For the month of May, the second month of our Silver Jubilee Year Celebration, Swami Sarvapriyananda will conduct a Memorial Day Weekend Retreat on May 29 and 30 on "Vedanta in the Twenty-first Century."
The Center was established in April 1997 as an extension of the Vedanta Society of Southern California under the leadership of Swami Swahananda and spiritual guidance of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, with headquarters at Belur Math, Howrah, West Bengal, India. The Center is located on a 2.5 acre plot surrounded by woods. A modest brick house, which came with the property, served as the main center up until June of 2000, when the first stage of construction, consisting of a worship hall and residential section, was completed . The final stage of construction, consisting of the new temple adorned with a marble image of Sri Ramakrishna, was consecrated in April 2013. The prayer hall has the seating capacity of 164. The Center’s activities include Sunday lectures, weeknight classes, worship and meditation, karma yoga sessions, and social service programms. The temple opens for morning meditation at 5 am and remains open throughout the day until the close of evening meditation at 8 pm. Daily Puja is done at 7:45 am and evening Arati is at 6:30 pm.
The Center welcomes all sincere seekers of truth who want to deepen their spiritual lives through the study of Vedanta and the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda. It is our hope that many friends and devotees will benefit from the holy atmosphere of the Center through participating in our various programs.
Our minister, the head of the Center, is Swami Sarvadevananda. Swami Swahananda was the founding minister of the Center, and was its head from 1997 to 2012. His passing has left a great void. Three monks: Swamis Atmajnanananda, Brahmarupananda, Chidbrahmanand and Brahmacharya Kumar are in residence.

I have arrived to the conclusion that the great Adi Shankaracharya in some way, solved the apparent contradictions between the religious ideas based in the existence of an all powerful God that out of its will the world and a separated individual soul is created and the concept of Not Self and Emptiness of Buddha so difficult to understand for so many people; into Advaita Vedanta. Later 1000 years later the great Swami Vivekananda at the end of the 19 Century gave a practical interpretation to the Non Dual ideas proposed by Shankaracharya totally in total accordance with the finding of Science, Logic and Mathematics, giving to the humanity a workable and practical philosophy that makes sense of all these separated ideas leading to happiness in the individual and peace in the world. We all, are fortunate that now, there are others Great followers of Shankaracharya, Ramakrishna and Vivekananda as Swami Sarvapriyananda who with a great eloquence, love and intelligence is spreading this so needed ideals through the world. God bless all of them.

When Swamiji speaks of the 1000 year philosophical “fight” between Buddhism and Vedanta, I think of the benefits we reaped with the saying, “Steel sharpens steel!”

Vedantins and Buddhists have long debated their opposing views about the existence and non-existence of the self. However mathematics shows how both their views are reconciled. “The soul has an infinite geometry, It’s a beautiful singularity, If you want to understand nothingness, Just try to solve for 1/x” This unites Buddhist and Vedantin schools. A singularity occurs in mathematics when the solution to a problem is neither zero, nor positive infinity nor negative infinity. It’s beyond language. Such a problem occurs in the function 1/x when “x” approaches zero. The solution is neither negative infinity or positive infinity nor any number in between. Such are also the opposing idea of non-self and self in Buddhism and Vedanta. They both approach the answer from different directions and hence see two sides of the same infinite existence.

The problem with Buddhism is not Buddhism it is with people who misinterpret Buddhism. The ātman in unconditioned while our corporeal human body is conditioned. What is conditioned is anātman (destitute of spirit). "Those who seek for the Tathgata should seek for the ātman. For “ ātman” and “Buddha” are synonymous" (Saptaśatikā-prajñā-pāramitā Sutra).

Weather you are a Buddhist, christian, muslem, hindu, etc. all realizations and philosophies have their basis in " I exist " and to know that you exist you have to be conscious that you exist it is this knowing that you " be " or " am " that is what makes you self. Take away consciousness and what would you know?

Most Chinese Buddhist sects look like Vedenta thought . Every sentient being (some even said non-sentient being included) originally has a precious Buddha nature , it is infinite true Self ,permanent, pure, bliss .It only needs to bring out by get rid of Ignorance. Sadly I would say they all on the wrong road like those latter India Mahayana Buddhist thought. ( Nagarjuna is an exception!) That’s one of the reasons Buddhism disappeared in India at 12-13century . Nagarjuna’s not- two (non-dual) is different from that of Vedanta’s . Nagarjuna do not thereby affirm the One , but Vedanta affirms the One ( The ultimate Reality).

Not Consciousness, the Absolute, needs nothing, how could it do so there is only Consciousness in its absolute freedom. Language, and the beautiful metaphors used by Advaita Vedanta, have their limitations and can only point to this truth, never describe it. So they should not be understood through strict logic, but more analogically: let them take us where they do and then, once they have done so, we must discard them.
