There was an idea. To bring together a group of remarkable KZfaqrs to see if we could become something more.
On this, the week of Avengers: Endgame, a couple of remarkable KZfaqrs assembled and each made a video describing One Marvelous Scene from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I took a moment from Avengers: Age of Ultron. I think The Afterparty is one of the best acted, written, and directed scenes the MCU has created thus far. Here's why.

One of the greatest ideas surrounding this scene actually was in a Lego game of all things. Stan Lee was a janitor, and while cleaning up after the party when everyone had left, he casually lifted the hammer to dust underneath it.

7:35 There's this common misconception about the farmhouse scene in Age of Ultron. People who aren't actually paying attention think it's about sterility, when in reality it is about abuse survival. It's very easy to break the scene down. A man and a woman are having an argument about their doomed relationship. The man says: You shouldn't be with me. I'm a monster. I'm such a monster, I can't have children. The woman says: Whoah there. I can't have kids either. Does that make me a monster? Then Widow goes on to monologue her tragic backstory and abusive childhood. She explains the series of mindwarp flashbacks Scarlet Witch put her through. And all anyone hears in all of that is "sterility equals monster." That's the main problem with Age of Ultron. Thor's hot tub cave sidequest and the excessive action scenes clutter the film and don't give Black Widow's backstory and character arc the room to breathe that it deserves. Black Widow isn't a monster because she can't get pregnant. She's a monster because an evil organization took her and hundreds of other little girls and turned them into monsters. They made monsters of children by stripping away their humanity piece by piece, and the very last piece of humanity they took was the ability to create life. Ensuring that those little girls could only take life. The great thing about Age of Ultron is that it encapsulates the arc of Black Widow's character development over her entire life, and explains why she is the way she is. The biggest shortcoming of Age of Ultron is that it's missing the scene where Black Widow regains her humanity. The scene that explains why she fights so hard to get Hawkeye back in Avengers 1, and why she does what she does in Endgame. And that scene isn't the first time she meets Hawkeye. It's not the first time he convinces her to join Shield. It's not even the first time he takes her to the farmhouse to meet his wife and kids. It's the fifth or sixth time she goes to the Barton farm for family dinner. It's the first time Hawkeye's daughter says "I love you Aunty Nat." Because in all Black Widow's actions across all the Marvel movies there is one thing she will never let happen. She is never going to let herself be put in the position where she's the one who has to explain to her niece why that little girl's father isn't coming home.

I HAVE A THEORY!!! ENDGAME SPOILERS BELOW. I think that Cap has ALWAYS been worthy, but since Thor said the whole "if you can lift it you can be King of Asgard" thing, the moment he noticed that he could lift it, he stopped. I feel like that's why he knew to lift Mjolnir during the final fight in Endgame. Cap isn't the type to show off, not at the expense of another, so it makes sense for his character. He only lifted it to save Thor's life.

This scene should overall be a writing lesson. If you want people to care for your characters and to relate to them you need these scene where they're all hanging out and talking. It shows us that these characters are relatable and are indeed human. That we can root and care for them. That we can feel depressed at their lowest moments and feel great at their triumphs. This is why the MCU works so well.

I always enjoy this scene, I know they’re actors but just the ease and chemistry they bring to the group dynamic feels so natural and earned, earned over the patient course of years. Take notes, rushed DCEU. Patience will be rewarded

I'm a little bit cynically opposed to the idea that this scene perfectly mirrors each character's growth throughout the entire movie, displaying their arc in a simple setup. I think it more comes down to the fact that Joss Whedon knows these characters incredibly well, and understood precisely how each would react to the setup of "Mjolnir on a table". Of course that same characterisation would be the backbone of the entire film - his stories are nothing but character. This scene struck me more as a microcosm of that philosophy than of a grander foreshadowing. Also, can we just chat for a minute about how Age of Ultron is considered the black sheep of the Avengers franchise? It's easily my favourite Marvel movie (not the best Marvel movie, just my favourite), potentially my favourite movie of all time, and is full to the brim of some of the best scenes in the entire franchise. Vision picking up Mjolnir and giving it to Thor should be taught in film schools everywhere as a masterclass in storytelling technique, and it gives me chills just thinking about the first time I saw it in theatres. WHY DO PEOPLE NOT LOVE THIS MOVIE LIKE I DO?! I mean, obviously the Ragnarok stuff is a total bust, especially after the actual Ragnarok came out and showed just how big a waste of time the exposition pool was, but apart from that this movie is a joy from titles to credits and absolutely nobody talks about it. Please, anybody, looking to have a serious discussion here - what's the deal with the Ultron hate?
