Fun Fact: At the end of the test footage Deadpool said “Hi Tom!” Tom Rothman was the Fox Chairman who didn’t want a Deadpool movie, maybe even the one who suggested sewing his mouth in Wolverine Origins. He was also against introducing Centinels in the X Men movies.

Chan has stated multiple times that his childhood love of Buster Keaton movies led directly to this fusion. Unlike your standard fusion, what with curry burritos, you get slapstick kung fu that has come dangerously close to killing him on multiple occasions. I remember seeing the test footage, downloading it and immediately showing it to my brother and father. When it came out I insisted on dragging my boyfriend to watch it with me. This one scene sold the movie to me and my entire family.

Actually, now that I am studying animation, this is considered rough. The model is clearly great, but you can see the animator worked on a low render setting as to not work too hard the computer (high render= more detail= more computer calculations= longer time to show final product to the studio= time we don’t have to spend on a final product that might not be in the studio’s interest). You can also see that the stand-in goons are all the same model, showing they probably used a in-studio rig. All this because they didn’t need four individual different guys, they needed someone to hit Wade and get hit by him while he makes jokes and shows his lovely personality (and ass)

I realise that after seeing that old test footage again for the first time in so many years I started bouncing in my seat because that clip is so deeply rooted in my memories with excitement and hope because when it first leaked we weren’t sure if Fox could be convinced to greenlight the movie but then also if that movie could make it to completion without being spoilt by studios interference. It was a ride. Such simpler times

I think Deadpool's healing ability really plays into a lot of the points for the action sequence. His inability to be killed or significantly hurt in most situations really recontextualises any fight. There's no pretense of the protagonist managing to avoid being hurt (an action film staple) because it doesn't matter, he can take it. And thus the lack of any real danger (Deadpool knowing that) skews the situation from "can the hero win?" to "can the hero make things interesting?".

Really like the point about "Visceral Slapstick." Wisecrack did a video on how John Wick 3's violence was comedic which was oddly similar not in the traditional sense but in that comedy is achieved through the reaction to the violence.
