OneMic - the minimalist recording series

OneMic - the minimalist recording series

Күн бұрын

OneMic - the minimalist recording series by John Cuniberti demonstrates that an entire band can be recorded with only one stereo microphone in one take. Each recording session is shot in HD video on a Sony a7RII by filmmaker Nathaniel Kohfield. What makes this series so different from other live performance videos is that the artist is in complete control of his/her presentation. This means that the sound, balance, dynamics and stereo image is decided upon at the moment of creation, not in post-production. The artist (band) is responsible for the final product. There is no editing of the audio or video. It’s as honest as it can be including imperfections. This organic presentation isn’t limited to “acoustic” music as seen with live classical and folk music. In this series veteran recording engineer John Cuniberti records bands with electric guitars and drums that would normally require a multi-mic, multi-track approach. This is not the first time this has been done but this technique was quickly forsaken soon after the multi-track tape recorder was invented and with it a loss of a level of musical intimacy. The OneMic series demonstrates the positive aspects of the minimalistic recording process of the 1930s but will be captured on modern stereo recording equipment.

I grew up listening to Grisman. It was my inspiration to get into the recording and filming industry. When I was 26, I had the amazing opportunity to film his grandson (Sam Grisman), and to know now that this incredible sound that resonates with my entire musical appreciative life could be established through one microphone brings tears to my eyes. At this moment I will now be selling gear to acquire an R88. This is absolutely shattering to me. What a beautiful sound.

This is a fantastic track! Thumbs up! I was checking out your channel and all the videos of different bands and started thinking about how this OneMic technique would suit classical music. This recording was a great teaser about what you could do with small ensembles in a more classical music context. Would be really interesting hearing your thoughts about recoding a large choir, since that's my own passion. Is the R88 a good companion in a church and with choirs of 40-50 singers? Your would't really have the benefit of the blumlein double 8 charateristiscs, I guess?
@onemic-theminimalist
@onemic-theminimalist 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed - one stereo mic recordings have been used for classical music since the invention of stereo recording. I suppose with a large choir one could split it into two groups and use both sides of the Blumlein double 8. Not sure what the advantage would be over a conventional stereo X/Y

Thank you John! How much difference is there in the sound of that pre compared to the TRP2? I have the TRP2 is it worth it to also have the HV-3C?@@onemic-theminimalist
@onemic-theminimalist
@onemic-theminimalist 10 ай бұрын
@@stevenrayphoto1280 I prefer the HV3C because it has stepped gain that ensures the L&R channels are perfectly balanced. If you already own the AEA, I don't suggest replacing it with the HV3C because of the "sound." All the recordings I did in my Portland sessions used the TRP.
@stevenrayphoto1280
@stevenrayphoto1280 10 ай бұрын
Thanks John. I also own some tube mic pre's, V72, Langevin 116, Ampex MX10, and UA 610. Have you ever tried the AEA ribbon mics with any tube mic pre's? I'm going to be recording a singer songwriter project with mainly nylon and steel string acoustic guitars and wonder if the tube pre's will work well with those mics in your opinion?@@onemic-theminimalist
@onemic-theminimalist
@onemic-theminimalist 10 ай бұрын
Tube gear can provide a sound, mostly harmonic distortion and I have used plenty of it over the years. The price you pay is in noise, especially when using low output ribbons. Ribbon recordings often need a bit of high end boost during mixing and thats too late to discover you picked the wrong preamp. You need to decide if the sound of a tube justifies a higher noise floor.
