One Winged Camellia Bowl! - Wood Turning

My friend Gary over at ThePapa1947 gave this piece of Camellia to me. I didn't know Camellia grew this large. The wood is very dense and hard and gave me some trouble in turning it, but the result was worth my hard work. I love the very odd, natural shape of this piece. By the way, I spelled Camellia wrong on the bottom of the bowl, dang it!

Hi Phil you and Gary must have both had a profitable visit, watched. both of you turn wood you had exchange as gifts. Enjoyed seeing them. A beautiful bowl, but I have not forgotten you owe us 2 Black Cherry. Can't wait to see if that small piece is a burl underneath. Hope you enjoyed the match. I've been watching the postponed 6 Nations Rugby Matches. God Bless stay safe. Tony

I'm so glad I found this video. I have a piece of wood somewhat similar to what you started out with for this project and I had not decided what or even if I could do anything with it but now I know what I want to do. It will be a while though as I'm just getting started in turning and I know I need to get some more experience before trying this. That said, I sure do appreciate you narrating your lathe speed, tool use, and that you are wearing a face shield and dust mask when starting. Sometimes we need that reminder that safety equipment is not something to forget about. Take care and thanks for the education and entertainment.

Very distinctive piece, unusual, irregular and unique. I really appreciated that you showed the difficulties you encountered Phil. We can all learn from understanding that it's not always plain sailing and that we learn more when we overcome difficulties. There is an honesty in the way that you record your work Phil, an openness which is very engaging. This particular video was very instructive for me.

Phil, it’s adorable. I don’t know anyone who can turn everything you out your hands on and turns up to be a beautiful piece of art. Boy I have to beg to get some wood from a fallen tree. You lucky man, people get in line to offer you various types of wood. Stay safe Phil. Thank you for your video.

Thank you, Sylvie! 😊 You are right, of course. I have the best, most generous viewers on the planet! If not for them I would be turning only the cracked, bug infested wood that is common to my area. I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to turn such a great variety of wood.

Really great stuff, once again, Phil. Turned out really great. I have to agree with Tuffy, "NEVER boring" only ever educational and certainly nail biting entertainment at times. Your intro on just where to place the piece reminds me of a David Ellsworth video in which he states how he never goes into a piece with a preconceived outcome, like you, he lets the piece guide him to the final end, you did exactly that with this wing.....STUNNING!!!

Bonsoir Phil ! As usual your live edge work is great. Everything is one of a kind, very unique. I think it’s great you have so many friends that send you all the various woods you show on your videos. I’m looking into getting a large round scraper like you have, can you please share the size and maker. Thanks for the fun videos.

Thank you, Michael! I have the best, most generous viewers! My scraper is a Benjamin's Best. It's a 1 1/2" round nose that I reground to negative rake. 36° top and bottom.

Hi Phil, That may have been a bit of a fight but you won every single round apart from one when it went for a quick flight. LOL. I have never seen anything come off your lathe before. That is an amazing looking bowl Phil and the Howards really made the bark and grain come to life. Great work as always Phil. Take care buddy. Cheers, Huw

Great turning as always, Phil. Your uploads are a must for me as I'm learning so much. I'm a keen turner and at the moment I have a friend who has just started into the craft. We get together for one hour sessions and three hours later we emerge covered in shavings.
