Happy one-year anniversary, and happy (German) Mother's Day, Ashton! If you keep making your (great) videos, I will keep watching. It is fantastic to have a channel like yours that doesn't just feature German sweets- and bread-tasting, driving on the Autobahn, culture shocks, reverse culture shocks, German habits that you like or don't like, or the occasional shopping clip. I also love the fact that you, in contrast to most other expat channels, don't have clickbaity titles (e.g. "This is what Germans are really like"). To sum it all up: I am totally happy that I found you!

That is really nice, thank you so much for your support. KZfaq really has a video for almost everyone but we are happy we found a way to make ours different from the existing channels. Plus, we are happy to dive deeper in these subjects to learn more about where we are living... beyond the simple things.

I also love the non-clickbait titles. It´s so insulting and unsatisfying. KZfaq doesn´t need to be cheap, if you´re patient and offer good quality content.

Congratulations on reaching the one-year mark! My wife (a native German) and I moved to Germany from the US two years ago, and I have found that your videos accurately reflect many aspects of the differences between the two countries. They also delve deeply into many of the practical issues that arise when one is adjusting to life in Germany--issues that don't arise when one is here as a tourist. In this video, I found Jonathan's quick summary of reasons in favor of e-bikes helpful. As a fit but older owner of my first e-bike in the hills around Trier, I have found that it extends my mobility without compromising my fitness. It also replaces a lot of car or bus trips. It would be great to see a video using Jonathan's summary as the outline.

Geht mir genau so!

yt brought you to my timeline bc I watched a few other expat channels. while they copy one another with the usual topics, you brought a good mixture and a high quality by research. good luck for the future and thank you for keeping it real. things made from the topics you really like and are interested in are always better than the rest. some youtubers make a lot of reaction videos, it*s quick money, but I think it*s kinda lame. so HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, if you know what we can do to bring you to 100 000, let us know.

Congratulations on your first year on KZfaq! When you talk about your learning experience and KZfaq being a learning by doing for you, I don't want to challenge that, but honestly, what drew me to your channel, when I first encountered it, it really was the palpable thoughtfulness, ambition and quality. When you talk about how your audience corrects you in the comments, as someone who has written two or three longer comments in the last few months, I would like to respond that I would hardly make that effort if I didn't take great pleasure in seeing how much effort you make to paint a really accurate picture of how things are in Germany. In this sense - and I mean this as the greatest possible compliment - you are the most "German" American family I have "met" on KZfaq and we Germans can consider ourselves lucky that you are here and are such great ambassadors!

Thanks for answering the question about Jack's privacy. As long as you're holding up to those limits, I can keep on enjoying your channel. I'm also somewhat relieved that your informational videos perform better than your travel videos. There are so many travel vlogs out there, but what the world actually needs is well researched and entertainingly conveyed information as a counter-weight to "fake news" and "alternative facts". Anyhow, I wish you all the best for the next year and all the aeons to come.

About kids on internet, in Europe it's not only about cultural differences but the legal aspect. In Switzerland - and German is often quite similar - kids have a legal right to privacy and technically cannot consent to give it up since they are underage. It's often ignored and there is a form of tolerance, but it's still illegal. So it's not legally speaking a "family decision" only and here lies the cultural difference. The state may - like with homeschooling - put it's nose into your family's decisions. Since you have a legal team, you might wanna ask them about German laws. On the lighter side, happy anniversary, just discovered your channel and been binge watching it. Awesome and factual content. My go to place when I feel like complaining about Swiss taxes. Sets the record straight and reminds me why it's worth it a 1000 times

Happy one year! I've always appreciated your channel/videos because I don't think you ever come off as show-boaty. I can tell you guys are really passionate about sharing your experiences and really connecting them from growing up in the US to now raising a family in Germany. It's great how people get to see how people live in other countries (from an American perspective, we definitely need more of this). Plus, this channel is a great escape for me to think back to my time in Freiburg haha. Especially the bits in this video involving biking--biking is such a staple of the Freiburg life yet here in Kansas City, biking on roads can be really precarious so it's great when there are bike lanes or trails like the Trolley Trail by me where I live for that. Speaking of that, did Jonathan know there is an authentic German-themed Biergarten called Kansas City Bier Company off the Trolley trail in Waldo??

I don’t watch a lot of videos apart from when I cook and clean up afterwards. I listen more than I watch actually 😅 but your channel has quickly become one of my favourite ones as you are clearly not typical ‘influencers’. Your videos are speaking to me because I lived outside of Germany for 26 years and coming back here after such a long time felt a bit like starting over in a new country (which I‘ve done several times) and I’ve got an outsider viewpoint now like you. I think it’s an important experience to make and I liked how talked about the issue of apparently getting unpatriotic by being able to compare and suddenly seeing how things can work when done differently too. If that is unpatriotic, then patriotism is not good for any country. 😬 Oh BTW in your ancestry video you mentioned the Haferland family name and how you seem to have connections to Hanover: in my school here in Hanover there were two siblings with that last name. You could be related to them! 😅

I've been following you for a few days/weeks now and have "catched up" on a lot of videos... it's just a pleasure to see/hear you. The videos you make are of really great quality, as well as the well-founded research and your non-judgmental impression. According to “good German tradition”, you are NOT afraid to first keep quiet about things and later get upset with others about them. No... you just come across as genuine and that's so nice to experience. By the way, not all Germans are bourgeois / very conservative and have problems with a rather relaxed clothing/lifestyle... BUT the region in which you live is known to be VERY conservative in this regard 😂. When I see videos like these from other KZfaqrs who come from America or still live there, but feel more comfortable here in Germany or would rather live here, then it makes me a little proud, even though "we Germans" really don't agree with everything are it here will decide. Please keep it up and thank you for your content.❤

And such type of videos like yours are rare on YT. I love them.

Thanks so much! We've learned many channels go for the 'easy' topics and discussions to get more videos done faster. We decided from the beginning that quality and content will always be our top priority. We are capable of doing the research and believe they will perform better in the long term. Thanks for your support!

Love the video! Love your view! There is an energy in your “performance” (for lack of a better word) that is really nice! Btw: No idea how other people feel: when I post a comment, I never EXPECT an answer from the channel’s owner. I am happy whent there is one! But seeing what goes on on somewhat popular channels, I really have great respect for you even reading everything, not to mention taking time to answer! Concerning most US Expats’ way of talking about the corrections that come from German viewers, I feel that there is a possible cultural friction point - which interestingly all the US Expats I’ve watched on YT - including you - seem to have understood but have to keep explaining to their American viewers: What might come across as telling someone off for making a mistake in the US, coming from a German is (most of the time) simply meant as a help to get back on track. Sometimes, if it comes very factual, it might seem rude. It is hardly ever meant that way!
@mstrillian8981
@mstrillian8981 2 жыл бұрын
I second that - the love for your videos and the comment on the "corrections" of your German viewers (although I am sure to have read also such comments from US viewers). I myself know that a 20min video can't cover every detail and therefore check the comments for additional information and other insights. It's like a forum discussion for me. Most Germans are pretty straight forward so it might sound like a critique, but please don't take that personal! Your channel is the best expat channel I know so far! Keep up the good work ☺️
@TypeAshton
@TypeAshton 2 жыл бұрын
Germans (on average, not everyone of course) are certainly more direct and to the point than Americans. But we have lived here long enough to know that it's not meant to be rude and it's to keep people 'on track' as you have mentioned. We are happy to continue learning and improving from everyone on here.

You are already doing professional quality content in terms of production, information and entertainment. And you guys are such a relatable and entertaining couple that literally everyone I know would love to call you their friends. ♥ Huge kudos about keeping Jacks privacy and your stance on clickbait and influencing. The Q and A video overview video worked well because of the time difference and with a livestream, most YTubers either do that while they’re traveling to show people around a particular place or they using it to discuss a current events topic and in both they’re answering questions while they’re doing the show. What you guys have works for you and with 20K subscribers at this point in time, you’re not yet anywhere near where the top influencers but you’ll surely get there! Like the old saying has it, Rome wasn’t built In a day and the same is true with your channel. Its going to be more noticed and hopefully you’ll get more subscribers who discover it. In closing, one important thing should be mentioned: what you have on YT that you wouldn’t have gotten if you were professionals backed by a major production company isn’t fans but something more valuable: you have a family in all of us who watch your content and you’re no longer to us just the Black Forest Family or content creators to us, you’re relatable people with an interesting story to follow to whom we’re close and we appreciate you and your hard work as much as you appreciate us! One last thing: love the new graphic logo to your channel and the material design is beautiful and well thought out and on that note, we look forward to more content from you Ashton and Jonathan, in the future. Stay blessed!

Hmm, my first two questions would have been 1) why did you start a channel in the first place, what is your motivation, 2) how much time do you actually devote to a single video (research, filming, editing...). Personally, I've started watching your videos for several reasons: content is comprehesive, informative, objective, you both seem very unpretensions (which is both positive and uncommon), and it offers a European perspective or insight, (I grew up in a European household in Chicago, so am a European at heart). I agree with your privacy limits, 100%. Personally, I don't care about travel videos unless it is the travel of someone personally connected to me (i.e. my daughters). Cheers.

I don't dream about being a travel blogger. I dream about simply moving to someplace like the United Kingdom or something and stay. I love Bavaria and the German language, but it is unlikely that we will ever end up leaving the United States. We just don't have the finances or the job qualifications for meeting immigration requirements. I think that America needs a huge improvement. America is not the best and those who think that it is are culturally blind. Don't worry, you just keep telling the truth. America needs the critique.

Congrats on your first year! And what was your subscriber goal? I see you are now at 21k! While you might think a travel channel would be great fun, there‘s no getting around the fact that there are more of those channels on YT than there are galaxies in the known universe! You have found a genuine USP with your research videos, and they are so well researched and prepared that they are a real delight and keep me watching. The only travel videos I personally watch even semi-regularly are ones in French - and I do that for learning the language, not for the content per se. One of the nice things for your viewers during this first year has been that as a relatively small channel, you have often responded with a heart and/or answer to many, many, many of the comments. One tech YTer I watch has over 10 million subscribers, and within 5 minutes of his posting a video, there are already well over 3k comments. Obviously not possible to respond to all them even with a heart. Well, perhaps it will be another year before you reach that point so we can continue to look forward to reading your replies fairly often. All the best for the future!

Thanks for sharing all of this with us! In my opinion you found a really nice middle-way between entertainment and education. I can clearly tell that you have experience doing research, thats one of the reasons I enjoy watching your videos so much. Also a good approach with your child, keeping his life at least semi private, I didn't know you thought about this so much but kind of expected it given what I’ve seen from you so far :D Your videos are great as they are, so no need for improvement on editing or research needed in my opinion, but of course you can always do more, but be careful it doesn’t get too much. I wish you a lot of success for the future! PS: One possible improvement I learned from a podcast I like to listen to: You could talk about the mistakes in the previous video in your next video (additionally to making an annotation in the video itself) so that your regular viewers get everything correctly.
@TypeAshton

Yes, we should get better about editing descriptions of our videos for mistakes we have made. We wish we could update the published video on KZfaq, but unfortunately it's not possible. As for speaking about the previous video's mistakes, we have talked about that as well... but it might be a bit confusing for some of our viewers who haven't watched it yet.

Congrats on one year - and Happy Mother's Day! I can understand that saying something negative about your own country or even worse, about your guest country, will raise eyebrows, and probably in some ways, it should, as long as discussion is possible, I guess, it is all good. It's probably just human nature that way. One thing though always strikes me as courious in the US, especially among those of the most patriotic kind. They typically will not allow anything negative to be discussed or even thought about the US, but somehow find it totally ok to diss the public school system and raise their kids with a belief that what the government provides is so bad, that kids need to be protected from it via homeschooling. Somehow, that is not unpatriotic thinking - just any other critiques about the US are. Is that not a tad illogical? Privacy is a big topic in Germany, and probably all countries who have experienced dictatorships. I appreciate that you are so thoughtful about Jack and what you are willing to show or not. Sounds like you have thought that through for yourself. I think, the only advice I would have from raising kids through to adulthood, is that you may want to make an artificial cut-off, like school-age or whatever seems right, where you don't show his face anymore, just silhouette or such, because kids change in spurts, not gradually. And so you cannot predict when they suddenly feel different than they felt before, and then they ask you to remove content going back in time. Not ideal. Better to cut everything off before it is too late. Jack is going to grow up a German kid, if he stays here in Germany. He will develop a more German attitudes about things. Finally, congrats to all the work you have done to learning about KZfaq and editing and such. All your work really shows. I think it is a privilege to join you and a few other families for a little while on a Sunday, while I am thinking about my own experiences jetting back and forth between our countries, just the other way around. Entertainment comes in many forms, infotainment, sharing experiences, a good laugh like 'Arbeitsunfaehigungsbescheinigung'. Great pronunciation btw. wow! It's all good, and the stunning visuals are helping a lot. Looking forward to some bike travel videos from around Germany. Sounds like a brilliant idea.

Thanks so much for the nice comment. The patriotism thing is really an interesting topic by itself. We will try and think of a way to approach this for an un-biased video. I know many Germans are intrigued by this type of mentality of many Americans. We agree completely on the cut off once Jack reaches a certain age. It will be better for him and us in the long run. Thanks so much for watching and supporting our little channel!

What a great story and video, as always. Love that you are able to keep the fine line between US and Germany in respect to politics and personal freedom. Also that you keep Jonathan out as it is his life and he should decide when he is old enough on being online or not. BTW: How is your German citizenship process coming along?
