I started on a Onewheel this past year with an XR, then got a GT, and then in the past month I've moved to an EUC starting with the Inmotion V11. I gotta say my thoughts lined up really close to yours. The Onewheel can be more convenient and portable, its less intrusive, its easier at slow speeds to navigate crowds and things, and the carving motion like a snowboard is more "fun". The EUC to me is a ton of fun too, but its more about speed and commuting and distance, whereas the Onewheel almost encourages you more to do tricks and go slower and have fun with the shorter rides. They're both fun in their own ways and that's why I keep both.

I’m still surprised at how fun they are every time I ride mine. I started my PEV journey on the Onewheel v1 in 2015 and now I’d still like to always keep one in the quiver. Currently that wheel is a CBXR, also I haven’t tried a VESC yet but I’m interested.

Onewheel Pint rider. Can confirm they are virtually indestructible. Very well made. If people want to try mine, I never give it a second thought that it might break. I’ve heard service is a pain, but it also seems they don’t often need it, so that’s a plus. They are however very closed-source. You MUST send to FM for repairs. EUC definitely offers more bang for the buck, but I’ve never heard OW people say “avoid the first batch”. The motors in all OW models are 750W, though the GT also says it’s 3KW. You might like the GT better. As for weatherproofing, I’ve ridden mine through puddles without issue. The biggest risk I think is the bearings getting rusty, vs any issue with the electronics. Batteries I think are NMC, which are not the highest capacity, but are highly rugged, compared to higher power cells used in EUC. And as for off road? Just send it bud! They can do it just fine, just no extreme climbs.

Thanks for the video Adam! It is great to see you roaming around in North America :) I enjoyed having a Onewheel XR. It is a fun vehicle. However, once I became proficient on an EUC it just sat unused. I don't really miss the slow carving and strongly prefer being able to keep up and surpass San Francisco street traffic. I could never do that with a Onewheel. Now that I have a suspension EUC my EUC joy has only gone up another level. Selling the XR did allow me to get a Nikola+ as my learning EUC so I am thankful for that.

Bought a Onewheel Pint for my daughter's birthday as she had tried one and really liked it. It was actually delivered well before her birthday but upon reading up on the restrictive repair policy and the fact that no one in Canada is allowed to repair them, I sent it back in the box unopened. I discovered the MagWheel Trotter does everything the Onewheel does but at half the price and has RIGHT TO REPAIR, I got her a Trotter T1 @ $795 CAD and she is very happy with it. I Have an old EUC that I paid less than $400 about 7 years ago which still works but with about 10km range left and top speed is about the same as the Trotter or Onewheel Pint. I got a Kingsong S18 recently after much internet research and will seriously consider an Mten4 for local riding once it's been out for awhile to work out the bugs.

The onewheel does not really have a comparable product except float wheel which just got released. So I rightly assumed you should have kept the onewheel. I own a Talaria mx4 and a onewheel GT. I started off on a Onewheel XR, really loved the floaty feeling, which was addictive, ended up doing over 46,000kms on it until the bms died, during that whole time the thought of getting an EUC was growing on me and thought I'd get an EUC once this thing died, as soon as it did, I went out and got a V12. I love riding my onewheel but repairability is a big issue. They only have one repair center which is in the US. I live in Europe and my onewheel stopped working one day. I went to a local shop that sells onewheels but the guy told me my only option was to ship it to California for 300usd so FutureMotion could assess it and let me know what's wrong with it. I did end up sending it over, they claimed water damage to the battery and replaced it for another 250usd on top of the shipping costs. At the time I didn't know any better but looking at other people's experience and the behaviour of my onewheel before it stopped working it seems to me the problem was actually with the balancing of the cells and had nothing to do with water damage. They didn't have any reason to lie about this as the warranty on my board had already expired. Right now my headlight flickers. I just turned off my lights because I don't feel like contacting futuremotion to get some bullshit explanation on why I need to pay another 300 dollars to send my board over so they can 'assess' it and have a 'professional' replace some overpriced parts that are probably very well repairable.

At that point it's no longer a viable mode of transport and just becomes an overpriced toy. Best Honest opinions Adam! I still keep my Pint (version 1) for business travel because I can bring the 160Wh machine on my jet for work and riding. I also bought the GT-40 add-on piggyback lipo that basically doubles the Pint range and use it for range extending on the Pint X and XR Plus also. My Pint X is for sure more powerful and range is better too, plus I added an “Ignite Lift kit” which elevates the whole board at the axel and allows more aggressive off-roading and less nose-dives due to little dips or depressions on the trail. Pretty hard to navigate tree roots and such without a jump and does train track a lot but still a blast on trails. My XR plus is just comfortable in a different way. So overall I’d agree completely (except for trails with the lift Kit) that these OneWheels are very nice “boulevard cruisers”. I nevertheless bought these because I really wanted an EUC (I bought a Inmotion V11”) but was scared if injury. After a couple hundred miles on the OneWheels and 6 months later I could not resist the EUC especially after discovering you videos. Now 2 months and 200+ miles into my V11 I purchased and am eagerly awaiting my new InMotion V13. I told myself I would never go faster than 20mph but have found 20-30 quite enjoyable on the V-11 without a crash., thus enticed by the V13, not that I’ll necessarily go 56mph … but love the suspension rides. I never went over 20 on the OneWheel but that was enough to be comfortable. Btw I invested in Full face helmet, Flexmeter wrist guards, knee/shin guards, Motorsports crash jacket, and lens protectors for my 360 cam that I ALSO crashed with on the OneWheel lol.

As a 2.5yr, 2900mi urban rider of the OW, and an EUC, I agree with your commuting criticism of the OW. However, I think your overall review is, as you said, late to the party and certainly based on too little time on the board. There are people (not me) that seem to be able to make the OW dance in the off-road environment. IMHO, the OW and the EUC only compete for our time and money, they do not provide the same experience. From a fun standpoint if I had to choose, I would let my EUC go first, but I do appreciate the practicality of the EUC more.

I do like the build quality of the onewheel compared to most EUCs. The aluminum rails are very robust and feel more sturdy than the plastic shells of EUCs. The sherman-s should feel amazingly similar and robust I imagine. The onewheel is packed with many safety features (which onewheel riders find annoying when wanting extended range batteries) The onewheel is definitely less capable than EUCs, but I feel that is part of the charm/fun. Its in line with skateboards for commuting. A bike will always be more capable than a skateboard, but skateboarders are looking for that kind of feeling with tricks and navigating the streets. Right to repair has been huge in the onewheel community. Sending to futuremotion simply isnt possible or feasible for people outside the US. Luckily in the past couple of weeks, VESC has been catching up with futuremotion. You can now build an 84v onewheel that you can service and buy all the parts to yourself

This video was a good open minded review on the one wheel. It opened my eyes a bit on the other side. And I have to agree. It looks very easy to get on and off! Also the slow speed and stopping looks so natural! I hate having to stop and get off near traffic. It sucks having to get back on around cars. I agree with all you mentioned, I’ve been riding both EUC & both pint & XR for years now. The pint carves better than the XR. I like the fact OneWheels fit easily in gym lockers but they do give you rear leg calf pump. OneWheels should come with fangs as standard. OneWheels are a pain to carry around supermarkets even in their bespoke rucksack they still aren’t comfortable. However strapping a Onewheel to a motorbike is a lot easier than a big EUC or electric skateboard. I have the Begode RS19 HS also. For high speed stability I like EUC’s & electric skateboards, but the OneWheels might decide to nose dive & throw you off where as a skateboard (evolve bamboo GTR) for example will roll to a smooth stop.

As far as the durability and build quality it's really hard to beat onewheel. The gt had it's launch issue forsure which was a disaster imo. But my friend has a gt which I have ridden extensively at this point, I own 2 pints and a v12 HT. I am way more confident being abusive to my onewheels. I dont feel like I ever have to worry about damaging it. The gt is super fun on thin trails where I worry alot about my euc clipping pedals. I also feel that the onewheel has alot more grip on loose surfaces. It might be that I'm very comfortable on my onewheel and less so on my euc. That all being said, I still choose my euc 9 times out of 10. I think some of the issues you were having like train tracking is beginner stuff or the fact that the stock xr tire is absolutely horrible compared to any of the aftermarket ones(probably like my trail complaints for eucs) but its undeniable that eucs are far superior spec wise. You don't have to worry about bumps and curbs like you do on a onewheel, they go way faster and way further without worrying at all about faceplanting. Onewheels are sooo much more fun going sub 20mph or on smoother compact dirt trails or packed gravel. If you aren't on a dirtbike trail dodging roots and rocks once you're more comfortable is really where that thing shines imo. Sure, if you hit a steep hill you're gonna have to carry it up, but the fun you can have at much lower speeds is hard to match. Eucs and onewheels are just so different it's really hard to directly compare them.

It's pretty expensive for what it is. An inMotion V12 with a 1750 Wh battery pack costs $2200, same as the OneWheel GT with 525 Wh battery. The V12 has a more powerful motor, it's faster, has 3x the range, better with hills / stairs / off-roading, has the trolly handle, and you can service the battery yourself without bricking it. 525 Wh of cells probably cost FM like $100 wholesale, and the battery packs seem to be an easy assembly process. Probably no more than $150-$200 total for parts and assembly. Not saying the OW doesn't look like it would be fun to mess around with, but I feel like it's the hype and lack of competition keeping its price so high; I imagine loads of childrens are begging their parents for one for XMas. Supply and demand is what drives price, so having a company with a monopoly on a product will almost always keep costs higher. Not loving FM's service situation and warranty; sounds super wasteful to have to ship the entire thing back to them if anything goes wrong. BTW, the battery, tire, and foot pedals are only warrantied for 6 months, which you only find out when you read the fine print. Shady AF. The rest of the unit is warrantied for 12 months. Just checked, if you need to get this repaired out of warranty, it's $80 to ship it there and back. I get how they could try and justify bricking the thing if you unplug the battery; if someone replaces the battery and the thing starts on fire, FM isn't held liable. However, if that were really the only reason, they could just as easily have the customer fill out a waiver to release FM of responsibility for any problems the modifications may cause and remove the software lock... More likely they're bricking the thing because they want to be the one that supplies the new battery after the warranty runs out. Someone claimed OneWheel charged them $500 for a new motherboard / BMS out of warranty. $500 for something I imagine costs under $100!! I've seen claims that new battery pack would cost around $500-$600. That's likely over a 100% profit margin. It's no wonder there's a market for open source motherboards and third party battery packs being made for these things. Short warranty on such an expensive product, plus extortionate repair costs. It also sounds like FM is pretty lacking on software updates, whereas some third party software is giving people features they want, like more torque on hills and automatic tilt back on hills to avoid the front catching.

A GT with float life's enduro tire offers a more carvey, torquey experience. Avid onewheel rider and an EUC rider in training here. I agree with you on all your points pro/cons on the XR. I own both an XR and a GT. The GT definitely has more torque, range and a tiny bit more speed. It can be pushed a little more than it's recommended speed of 20mph, but sustaining anything past 20mph is not really safe imo. I love to off road on my onewheel both the XR and GT, but if I had to give one up it would be the XR (unless I modded it with a VESC). As I ride an EUC more I can say it is fun and more practical in real world scenarios. More power, speed, range basically everything about an EUC's performance blows the onwheel GT out of the water. For reference I'm riding a veteran sherman as my learning EUC. My very first EUC, my T4, was DOA. Anyways long story short even though an EUC outperforms my GT in every way, the GT is just way more fun with enough performance.

I'm not sure I fully understand the term "train-tracking" but assuming I do, it's not a gigantic problem generally-speaking, because a OW is so fun to carve - most OW riders are doing a serpentine S-path constantly, because going in a straight line is kinda boring (and also doesn't keep you as in-touch with where your board is at, power-wise). It’s true there is a fun magic on the Onewheel but when you are comparing after add-ons to basically the same price as an RSht it’s almost silly and I would say that these machines should be about $800 for a little fun time around town. Just my opinion. I don't see that being very likely. Main one is there are speed laws for PEVs or ebikes in many states that many EUCs technically break. Just the police don't tend to enforce it. Price may be possible, but being American made make it unlikely. China has always had cheaper resources and for some reason people willingly work for less. Plus China also has indentured servitude so matching them on price is basically impossible.

The onewheel XR was a super robust wheel. Unfortunately that can't be said for their latest wheels; some of them aren't working out the box & future motion make it impossible to repair them when they do go wrong (disconnecting the battery will brick the board). Personally I think future motion are a pretty scummy company & I wouldn't buy their latest generation of boards. It's a shame because their old ones, like the XR that's reviewed here was a quality product

look, I absolutely love the Onewheel up until I sold it (purely for personal financial reasons). And with being able to get so much more range and power in EUC for the same price, I just can't get another Onewheel now. not with what EUC has to offer. If it was way cheaper maybe. will say that you do a curb hop up the curve, a bit tricky at the start, but way less of an issue later, especially if you have flight fins

Great and fair review, Adam. I couldn't find much of anything to correct or offer in addition to what you said. I think you were fair. One thing I can point out, the new GT comes with much better footpads, better power and more range, but it is the cost of my V12HT, hence the decision to get into EUCs. I still prefer the OneWheel for grocery store trips. I throw mine in the shopping cart and ride home with my groceries. One other thing, and I might be dumb for doing this, I have a lot of confidence on my OneWheel so I just rock a helmet (with a Brake Free) on my rides, vs needing to put basically all of my motorcycle gear to ride the EUC. One other caveat is, the Pint has a different tire contour that is more maneuverable than the XR which I really like. I can carve more. The power on my Pint is lacking, can't go up hills you can smash on an EUC. Switching to incline mode is a pain in the butt, so I never do it. I feel like I've outgrown my Pint because it's just too slow for me now. Was thinking of getting a new OneWheel and then decided to jump ship and get an EUC (which I have been thinking about doing for a while). Your point on reliability is a huge one. You do have a peace of mind with OneWheel that it won't blow up or cut out on you (older ones could cut out on you, not so much the newer ones). I think I will be enjoying both, the EUC and the OneWheel going forward. There's still a place for OneWheel in my life. I have a feeling that I will use it way less with the EUC in my life (don't tell my OneWheel). Thanks again for an amazing review. A+++

Yeah that's one of the reasons I've always been hesitant on them. They look convenient and fun, but the idea of tipping just a bit too far feels so unnerving. Plus unlike the EUC if it happens as you try to accelerate you're standing the wrong way to quickly jump off it backwards or walk off when it stops. EUCs still aren't perfect with cutouts, but it does feel slightly safer.

I think the cons far outweigh the pros. However . . . I just had to disassemble my Begode RS (which I like a great deal) and was appalled at the assembly quality. Do they have chimps applying the goo stuff they use to hold certain parts in place? I have worked in electronics manufacturing - in the US, China, Korea, and Malaysia, and have never seen such sloppiness. But I still think I'll stick to my EUC, shoddy workmanship and all.

He has stated in the past hating Begode's build quality. The Master seemed to have somewhat improved likely as a result of the fires with the Monster, but every wheel prior was seemingly built as cheaply as possibly. Maybe that XR that you borrowed is worn out or something because most people don't have any problems going off-road. As far as the problem with it tracking around, it might just be that you aren't very good on it yet. If you think that onewheel didn't seem fun now then you should see how it feels when you can go up and down curbs, and off-road! The GT is way more powerful than the XR and I can haul ass uphill on it.

@andrzejz8316
@andrzejz8316 Жыл бұрын
Awesome and open-minded review Adam! So my random comments on the video... XR out of the box is far from waterproof, but there is well established process of waterproofing. After that you can basically ride in any weather, including pouring rain. As for the accessories - there are not many models and they are sold for years, so it's easier for small 3rd party company to invest in a mold to make top notch quality plastic parts (comparing to 3d printed accessories). Same reason why we have custom tires made specifically for onewheels by 3rd parties. Uphills - yes you won't go on a steep hills like you show. XR is seriously underpowered, custom VESC based wheels beat it easily with the same motor and battery (this is just how much safety headroom Future Motion decide to go with - XR BMS cuts power at 30 Amps where you have battery that can deliver 60A continues current - US safety standards, love it or hate it). I mean skilled rider would climb this little hill easily going side by side, but it's really not the point... We just take different routes. Dropping from a curb is hard? C'mon, maybe for a newbie. Train tracking? There's even saying in the community: ABC - Always Be Carving - going straight is not how we ride these things :-) Also you got custom tire that somebody put there, because stock one is just too flat and it's not turning so easily, so yeah... We kinda expect this behaviour. As for off-road... Overcoming those limitations you are taking about is what makes riding off-road really fun. Does it require skill? Is is dangerous? Hell yeah! Sure you're not gonna climb steep hills or fly like Mike Leahy, but really check out what OW pros doing on trails. For me downhill singletracks with a lot of turns and berms is where the fun is. I think the biggest misconception is directly comparing capabilities of PEVs in "fun area" - we are going off-road to have fun and adrenaline kick and maybe similar amount of it is just delivered by different off-road features - take landing huge jump on EUC might be similar to landing from a meter height rock on OW (close to death experience ;-) ) As for OW being more dangerous than EUC while commuting - fully agree. You need to be focused all the time, there's always bump waiting to kill you no matter the skills. As for the practicality - just put in the shopping carts as you say... Or somethimes when there's not a lot of people just riding slowly in the store... Anyway, aren't we used to have our hands free? Or you are missing that handle bar? ;-) Standard accessories - for the fender (mudguard), yes for our climate it seems obvious, but... This thing is designed in California... also lots of people just don't like the look of the board with fender and ride without it. And of course there's a wide variety of 3rd party fenders that look better or serves different purpose than stock. Price - you know... It's not Chinese company, they need money for lawyers... ;-) Warranty - yeap, it's pretty fucked up, especially if you live outside of US. The idea of shipping the whole board for service for California if my controller is broken is just stupid. They will also not sell you replacement. Love the product, hate the company... That's one of the reason why people that want to service and upgrade their boards are moving to open source based controllers and building their own VESC Onewheels. The other is removal of limitations and safety features so we also experience nosedive at over 30 mph.
@Skylancer727
@Skylancer727 Жыл бұрын
Well the train tracking is more a complaint as it makes carving more difficult as he showed. Since the bottom is so flat you either are going fully one way or just straight as you can't make fine shifts left to right. The only real way to fix that is have a more curved wheel with a slightly less defined flat center. But off roading is more an addition to hills. Off roading takes more power than roads so if it struggles with even a 15% incline on a street it's safe to say most dirt or gravel hiking paths or mountain biking trails are just out of the question. Plus the addition of the tipped front end. That means approaching bumps or rocks too straight on could easily clip it. As you said, you can mitigate that, but it is a limitation of the design. And same applies to hills. Yes you could carve back and forth, but isn't a product that can go straight up better in your eyes? As you said, people are even actively modifying them just to do that. I won't deny any of the benefits of it, but just think you're kinda glossing over the negatives as amature skill gap.

Onewheel XR was my first pev. It changed my life. They are definitely a lot more fun, more portable, superior build quality etc. in comparison to eucs. More range and power would be amazing and the VESC community is making it happen right now too. Also, just to note, most of the issues Adam listed like clearing larger curbs and having trouble with stability go away once you get a little more experienced and learn a couple things... And ohh god there's a lot to learn. SO yeah, I personally would highly recommend onewheels for those who find themselves intrigued and have the patience to learn. The thing is absolutely bonkers.

Now I just see One Wheelers as dude bros who are more concerned about "coolness" than performance, capability, and getting your money's worth for what you paid for. It's like the people who pay double for Apple products or Beats or anything else popular. I'd rather be smart than cool, especially at 35 years old.
