On this episode of Why We Buy iT I explain why the Casio Oceanus T200 is my favorite watch in my collection. I never thought a Quartz watch could be my favorite watch. As a watch enthusiast the intricate design and operation of a Mechanical movement is hard to resist. Of course that isn't the only thing that attracts me to a watch. As my collection grew I came to realize that the quality of the finishing on a watch, it's aesthetic design, and visual appeal were more important to me than what's inside the case. That's not to say that I don't appreciate an accurate mechanical movement, with an impressive power reserve, and amazing complications. If I had to choose between a basic looking watch with an amazing movement or an impressive looking watch with a basic movement; I'm probably going to choose the impressive looking watch every time.
Now just because the Casio Oceanus has a Quartz movement doesn't make that movement basic. The Casio Tough Solar movement is impressive. Not visually impressive like a high horology mechanical movement would be. It is functionally impressive because it can remain dormant in total darkness after a full charge for 5+ months and keep the time. It is impressive because it is very accurate (+/- 15 seconds per month) whether you connect to the application or radio tower. None of that is why I purchased the Casio Oceanus T200 though. I bought the watch because it's an absolutely beautiful timepiece.
For their Oceanus line of watches Casio decided to use Zaratsu polishing in order to set them apart from everything else they produce. The Casio Oceanus T200 shines in a way that few watches do. Watches 10 times the price don't sparkle in the light as impressively as the T200. The subtle blue tint to the sapphire crystal, and deep blue colour of the dial pops just enough to grab your interest, but not so much that it's comical or distracting. Most solar watches have a panel that's visable in the light that diminishes the appearance of a watch. Even in the brightest sunlight I've never noticed the solar panel on the Casio Oceanus T200.
Size wise the Casio Oceanus fits me perfect. Now I have a 7.25 inch wrist so if you have a wrist that's smaller than 7 inches it might appear a bit large. Although the slim height of the watch might mitigate it. Unfortunately the Casio Oceanus T200 is a Japanese Domestic Market watch so you might be forced to buy it sight unseen online like I did.
Bought on Ebay at Japan's Watch Shop
It came well packaged, and arrived earlier than expected in excellent condition.

Ah, a true watch nerd’s watch! I love the t200. It’s been confirmed that Casio contracts Grand Seiko to make the beautiful cases for the Oceanus & MR-G lines. No wonder, it shows (a bit of that Zaratsu polishing)! Legendary and underrated watches imo.

I loved your video, everything you said is what I enjoy and love about my T200. It's the best watch in my collection in its functionality yet not the most expensive. Everytime I look at my wrist I'm mesmerized by the looks of this watch, it's gorgeous from every angle. Love it, love it, love it!

@@mujahidsolomons8766 It looks like everyone who owns one absolutely loves it. Very few watches shine like a T200. I only have one watch that has as impressive a polished case as the T200, and it costs 6 times as much.

Love this watch. Mine has never been in the watch box. It's either on wrist or at the ready on the bedside table. The finishing of the case...Incredible! I'm neurotic when it comes to "perfect" hand alignment and accuracy and the T200 has it. I love a quality vintage mechanical as well but they rarely see regular use since the T200 arrived. Nice review. Hello from Quebec.

I have 60 + watches in my collection. The t200 is best of all. Simple, easy to read day or night. Perfect time all the time. Initial setting made 3 years, I have not touched it since. Your review of the t200 is spot on!

Nice to meet another true fan of the T200. I get surprised looks from other Collectors who know me as a watch enthusiast when they see me wearing it. Then I tell them it's my favourite watch and they're shocked. I have had some very impressive watches in my collection. You will see a couple coming up on the channel. So they just don't get it. Unless you've owned a T200 you just don't understand.

The anti-quartz mentality is unfounded. Like it or not, quartz technology represents the pinnacle of wrist watch technology. Horology, the science and study of time measurement, places a premium on accuracy. From a purely horological perspective, the great quartz watches are the epitome of wristwatch technology. A quartz watch with solar power and atomic clock synchronization showcases some the best of what we can achieve today, far surpassing the capabilities of a simple mechanical watch.

@@barryscott990 You won't be disappointed. I don't know what's in your collection but it's unlikely that you'll feel like the finish of this watch is lacking. There are a few different colours available but the dark blue is the most versatile by far.

I have never considered a Casio. This review has me very curious though. It is a little bigger than i would normally wear but i am assuming that it is possible to find one in a watch store to try on? I have no problem with quartz if there is a functional reason for it. I do spend extended times in the wilderness and always wear quart. Waterproof quartz. No automatics. The next time i am in a city i will try to find a T200 to test the fit. It might be just what i need. Battery and solar and connectivity? Interesting.

The T200 is a JDM release so it might be difficult to find one to try on depending where you are. Casio Oceanus has authorized dealers in Canada and the United States now. You can see some of their models if that works. I've found that even though the T200 and S100 are JDM models the salespeople at Oceanus dealers tend to own them personally. Hope that helps.
