially) but it's worth it? Side note: We don't think much of it, but also really exposed to chemicals as proffesionals are (especially art) painters, leaving them to many ailments in their later years.

Your plugs looked very dirty. Also check the air pipes incase they have holes or rips from air filter box back towards engine. Also by not having throttle cable connected the butterfly valve in throttle body would’ve been fully closed and thus starving engine of air. Once u connected that it started. I would flush fuel lines as well and clean injectors out. Probably have crud build up on the injector filters.
