Onew had to pull himself together a bit when Sunwoojunga said she wanted to sing this song. He tried cracking a small joke about wanting to run away ('Run Away' was the song Sunwoojunga sang right before this). You could see how affected Onew was. Selene 6.23 was written by Jonghyun for SHINee. 6.23 was the night of a super moon (Selene is the Greek goddess of the moon). In the original version with all the members, Onew's the one who opens the song (Jonghyun talked about how gentle and warm his voice is). It's also Onew's favourite SHINee song. It's about a man and his foolish love of the moon, and the distance between them that could never be bridged. selene 6.23 is such a special song to shinee & shawols. it was written by jonghyun, after he was inspired by seeing the supermoon on the 23rd of june 2013, (hence the name of the song. selene being greek for moon, and 6.23 being the date.) and has a strong connection to him, which is why onew just before this, was very emotional, and struggling to get it together. and, also why it hits the audience so much. everyone knows how special the song is. it's a song about longing. about trying so hard to be close to someone, and love them, despite the distance. likening that love & distance to the moon. shinee have said this is a song for their fans, "we're separated by distance, but not by music,." (and a lot of people say more specifically, their international fans, because jonghyun said during swc III “this song is dedicated to International shawols who aren’t with shinee frequently.") this song is one of the reasons we associate jonghyun with the moon, and why it became his symbol. it's also an excellent example of his talent for beautiful lyric writing

SunwooJunga is a respected soloist in Korea. She specifically requested to sing Selene 6.23 with Onew as it is one of her fave SHINee ballad. I suggest you check out her song RUN WITH ME which she also sang on sea of Hope. She sang it before Selene 6.23 and made everyone emotional. "Selene 6.23 " is another one of the dozens of songs that was written by Jonghyun and it has now become a song that the members often sing as a tribute to him. That is why Onew became so emotional, and why you saw everyone tearing up. It's songs like this that demonstrates just how good Jonghyun was as a songwriter and why SHINee are some of the best in the industry when it comes to vocals. :D (You really need to hear a live concert version of the song with all 5 of the SHINee members singing the song.) Sunwoo Junga sings a lot of Jonghyun's lines in this performance, which makes it even more heart-wrenching if you know what the original version sounds like. Onew did tear up during this performance. Even before he started the song he had to take a minute to compose himself, but as he said, he actually sings even better when he is emotional. If you watch SHINee's SHINee World Concert 2018 - Best from Now On concert that they held only 2 months after Jonghyun's death, you will understand what I mean. Both the SHINee members and audience cried throughout the whole concert, but they still all sounded magnificent and their vocal quality wasn't even affected. And if you knew Jonghyun, you would know he had a very soft heart and would often cry in concerts, but he could always deliver his lines in a song, even while sobbing, and he still sounded flawless. That's why SHINee are on such another level, they are experts at what they do and that's why they are so highly respected by everyone. As others may have mentioned, Selene means moon in Greek and 6.23 (2013) was when we had a supermoon, which means the moon was really close to the Earth that day, making it appear extra big and bright. If you pay attention to the lyrics, you see the song has a lot of deep meaning. Jonghyun really loved the moon. He saw a lot of beauty and symbolism in the moon and often talking about the moon in interviews and conversations. Jonghyun said he wrote the song thinking about how the distance between the Moon and Earth was similar to the distance between SHINee and their fans all over the world. The alternate title of the song is "The Distance Between Us," which has now taken on even more meaning since his passing. (We know interpret the lyrics to be talking about the distance between us here on Earth and Jonghyun in Heaven.) It was even said that the moon turned a pearl aqua color -- SHINee's fan color -- the day of Jonghyun's funeral. before this performance onew began to break down and needed a moment to collect himself. They asked him if he wanted to continue and he said him being emotional is how he performs best. So everyone’s emotions are even more heightened plus they’re singing Selene.

This is the first time I’ve been able to watch this…I saw the rehearsal when Jinki had to stop from emotions and couldn’t find it in me to finish it before. She has a lovely voice…but there’s nothing like SHINee Five singing this…Jjong’s song to their international fans. He said that though we are far apart, music brings us close. We (international Shawol) are always with them…and Jonghyun is always with SHINee and Shawol. I sincerely hope you watch a live performance of this by 5HINee.
